Help Me with Choosing a Display Port to VGA/HDMI Adapter

Hi All,

I got a PC with 3 Display Ports (on the original motherboard), 1 monitor with VGA output and 1 monitor with HDMI output.

I am hoping to connect the 2 monitors to the PC. Hence, I believe that I will need 2 adapters to connect them.

I am looking for adapters at Aliexpress and forums and based on my reading, I have to make sure that I got the correct adapters (active?) or they may not work.

From my reading, it looks like some adapters are not active or one way only hence it may not work.

To make sure I got the correct one, can anyone recommend adapters from VGA/HDMI to Display Port (or the other way around) or point out which one should get (i.e. VGA/HDMI to Display Port or Display Port to VGA/HDMI?).

I have the HDMI and VGA cables already but if you think it's better to buy the HDMI/VGA cables to Display Port instead, please let me know.

As mentioned above, my PC only got 3 display ports and my monitors got a VGA output and a HDMI output.

Thank you.

UGREEN active DP to HDMI cable of your choice on Amazon. It'll just work. End.

What make and model is the PC or motherboard?

I've never seen a motherboard with three DP ports on it but no HDMI port. Except for some business computers, which have DP++ ports on them that don't require an active DP to HDMI cable, because the motherboard automatically detects the presence of a HDMI device on the other end of the cable and sends it a HDMI signal. So for them all you need is a passive DP to HDMI cable, which is a lot cheaper than an active one.

So the alternative question, if you don't know what motherboard is in it, do the DP ports have a DP++ symbol next to them. It is a D inside a P with two + symbols next to it.

Active DP to HDMI cables have electronics in them that convert the DP signal out of the DP port into a HDMI signal. Passive DP to HDMI cables do not do any active conversion, they just have a DP connector at one end wired to a HDMI connector at the other.

It is hard ro believe someone is still using an antiquated VGA monitor these days.

    • Thank you for the response. The PC is HP EliteDesk 800 G3 TWR. The motherboard is SP# 912335-001 AS# 901014-001. The 2 DP ports got DP++ symbol. The other one got a black around it and no symbol. Do you know what adapter I should get?

OK, your HP EliteDesk 800 G3 tower has two DP++ ports. Either an active or a passive DP to HDMI cable will work in those with your HDMI monitor. A passive cable should be cheaper because it has no electronics in it, and more reliable because there's nothing in it to fail. If you get an active cable do like Hybroid says (above) and get one from a reputable company like UGREEN, because the cheap no-name ones can be unreliable junk.

I've used passive DP++ to HDMI cables and they've always worked without any problems on HP computers.

It sounds like the flexiport on your PC is configured for DP too. It is possible to change the flex io board card to a VGA one, and they are available for your PC model on places like ebay for $30, but I don't know how hard the swap is. You need to decide whether you are skilled/brave/crazy enough to try it.

So unless you want to try that for your VGA monitor, or replace your antiquated VGA monitor, you are going to have to do like bargaino says (below) and get an active DP to VGA adapter and plug it into the other DP++ port.

Me, I'd just chuck the old VGA monitor. There are some really cheap monitors available that at least have HDMI, and often have DP too.

The picture quality on buying a used monitor with dp/hdmi would be worth it. I can't imagine how old/bad a monitor that only has VGA on it is.

I have to make sure that I got the correct adapters (active?) or they may not work.

Probably wrong, unless you want 4K.
Any DP to VGA must be active, as DP does not carry analog signals.
For DP to HDMI, assuming your mobo supports that, a passive cable will give you hdmi 1.4, which is good for up to QHD 60Hz.

Try a simple dumb cable adapter first. Your old monitor most likely will be fine

But you have not given much detail.
