…so it was on Free to Air, and now we can stream it on catch up?

    • +1

      That's generally how it goes.

However, I still just DVR shows from Free-to-Air. Most good DVR software has automatic commercial skipping, and the quality of broadcast HD stations is superior to catch-up TV, which uses very heavy video compression.

The ads should add another hour to the movie length

    You lost me at

    with Ads

    • +8

I mean, it's been free to stream, without ads, for a long time now. (And 4k HDR BrRip DOLBY Multilanguage)

      • +3

Back in the day it was Axxo subs

      • +2

        MKV?

      • -1

        DV?

  • +2

This was a really good movie esp if you got kids

    • -5

Yeah, there are multiple ways it could have been more special or more accurate etc., but can we appreciate how unlikely it was to be this good judging by historical and contemporary evidence?

      • +2

        its a (profanity) mario movie.

      • more accurate

What did you want, a playthrough of Super Mario Bros.?

        • -1

Not personally, I’m saying some people’s complaints aren’t technically inaccurate but it’s actually really good, which is exceedingly rare in game adaptations, and we should appreciate that more.

Edit: Probably my meaning wasn’t obvious because people haven’t been complaining in this thread, but there was a lot of it around the time of release. “Accuracy” complaints were largely around Mario’s voice and Peach’s character iirc. There were petitions against Chris Pratt for example. I’m used to arguing against the negativity.

    • Thankfully it was included in the title!

    • -4

      Just work/multitask during the ads.

      Is not free

      That's not how it works

  • -5

This is rubbish. I'd much rather watch the 1993 version.

    • +4

Really? What didnt you like about it?

Personally I went in expecting trash, but got funny pop culture references (including to the 1993 version) and a good chunk of subversion of expectation humor.

Admittedly the Donkey Kong part was pretty forced…. I was ready for the pointless fight to be over - but its a family film I suppose. It was no worse than finding a demigod by chance or a girl having ice powers (just as 2 other successful examples). They just had to force mariokart in there somehow apparently.

Luigi 'came of age' pretty well, DK matured and learned some humility, and even the end with the cage made canon sense, in world.

Other than the kongs and the karts I didnt find much to gripe about.

What rubbed you wrong about it?

    • Came here for this!

      • Im waiting to learn what rubbed him wrong about it.

See above, but other than 'the kongs' part I didnt find anything objectionable for a 'whole family' movie.

        • +1

Have you seen the 1993 adaptation? When comparing the two, I totally understand MrZ's comment ;)

          • +1

@rompastompa: No one can take a joke around here

          • @rompastompa: 100% I grew up on it. That and the TMNT movie raised a generation.
I'd call them a 'meme movie' in todays lingo too, though.

Though I must admit I prefered the 'Super Mario Brothers Super Show'.

    • I know the 1993 comparisons are jokes, but it might be interesting to compare to the 1986 adaptation.

The peaches song is the best. Apparently jack black made it in 2 days. I don't understand all the surprises about ads. Kayo, Netflix and prime video have ads now too. It's just kind of normal. Thanks for letting us know!

    • Wait do they? Is Brave just blocking them?

I had a message from Prime ads were coming but they never did - I didnt consider they were just filtered, heh.

      • Prime ads are definitely there and getting worse. Normally every time there is a software update the ads get more frequent.

        • OK cool, go Brave. I've never seen even a single ad - I just assumed they didn't proceed due to backlash or some such.
          TIL.

Disney+ has ads in sport. Enshitification is everywhere

    Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches
    Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches
    I love you, oh~

    • +1

Mario, Luigi, and a Donkey Kong too
A thousand troops of Koopas couldn't keep me from you
Princess Peach, at the end of the line
      I'll make you mine, oh!

lol free to air TV is now considered a bargain. I better post that 7News is free to watch tonight

    • Maybe not 7news but yeah.. if both options have ads (streaming or not) and one has a subscription if the quality and range of the content is decreasing for streaming services (notably has) and free to air stuff is improving (I find this is true) I'd go for the latter. Netflix is so b /c. grade content these days and a lot of the other streaming services are just holding access to old VHS and DVD classics.

Ads on streaming services has really backfired for them, might just be me but I'm just used to ads now anyway. Even Tubi and YouTube movies doesn't seem that bad now. 😂

    • V for Vendetta is on ABC tonight, could use the TV guide but instead we can post it as a bargain.

  • +5

a 2 year old movie is now streaming with ads. thank you mate

  • +3

The standards for what's considered a bargain these days are certainly dismal….

    • -1

Can't wait for someone to post about free oxygen

    • -1

Feel free to post a bargain yourself…

    • If someone is posting up about a movie being on streaming it's kind of fair that it's posted up about movies being on free to air, especially if both have ads anyway. I think it's a good shout.

This film is the perfect way to spend an hour and a half if your idea of what makes art good is pointing at a screen and saying "I know that thing!! I know that thing!!" over and over again.

EDIT: Preemptive disclaimer that "it's for kids" is a bad argument. It implies that kids deserve slop that shuts them up for a while instead of films that might actually make them think a little while also being fun and silly. There are plenty of kids movies that are worth watching before subjecting them to this jangling keys show.

    • It depends if you actually analyze, or are only half-watching enough to spot the 'I know that thing' references.

      • 2 brothers struggling to make a business work out, lovingly support each other even with a (mostly) unsupportive family.
      • They decide to do an altruistic action (good mesage for kids) and save the city - Hoping for recognition, sure, but not demanding it.
      • Mario does everything thing he can to get back to Luigi once separated - good brotherly love message.
      • Peach shows basic kindness to a stranger, while still being reserved - which is a good lesson - care but dont overcommit to strangers.
      • Peach helps significantly once Mario has proven he's willing to work hard to help himself\others - great message - Can't help someone whos not willing to help themselves.
      • You learn about her past - Peach shows a family is what you choose, not just who gave birth to you.

Then the kongs happen… and I suppose the things you learn from DK are that how you look isn't as important as how you behave…. but also dont judge a book by its cover, as the 'dumb pretty boy' ends up having a heart of gold… but it's weak messaging at best, I've said above, it's the bit of the movie that IMO, was indeed 'LOOK! DK AND MARIOKART! OOO' Anyway…

      • A leader is willing to sacrifice it all for her kingdoms happyness - Great message for what we SHOULD look for in a politician.
      • Mario, the father, and Luigi himself learn that he's NOT a weak useless 2nd player, and self confidience is important.
      • Bowsers love ends up unrequited, because it was unhelthy and obsessive.

blah blah blah etc etc etc.

There are a lot more things messaged in the movie, it's far from 'shut up slop' - There's tons you can deep dive with them about this movie.

If you're watching it with your kids, its not hard to pause every 2~5 minutes and talk about: 'Now why didn't she just help straight away?', 'Why would they risk their safety to stop some water?', or 'Why do you think the dad is so against them following their dream?' etc.

As far as films that are still generationally relevant go, it seemed really well messaged throughout, IMO.

  • The endless gambling ads are driving my kids nuts
