Link is for the Switch 1 version, which is also backwards compatible on its own, but the real deal is getting both versions for under 30 when the Switch 2 native version alone is on sale for 44.97 at the moment.

You have to play the first hour or so of the game (a lot less if you skip the clips) to unlock the IN GAME upgrade purchase option. Good news is, that's 14.95 normal price, meaning you can buy the game now, and not worry about having to race through the tutorial and buy the upgrade before a sale ends or anything.

Once you buy that upgrade, you will own both versions of the game digitally. So if you hand me down'd your Switch 1 to a kiddo or sibling, they can play the last gen version too, which is always fun.

  Just buy a switch 1 version from EB, purchase the switch 2 version when you put in the cartridge and return the switch 1 version within 7 days.

      The number of times this gets raised whenever a HL Deal is posted - I think we should buy an Ozbargain copy and pass it from person to person with a $5 charge to repay the game :') Or someone should bring a bunch to the next meetup lol.

      I borrowed one from a friend of a friend and gave it back - works great. As stated in description, you need to play the original game (but I think it was like 5-10 mins and not an hour) and then go back and find the in-game option to upgrade.
      Try your local library or ask your extended friend network. I think it's a little immoral to abuse EB's games return system as suggested. It's not the intended purpose of the policy.

          @cook99: Just HL due to the weird way that they’ve implemented the upgrade from Switch 1. Usually cartridge games are cartridge games and will always require the original cartridge to run.
          For some reason, for this game only (afaik) you can go into the game menu once you’ve opened the switch 1 game on the switch 2, and enter a web portal to buy the digital switch 2 version of the game at a special discounted price for owning the switch 1 version. You end up with a fully fledged digital version of the switch 2 game which doesn’t require the switch 1 cartridge to be inserted to run.

            @ts13: There’s a similar work around for Skyrim as well, which requires you to have a copy of Skyrim and the anniversary upgrade.

            Been awhile since I did it, so I can’t remember the exact details, but you also end up with a digital copy of the Switch 2 version without needing to keep the game card in.

    I'm out of the loop with the Switch 2. What does this do? Does it bind the Switch 2 version to your Switch 2 permanently?

      No. Not to that specific device. Think of the switch 1 game unlocking a coupon code to buy the digital switch 2 game in your Nintendo account for a significant discount. Then you just have a digital licence for the switch 2 game (which I understand should also be backwards compatible).

      Most games tend to have a patch for the switch 1 version which you get for free or pay anywhere up to $30 to enable Switch 2 updates. These patches require you to keep a physical Switch 1 game in the system or you can’t play the game. The game you play is an updated/patched version of the Switch 1 release basically.

      For whatever reason, Harry Potter takes a different approach. The Switch 2 update isn’t a patch of a Switch 1 copy, but an entirely new release of the game. They offer you a discount if you own the original game, which then gets you a standalone copy for Switch 2. Since you have a standalone copy, you can sell the Switch 1 release as it’s not needed.

      A few other games have offered a Switch 2 version which wasn a patch of the Switch 1. Most don’t give previous owners a steep discount however.
