    Price in title.

Also as is becoming all too common, is this a genuine deal or just an announcement?

Perhaps OB ought to include a product announcement category or tag or similar?

    • +1

Also as is becoming all too common, is this a genuine deal or just an announcement?

It probably is an announcement if it's considered permanent from hereon, but if we take it that this was previously just the 200GB storage per month without AI, and the AI part is now included without any extra cost, it seems like a deal? Especially if we used to think that the 200GB storage per month alone was worth paying for

      • 200GB is $45 a year. This is the regular 2TB plan/cost with AI added.

      • +2

Just the first step in enshitification journey.
Get us used to it and then slowly cut quality and increase monetization once enough of us are using and used to having it.

        • or maybe it just ends up on here https://killedbygoogle.com

        • Sure, I understand the suspicion.

I am just saying, assuming you considered 200GB at the previous price a deal, then objectivetly, it does not make any sense at this stage to say this is less of a deal.

As for "first step in enshitification journey", that is what might come next

          • @illumination:

I am just saying, assuming you considered 200GB at the previous price a deal

Unless you got offered the time limited discount for the 200GB plan then the regular price was not a deal?

  • +17

No way! Google will be using your private personal files to train its AI We already said goodbye to privacy, but this is the final nail in the coffin. IStn't Siri partnering with Hey Gemeni

    • +6

So you are not using Gmail, Chrome, Google Maps, Youtube Music, Google Drive etc already?

      • +1

        Nope

      • +1

While it's extremely rare… Like very extremely rare… Some of us have gone to great lengths to degoogle. It IS possible. Part of the problem, jumping from the hotplate into the fire (using another of the privacy abusers).

    • Absolutely using your personal files. I did a google ux/ui design course a while ago but recently asked Google Antigravity to do some low-fi website mock ups… it was obviously trained on student submissions from the course i.e. it did picture perfect pencil drawn wireframes with authentic smudges, just like we had to submit for the course

  • +3

included in 2TB family plan? Paying $149 PA atm

    • Yes it is

  • +37

This is just an advertisement, where is the deal?

  • +12

Primed for getting reamed later with price hikes. No chance they'll continue giving 1.8TB extra for $2.50 pm

    • 200GB Standard: $4.49 pnm
    • 200GB with AI: $12.49 pm
    • 2TB with AI: $14.99 pm
    • 200GB with AI is currently 50% off for 2 months (at least it is offered to me)

      • +1

Yeah me too. I'm comparing the normal plan prices for the purpose of my comment.

        • I'm on the yearly stingy $29 plan. Not sure what would happen if I would elect to those 2 discounted months..

    • 200GB with AI could be deliberately priced high-ish to make the 2GB with AI option look more attractive, as opposed to the 2GB with AI being "cheap".

      We're just speculating here though

      • Possibly. That's how fast food does it. If that's the case they'd be banking on almost all subscribers only choosing it for the small price difference and not actually consuming their storage allowance.

  • +1

    ~$70/year from Turkey

    • +1

What's the best way to do that without getting into the naughty corner with google?

      • +34

        Relocate and Turkish citizenship?

        • Relocating is enough

Migrants in Australia without citizenship have to pay Aussie prices because they chose an expensive country too

          • -2

@illumination: They get plenty of free Aussie cash/taxpayer funded goods.

          • @illumination: I am Turkish and Australian citizen. I was paying for YT Premium by using Turkish bank account with Turkish home address etc. YT cancelled my subscription due to not using it in Turkiye. So being a citizen not enough anymore unfortunately.

        • Not what our government would want though. They need to tax more people not less!

    • -6

      This is the way

      • Man I hate Reddit

        • +3

          You dropped this king 👑

        • -1

I also choose this guy's comment

        • -2

          Ozbargainer here, I agree.

    • Google FREQUENTLY uses its ban hammer. Definitely not worth risking it due to the storage part. You'll just get locked out of your files/account.

      • -1

Google FREQUENTLY uses its ban hammer

        Source?

        • +1

I mean there aren't statistics, but I see it come up often in my travels, reddit, hn, etc (more often than I see complaints against other services).

There are articles about it too: https://www.androidauthority.com/google-account-banned-10546…

It'd be trivial for Google to boot people crossing regions, so as soon as enough people do it that Google feels they're losing too much money from our, they'll crack down.

          • -2

@incipient: So do you have an actual source where signing up through another country FREQUENTLY gets your account banned?

            • +1

@devize: Feel free to debate the semantic. No biggie for me whoever gets accounts locked.

              • @incipient: I have a Google pixel. Have been having 4 of them do far.
I had to send them back 3 times in my lifetime for hardware faults that were systemic - while batches having problems.

Their support is basically offshore employees that are functionally illiterate and computer illiterate.

At any point when I tried to escalate and said charge back is also an option if they are not gonna simply ignore the law (example: receive a faulty until but drag their feet for months in sending a replacement or repairing it) they would immediately pull out that Google will ban and cancel all your accounts and any account remotely associated with you if you do any charge back even for legitimate reasons and no matter how small.

So yeah your email, accounts, data and everything else is a hostage. They have the right to do it - all your stuff is legally their property. I'm just saying it's an important thing to be aware of. I'm assuming fraud that costs them lost revenue wouldnt have any problem being treated the same as charge back when they broke the law.

    • It was much cheaper and only recently went to $70. Glad I didnt cancel. Been using it for the 2TB storage. hopefully no ban hammer

  • +32

Tech companies are overinvested in AI dream.

People are inundated with unwanted features and subscription models that offer little real-world value.

    Spam is becoming more expensive.

    • +16

but you can make a funny picture

      • +5

If you think funny picture is the extent of it, your living under a rock and I feel bad for you

        • +2

You can make all kinds of slop remixing all kinds of data.

        • +3

I can also make a naughty picture 😏

        • +6

Yeah, think of all the overwritten, low content emails you now get from your dumbest co-workers.

    • +1

Luckily for you, you can choose to not use it!!!

      • +3

If only that were true. This is worse than when Microsoft wanted everyone to use Edge

      • +1

yeah, but that dedicated Copilot button on every laptop is annoying.

    • +7

I use Gemini more than google search now. It's bloody great.

Once you get in the habit of using it, it's hard to go back to the old fashioned way of searching google to try and find the answer to your question.

      • +2

Every now and then you just accept you get rubbish.

I had this the other week: https://imgur.com/a/PdlbgVG

My partner asked Google about the 'magic sponge' and was told it released microplastics into the air. Turns out it got confused with the magic eraser not magic sponge.

        • I find those "AI" results at the top of search engines that you have screenshot, google, Bing etc are vastly shitter than using the AI app directly, I can only assume due to the sheer volume of google searches and the time frame we've come to expect google results to generate (near instantaneous) the AI they use is a super basic version.

Using the Gemini app directly, where it takes 3-6 seconds to "think" before every answer seems to give much better results.

        • +1

Is a magic sponge and magic eraser different? From my quick google (actual results not AI summary), they're the same thing and do release microplastics?

    • +3

There were 10 approval for data centre in NSW, ~28–30 are pending ( in Mel ). Once they all approve, the electricity cost will fly free, and the little consumers will be blame for the said cost

      • -7

I'm honestly surprised anyone is building data centres of any scale in Australia with how rooted our electricity prices are due to "net zero"… Maybe they only plan on running them from 11am till 2pm to take advantage of the subsidised "FREE POWER!!"

        • +1

Idk maybe so that they can sign some lucrative "local" contract with the future government? Or coz tax munies is limitless, brrr brrr brrr, well it's 0001011001 now

    • I use Gemini all the time. Its well worth the price especially with the 2tb storage tier.

    • +3

We have a situation at work where one employee is writting long winded bullshit email using Microslop copilot. Then the line manager has to use copoliot the translate the verbose bullshit in english.

According to Microslop this is a win. Who asked for this crap.

    • -3

Been a member for 14 years. Still doesn't know what a valid negative vote is.

      • -5

Funny that the price got added after my vote

        • What's funny about that? Someone else who know what they're doing reported the deal for it to be fixed. What you should have done.

      • +1

While Paintoad has the poise of a sledgehammer, they're 100% correct and anyone downvoting needs to read the rules to understand what negs are actually for.

  • -7

    price?

  • Thanks OP. Was paying for this plan and didn’t know of the AI inclusions. Good to know the value increased somewhat with Veo as well.

  • +5

Doea Google really need free advertising?!

    • +1

It's for our benefit not Google's!

  • +6

Negative consequences of AI to society far outweigh any benefits. Remember your money, your vote.

    • +3

Correct, stop using Google, Microsoft etc.

      • No, use the services but don't pay. They already make a bank with ads.

        • Using the services is paying them

          • @onlinepred: Not from my pocket. 3rd party advertiser is paying them.

I personally don't want to pay a cent to these companies.

            • @Bargainian: Without you, get wouldn’t earn a cent

              • @onlinepred: I'm not sure about that. I don't pay for their services, but it costs these companies to provide the services to me. Those servers in the cloud are not really cheap to build and run.

Someone pays for it. It's either the paying subscribers or there 3rd party advertisers. I don't buy from their advertisers either. Why do you think I'm on Ozb?

They don't get anything from me.

    • -5

Even if you are correct on that, which is very much debatable, I'd rather a western company be in control of the best version of it rather than a Chinese company.

      • +6

If it was Trump Media & Technology Group?

        • +7

          They said Western, not Russian.

        • -8

Absolutely and you'd have to have full blown TDS to pick xi Jinping over trump. Go and touch grass and don't get sucked into the media hype.

          • -4

@Binchicken22: The fact this is getting downvoted, for saying you'd pick trump over Xi Jinping is absolutely wild lol.

            Leftys are so damn delusional.

            • +2

@Binchicken22: Funny how some folks blame ‘the left’ so reflexively that it ends up revealing more about their worldview than about the topic they’re arguing. Have some modicum of intelligence. You're considered more delusional to think Trump is any better.

            • +2

              @Binchicken22:

              Leftys are so damn delusional.

What, you think "Leftys" are the only people who have realised Trump is a moron ?!

Pro tip : Trump is considered an idiot by people from all parts of the political spectrum.

              • -3

@Nom: He definitely has his detractors on the establishment right too you are correct, but only a lefty would be retarded enough to say they'd rather Xi Jinping over trump.

          • +2

            @Binchicken22:

            full blown TDS

Go and touch grass and don't get sucked into the media hype.

I can't guess which news channel you.watch& which red-political party you support.

Why do all these Free Thinking Individuals all sound the same?

            • -1

@M00Cow: How is quoting a medical condition making me less "free thinking", because I use the name for an established medical condition?

          • @Binchicken22: How about don't pick either.

            • @Bargainian: Well yeah, that's a reasonable position to take. I have no issues with that.

    • For example?

  • welp, if i cant get RAM at a decent price and already have a sub for this, i m well start using it.

  • +25

They should just integrate YouTube premium and music with this like Apple One.

    • At what cost?

      • +5

        About 3 Turkish lira

  • Can I get a token and use this with an DE?

  • PLEASE use AI so we can then suddenly charge you again for it like microsoft did, ITS NOT BECAUSE WE INVESTED TOO MUCH
