How many grams of gold in the frame only?

    • +3

      That is the $5303 question.

The lenses aren't made of gold, so you're math is out. Also 18k gold is 75% pure, so you're further out.

    • -5

I'm not out at all. That is the price for 18k, and every point is qualified with a "should" or "if" and I specifically said with lens.

So this is a comprehension issue.

AI says Melt Value is between ~$2,670 – $3,560 AUD

To calculate the value of the pure gold content in the Ray-Ban Aviator Solid Gold (RB3025K), we need to look at the gold's purity, the estimated weight, and the current market rate as of January 23, 2026.

      1. Pure Gold Content Calculation

The frame is made of 18K gold, which is 75% pure gold by weight.
Total Frame Weight: Approximately 15 to 20 grams.
Pure (24K) Gold Weight: 11.25 to 15 grams.

      2. Current Market Price (January 2026)

Gold has seen a significant rally recently. As of today, the spot price for pure 24K gold in Australia is approximately:AUD $237.38 per gram (Sell price for bullion/pool gold).
      AUD $7,240.79 per ounce.

      3. The Final Value

Based on these current rates, the value of the raw gold alone (melt value) in a pair of Solid Gold Aviators is:
      Metric - Low Estimate (11.25g) - $2,670 - High Estimate (15g) - $3,560

      Summary of Value
Melt Value: ~$2,670 – $3,560 AUD. This is what the gold is worth if you were to melt it down today.
      Retail/Resale Value: ~$5,300 – $6,500 AUD.

The glasses sell for much more than the gold price because they are a limited edition (only 1,200 pairs made) and include the craftsmanship, lenses, and brand "Ray-Ban" markup.

      • Total Frame Weight: Approximately 15 to 20 grams.

How can the frame weight be less than the weight of stainless steal versions?

        • you're probably looking at the total weight of the stainless steal version including lenses.

  • +3

OP fails to mention normal price in title or body, so how do we know this is a bargain?

    • -2

I mention the price of gold v the cost of the item

      • +1

With no evidence that the gold in the item is worth more than the price of the item. Where's the bargain?

        • Gold weighs 2.5x the weight of stainless steel

These were priced prior to the gold rush, so the math should stack up.

          • +1

@happydude: It does seem like there is a very good chance you could get a good deal for some gold, based on your back of the napkin maths

  • -7

Ridiculous. Stop posting garbage and stop voting for it.

    • +1

You'd throw $5000 sunnies in the garbage?

    • +1

shaaadaaap, I'm here for the comments!

  • Time to sell my Rams for these

  • +1

solid gold and limited made. not to shabby

  • +1

oh good, i left my last pair on the train

  • -2

More money than sense if you buy this. Ozbargainers usually have sense, that why they look for deals.

  • +1

Anyway of finding out how heavy the frame is? Gold is heavier than most other metals so likely could be heavier than the standard frame. With gold fast increasing in price it's not out of the realm of possibility that the scrap price could exceed the listed price, especially if they have not updated in a while.

There are a lot of people scoring below cost sterling silver jewellery and numismatic products at the moment using the same principle.

    • Somebody gets the deal!

I tried, couldn't find anything on the weight but gold weighs 2.5x the weight of stainless steel. The RB3025 typically weigh around 32 to 33 grams (with lenses).

So fair chance there is profit here.

      • Also could stack GST refund if doing overseas trip

      • 14 day return policy as well

      • -3

gold weighs 2.5x the weight of stainless steel

Which would be relevant if they were pure gold, but they are 18k. Which is more like 2x the weight of stainless.

  • 33 upvotes - how many actually purchased them?

    • We need deals like this to balance the universe. 99% of deals these days get nowhere near the up votes they should based on the clicks and positive comments the deals get.

  • I love gooooooooooooooooooold!

The look of it! The smell of it! The taste of it! The texture! I love gold so much that I lost my genitalia in an unfortunate smelting accident. Hence the name… Goldmember.

    • the faaaather. he is the fajeeer

  • plastic lenses on a gold frame, yuck!

  • Thanks OP, can't afford 1

  • I have never traded physical gold before, how does it normally work?
I assume you need to remove anything that's not gold, and they weigh it and give you a price?

    • They just pay you for the gold contents - minus whatever fees they take.

  • I'm just going to buy this

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/945292

    • Woooooooooosh

  • any discount code

  • -1

According to the LLMs I asked no profit is likely.

the scrap gold content of the glasses is plausibly in the ~2,400–4,000 AUD range on a spot basis, before any refining or dealer fees.

    • LLM data is not up to date and gold prices have been increasing.

OP posted the current gold price to be ~5k

before any refining or dealer fees.

No idea how much this is though.

      • +2

I closed the chat but the LLM was estimating there to be somewhere between 15 and 25 grams of gold content. Which is less than 1 troy oz. So the estimate seemed reasonable.
There would need to be at least approx. 1 troy ounce of 18k equivalent gold content to break even at current prices.

  • Would this save my marriage?

  • +2

Sold out. Maybe Macron got the last one

    • More stock available…I was just able to checkout

  • +1

Based on your gold calculations there you should change the title to Ray-Ban Aviator Sunglasses FREE with purchase of $5,303 in gold

  • I am confident you will never make a dollar trying to recycle gold from a luxottica product.

  • +1

I checked, the lenses are not really solid gold.

    • the lenses are not really solid gold

That much was transparent for most of us.

    • Is it you? Good luck!
