When yesterday's AliExpress sale started I was eagerly waiting for the Bundle Deals discounts to go live and today they finally did. First is the coupon code AUD01 that takes US$3 off US$18+ and the second discount is the increased bulk discounts. By buying more you now get:

  • US$3.30 off 6+ items
  • US$4.60 off 10+ items
  • US$6.60 off 18+ items

Bundle deals is a great way to pick up phone cables and other goodies quite cheap. Please be aware that the tax calculation is often more out of whack here so it's important to compare prices between bundle deals and non-bundle deals.

If you use the AliExpress app you can search for products easily on the bundles deal page. If you use the desktop site there's "Copy the item link" at the bottom of the each product page so you can easily check if it's eligible for cashback.

  • Great deal as always @Clear

Please be aware that the tax calculation is often more out of whack here so it's important to compare prices between bundle deals and non-bundle deals.

FWIW this is rather odd that Aliexpress follows this policy where they will collect significantly above 10% GST on bundle deal purchases.

I note that they state this in their 'info' on GST/Tax payments:

If the AliExpress platform offers a discount, GST is still calculated on the seller's listed price. The discount the platform offers is viewed as a part payment, made by the platform towards the cost of the goods for you.

Does anyone know if there's any Australian legal basis for this? As my understanding has always been that GST is ONLY payable on the end price the consumer pays, NOT some listed price that you get a discount from the seller on - this seems like utter crap and without any ATO basis to do so whatsoever. Anyone else see this differently or have info on it?

PS. This gripe is NOT to detract from Clear's deal nor the bundle deals being still very good value (I just bought from today myself - but the GST charged was nearly double what I would have expected, was around a 18% surcharge of the end price!).

I managed to get in contact with their legal department and had this exact argument with them. They had a completely different interpretation to the law and that was that. Nothing I more I could do. Seems they've added that message in recently.

Fair enough - I don't think any individual is expected to resolve this and certainly not you.

The crazy thing is it is not up to them or their legal dept to interpret the ATO's requirements, it's to follow what the ATO indicate is required - no more, no less. And GST is only payable on what the customer ends up paying. e.g when you get a $2000 TV from JB on sale for $1000, you do not pay the GST on the pre-discounted price.

I think Aliexpress knows exactly what they are doing and it's either being scooped off as pure profit to them - or taken to subsidise their pricing on the bundle deals - but they're not paying 100% of what they take as GST to the ATO - I am calling bullshit on them for this as no company as large as them pays a cent more tax than is required.

Pretty shoddy of them as would be a very significant sum overall.

        • Aliexpress is shoddy for their GST component. Last time I downloaded invoice from them, it doesnt even have ABN listed.
Not sure how they would report and pay the GST back to ATO.

Not surprised anyway, some of the items would reflect higher price if you pay with coins. Weird but at times it still ends up slightly cheaper but not by much.

What I like about the bundle deal is free shipping for 3 items, even for total spending less than US$10. I managed to order 3 items for like $7-8 and they were shipped free… Better than buying similar choice items that would need minimum spending of $10.

    • That message is semi correct in that it's based on the sellers price but not what they list it for, but what they get paid. (I read this a little while ago so hopefully my memory of it is correct)

For marketplace sales, the Aus tax law says the GST should be charged on whatever amount the seller receives not taking in to account any discount provided by the marketplace itself (AliExpress in this case). If the item is $100 and the seller got paid $100 but Aliexpress footed a discount of 50% the GST would be $10 still. However if the seller wears 25% and AliEx wears 25% then the GST should be $7.50.

They aren't transparent about who's discounting and who's getting paid what but you can probably bet the GST they charge isn't based on the final amount the seller is getting. Unfortunately we have no way to tell. A lot of times the GST doesn't add up before you even take in to account any discount codes, coins, anything else applied at the cart.

    oooo… thanks for this.

Does the upsized cashback on TCB also apply for this?

Mine tracked at the 13% within 20mins or so for bundle buys. Now not sure if it will be paid but it appears it could be possible, so consider it a bonus.

      • +1

No reason it wouldn't be paid unless you're looking to cancel your order.

    You had me at 18+.

  • what do people usually buy from aliexpress? I need to rack up some items

    • It's good for phone cables

    • just think of it as a bigger $2 Asian discount store, which are present in most shopping centres.

scroll through the bundle deals page. it's built with social media design principles (e.g. infinite scroll, catchy images and videos, totally designed to hook you). without much scrolling you'll come across things and think, damn, that looks interesting, vow less than 2 bucks, add to cart. and before you know it, you'll have added $50 worth of items easy

    • I got 16 oralb compatible heads for $5.2xx, auto foam soap dispensers, hair accessories, foot massage pad for $4.2x

Don't forget to pay in USD to mitigate costs. On an $30 AUD cart which included $5.5 tax (crazy) , I changed TO USD and ended up paying $27.8 AUD ($19.37 USD) on card like UP with no international transaction fees.

  • TCB UK highest cashback at 20% and uncapped

  • I had a cart of Bundle deals that came to $30.10 that has miraculously jumped in value to $46.90. Each item shot up by 30-40%%. By sheer coincidence it occurred as I saw your post and this code go live….

I've noticed this fkery on at least 2 other occasions now.

Bundle deals products jump up and down. I find that if you close and come back later it will go down. Often you can keep browsing and find the same listing several times with different pricing.

    • Yeah hit and miss. It works both ways, could be cheaper the next day. If its not urgent just monitor the prices, it will drop again eventually.

    Price in Aud Please

    • AliExpress trade in USD and setting overseas websites to AUD or letting PayPal do the currency conversion results may result in an inflated rate. To get the correct rate you need a card without international fees and do the following:

      • Set the website currency to USD
      • Checkout with PayPal
      • Select your card with no international fees
      • Click "See currency options"
      • Select USD to bill the card in USD instead of AUD
      • Proceed with checkout

Now you'll get the correct MasterCard or VISA exchange rate.
