12 months registration
Compulsory third party (CTP) insurance
Stamp duty
Dealer delivery charges

[NSW, ACT, NT, QLD, TAS, WA, VIC, SA] $54,990 drive away

Both Sealion 7 variants have a 82.56 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) BYD blade battery pack, which can be charged at speeds up to 150 kW when DC charging. They also have an on-board 11 kW AC charger for three-phase charging (old models were 7kW)

Why is it $3750 more in VIC than NSW?

    • +7

      Stamp Duty etc

      • +3

That isn't going to account for that much of a difference. i.e. a 2% higher stamp duty would only result in a $1000 price difference.

    • That was without the discount price. Thanks for the flag, updated.

      Thanks.

VIC governments broke from imprisonment of an entire state for a year, it’s not cheap

      • +14

Plus all the new hospitals, removal of level crossings, new stations and a whole lot more that has been neglected for decades.

The Liberals are known for selling assets, doing nothing productive and killing things off. Plus right now, the Liberals are focused on suing and bankrupting each other while senior people (like Sam Groth) resign from the party.

Of course the government will be in debt to set the state up for future success.

        • -2

@arcticmonkey, so the ALP are to blame after all. They've governed for 21/25 years this century in Vic.

    • +3

You think all the government handouts/bribes enjoyed in Victoria somehow dont come from tax payers in the first place?

      • -7

Correct. Plus, every tax payer dollar handed to someone for 'free' is another wedge dividing the rich from the poor. Said money just gets spent and goes straight back to the rich who will inevitably invest it into assets.

The wealthy Victorian progressives think their virtue is saving the poor, in reality they're making themselves richer without even knowing it. Interesting.

    • -4

Victorians love their socialism, and love their taxes even more!!

    • -6

when they drop price it usually means they can't sell them lol I saw recently BYD sales have droped, seems to be a bad year for byd.

      • +15

Yes and no, it means that there's competition so they have to drop their price to sell the number of units that they want to sell. This has been happening across the board with almost all the cars, especially EV cars. For brands like Toyota, they haven't hiked their prices in a long time due to Chinese competitors keeping them honest. This is a really good thing for Australians. We're sick of being taken for a ride, getting ripped off after COVID before the flood of Chinese cars came in to save us.

        • -4

I am talking about last 2 years not way back in covid days. Those were the best days because when I sold my old petrol car I actually made a profit lol for a 5 years old car.

      • +3

No. BYD are having a bumper year. Starting to overtake Tesla.

This is all about competition as new players like Geely are entering the market. This is great for prices.

        • +1

BYD do petrol cars and evs so you can't really compare over all sales with Tesla that only do EVs its like comparing toyota with tesla yes toyota makes way more car sales but its all petrol cars.

          • +2

@kungfuman: They do, but last year they overtook Tesla for EV sales.BYD EV 2.26 million Vs 1.63million Tesla.

            • +1

@Jake Pebbles: they always combine there hybrid sales with there ev sales so the number looks bigger. always have they never seperate it.

              • +1

@kungfuman: You can find EV car sales.
The best-selling EVs in January 2026 were:
                BYD Sealion 7 – 1,171 sales
                BYD Atto 2 – 562 sales
                Zeekr 7X – 418 sales

@kungfuman: Yet this deal is for a full EV…

      • They're doing well, all car makers do end of model year runouts

        • -5

remember BEV and PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle) are not real evs. they are petrol cars or ICE cars. Real ev's don't have ICE inside of them. Pure electric cars only run on electric not petrol. Combining these cars with there evs is just inflating numbers to make there sales numbers look good.

          • +3

            @kungfuman:

BEV and PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle) are not real evs

I guess you meant Hybrids of all kind and names and colours are not real EVs.

As I understand BEV is a tautology for Battery EV pompously used by those trying to sell "Hybrids" as just another EV (which is not correct)

Or did I miss it completely?

    • it's enough to go to Sydney for a holiday and drive back to Melbourne?

    • Not any more, VIC is cheaper than NSW by $90 on their website. $54,900 in VIC or $54,990 in NSW.

    • +30

Yeah same bro, I'm the same with Bitcoin, in at $3,000.

      • +9

Yeah same bro, I’m same with gold, in at $200.

        • -1

The rate at which they are dropping , you might have a shot by end of the month 😅

        • +5

Yeah same bro, I'm the same with buying a house for price of 6 months post man salary.

    • +3

It is already cheaper than a similar spec ICE car, I dont think they need to drop their prices…

      • -5

They do, they need to convert all the medium hybrid SUV buyers (eg. RAV4 crusier) which is now selling for a higher price tag. EV cars are more expensive to insure and have far less range so they need more than just the latest cutting edge technology to draw them over, especially since the Sealion 7 has a sub-standard boot size to try and make it look more slick which was a mistake losing tens of thousands of families with prams.

    • +4

Whoever mocking you do not understand it is actually a $40k model, plus 30% premium only for Australian

      • +2

But don't we pay a premium on most cars? So when you compare this car to others sold in Australia it is already at a decent price?

Not saying that us having to pay a premium is great, just comparing apples with apples.

        • -2

Not as much as the Chinese cars

Most are just stored and gathering dust / over production.

        • +1

GWM TANK and TESLA are all made in China, their MSRP in Australia and China are fairly identical, unlike BYD, ZEEKR, XPENG, DEEPAL, etc.

    • Same bro in at $0.80/L 98 Fuel

  • Had to come down in price. Competition heating up especially with BZ4X coming in at $60k drive away.

    • +13

I had a look at both currently the BZ4x is $62664 for the FWD version its also a touch smaller 200mm over all length but it does have a bigger range its a hot market thats for sure.

      • +4

Toyota are aggressively pushing additional discounts on the bz4x. I got mine at below the fleet price, for 51k (not including driveaway cost, plus a charger included (installation extra). Hard to justify a byd at this price point, especially given the range difference (590 for the 2wd bz4x). You can get the toyota bz4x within a week or two as well.

        • +40

Different cars in my eyes. The BYD is much better appointed. Just sit in them.

          • +9

@BusMan247: I did. I very much preferred the bz4x for the ride and build quality. The byd was better than the previous bz4x, but the 2026 bz4x was much better to me.

Slightly lower level of features however, for eg no sunroof or auto parking.

            • +14

@Ezuku: Does anyone ever use auto parking? I’ve got it on my car, and used it once to play with it, and haven’t touched it since

              • +3
              • +1

@87percent: Eh true. No ventilated seats either on the base 2wd, which I understand is present on the sealion. You have to pay for the connected features after a year as well with the bz4x, although I'm not particularly interested in them. The bz4x comes with a granny charger which is nice too, while I wait for toyota to sort out my fast charger.

I know it's very standard now, but I really like the 360 degree camera a lot. Really helps when trying to squeeze into gaps.

              • +2

@87percent: Salesperson demoed it for me on test drive, hit a kerb immediately. Never used it in mine.

                • +38

@SanguinarySeraph: You just reminded me of a funny thing that happened to me back in the day.

I was shopping for a new family car and had my eyes on the Nissan Dualis+2.

I went to Dandenong Nissan and test drove it. Back then, behind the dealership was Dandenong Creek and the salesman got me to meander down the creek to "showcase" the hill descent feature. Now I researched this car back to front and I knew it didn't have it.

He would not have a bar of it, and so we swapped seats. He pressed a button, which IIRC correctly was the central locking button, so we rolled down, and down, and by the time he slammed the brakes it was too late and we'd crashed in the water. Lucky for both of us Dandy Creek was near dry, but the damage to the front was fairly extensive.

                  I didn't buy the car.

          • +3

@BusMan247: "The BYD is much better appointed. Just sit in them."

It is not. Open up the bonnet, the very low density foam and check out some of the plastic housing and you will notice BYD is of an inferior build.

Source - I own an Atto 3 and Seal Performance. As well Toyota + Lexus.

Toyota build quality is superior. BYD wins on the EV platform being a battery manufacturer and ahead in the EV game.

            • +1

              @SetTheFaqUp:

Source - I own an Atto 3 and Seal Performance. As well Toyota + Lexus.

              You own 4 cars ?

              • +1

@whyisave: He also own an airplane

              • +2

@whyisave: 7 now, 4 being for weekends/track days. Sorry, the Lexus/Toyota is a GS(not a "Toyota" badge), but stands true on better material used in a Toyota (their interior is pretty good these days) than a BYD.

BYD is good value and not a bad car, but corners have been cut. As poor as that the bonnet stoppers often need the owner to adjust them after delivery - too high, bonnet won't close easily.

            • +2

@SetTheFaqUp: 'Appointments' means features, fruit, toys, gizmo's. Build quality is a different issue.

              • @wfdTamar: Yes. Been reading too much poor journalism with their leather appointed seats description. My bad.

        • +1

Which dealer did you get that deal from? I’m in the market for either a FWD bz4x or KIA ev3 LR but I think I prefer the Toyota

        • That's a great price. Is this actually for the refreshed MY26 model?

          • +4

@SeanConnery: Absolutely the 2026. They actually didn't even bother to try and sell the 2025 model and just sent their demo straight to used cars.

It really is night and day difference between the 2025 and 2026. The feature set is far better, the range increased by 30 percent, it's much quieter inside. As an added bonus they dropped the price by $10k.

They sent it through to me within a week of ordering as well. I do think they may have made a few errors on the price though, but it's hard to know.

I don't think I'm supposed to have gotten the charger given the price I obtained it for (below fleet), but toyota said they'll honor what I was told.

        • +4

Sealion 7 offers superior, more modern specs for its price point. The bZ4X is for buyers prioritizing more conservative driving experience.
          Sealion 7 Premium has 230kW/ 380Nm rear motor (6.7s 0-100km/h),
          while bZ4X FWD has 165kW/ 269Nm (7.4s 0-100km/h).

    • +6

I’m not sure if this was sarcasm, the bz4x is still terrible.

      • -1

Thats a pretty extreme exaduration. It's a big step forward compared to last model. Whilst i personally would not hand over my hard earnt for it, i wouldn't for the Sealion either.

        • +10

You lost all credibility in that first sentence.

      • +1

Toyota bz4X is so much more efficient and better designed. SL7 got a bigger battery than bz4X but still has more than 100km less range.

        • Toyota bz4x 74.7kwh - 591km WLTP range
        • BYD SL7 82.5kwh - 482km WLTP range
        • Depends what you mean by efficiency.

BYD weighs 300kgs more due to the size and features. It’s can’t fight science although it does a good job trying.

The Toyota weighs substantially less, and is substantially less powerful. So yes it goes further on same power use. But I would argue a much less enjoyable experience, per KM.

    • +8

Lol Bz4x 😂 this car is a disaster, so boring design, old tech

      • +1

Not to mention the rip off price. Thanks to the Chinese competitors, Toyota had to drop the price by $10,000 last month for the new model! Bring it on, can't wait until EV cars are cheaper than other cars, BYD has now done achieved this vs the Toyota RAV4 cruiser hybrid.

        • +1

this is a good point. who cares how many cars BYD pumps out. more competition is a good thing

      • BYD absolutely does not come close to a Toyota. I think the new bz4X is a much better alternative to the BYD. I have a Sealion 6 and its a great car, but I have some issues with the steering wheel (doesn't affect driving) and the service rep said its a common thing. If you pay 55k plus for car, you'd expect it to run like a dream!

    • +11

      BZ4X, delivering yesterday's technology, tomorrow!

No offence but you need to have a look at sales figures if you seriously think BZ4X is competition. Toyota sold 1000 of these last year while BYD sold 13,400 Sealion 7s last year.

      • +2

You need to checkout 2026 bz4x. Way better than the previous model and cheaper. $55,990 + ORC and 591km WLTP range. SL7 has bigger battery and lower range. BYD is the one with yesterday's technology.

        • +3

Thank you for letting me know. I have had a look and the new model is definitely a step in the right direction.

Let's see how the sales figures go this year.

          • @Tommyaka: I love Toyota's but their BEV needs another generation of enhancements. At the current price tier, they are just not offering the features you expect at the price.

        • Toyota looks very efficient & great range but price is $61k DA? I believe this model made in China by AION.

          • -1

@huntabargain: No, 2026 bz4X is primarily made in Japan at Aichi (Motomachi plant).

      • -1

The Bz4X seems to have bad ergonomics with the steering wheel covering the drivers display depending on your height etc. It may not suit some drivers. Personally I think the drivers information display looks dated/overdone/gaudy and the steering wheel particularly ugly and basic looking.
Some iterations of this car can be north of 68k. No deal.

        • Certain cars cop a lot of flack for having a lot of controls on a touchscreen where you often have to look where you're pressing, and with some justification. But somehow cars that have a steering wheel with a complex collection of buttons - often capacitive buttons without any tactile indicators or even a particularly logical layout - somehow get a pass.

The bz4x has 3 push-buttons, an up-down toggle and a 4-way d-pad with central button on the left, and on the right there's one left-right toggle button, two up-down toggle buttons, and 4 other push-buttons. Some of them are arranged in a way that makes reasonable sense, but others just seem like random tack-ons without any ergonomic considerations.

If you're going to put a bunch of controls on the wheel, they need to be well thought out, have tactile landmarks so you don't need to glance down to see what you're pressing, and generally make it easy to get settled into muscle memory. I think Hyundai and Kia have done a great job of this on their recent designs - it looks like a mess IMO (I prefer a clean wheel with as few buttons as possible) but the layout is very logical and tactility is top notch.

          • @klaw81: yeah I agree. capacitative, piano black keys, removal of stalks, and over reliance of screens for HVAC are my pet peeves in modern cars. However for a car that is 68k high grade, the steering wheel is really ugly and the drivers display doesn't help the issue.

It doesn't take much to design things to look beautiful and Toyota should at least try…. Their pedestal of reliability alone can't take them all the way.

For example this is the steering wheel / cabin of the similarly priced Cupra Tavascan.
            https://images.carexpert.com.au/resize/960/-/cms/v1/media/20…

            • @Naigrabzo: Yes, that's a much more up-market looking cabin in general, and much nicer than any Toyota I've seen. The elephant-scrotum grey vinyl they use for anything that's not a touch surface is practical and hard-wearing, but it's not exactly luxurious.

On the other hand, that Cupra might almost be over-done in terms of having too many finishes, features and textures. If Tesla has a minimalist interior, that's getting close to maximalist. And there are still too many buttons on that wheel - I count 18 (capacitive?) buttons + 2 button/knobs on that wheel, and all the buttons are piano black….eww.

              • +1

@klaw81: yeah unfortunately the with the Tavascan, VW group are still making the mistake of capacitative. Next iteration will be normal buttons. I have a Cupra Formentor VZ and the cabin, the car etc are just pure eye candy. Almost a year and I still do a double take when I park it.

                https://i.ytimg.com/vi/fXmS0YGuiME/maxresdefault.jpg

It is not hard to design things nicely and the elephant scrotum that you mention is just part of the laziness of some of these manufacturers.

                • +1

@Naigrabzo: That wheel is sooooo much better, and still looks pretty clean.

  • +2

    what was the original price?

    • +7

      $54,990 plus on-road costs

    • +1

I think when it released a year ago it was around 67k driveaway.

  • -3

    Everyday discounts yawn

  • +8

Probably a sign of stronger competition that we're getting this deal from BYD. Toyota finally made the Bz4x a decent car with it refresh and it price drop brought it close enough that a lot of people who prefer a known brand might opt for. Zeekr has a run away hit with it's 7x, which starts from a similar price (ex ORC) but seems to be have more equipment and an even better fit and finish. Countless Chinese makes and even the VW group are offering sub 60k deals on their similarly sized electric SUVs.

    • +2

Toyota also has the benefit of a solid network of dealers and should have the spare parts distribution better under control. BYD still seems a bit hit and miss in that regard.

      • +8

That might be different in the EV domain. China has all the supply chain & leading tec, with BYD #1 world EV seller, with improving Australian network.

        • +2

It's not worth the paper its written on until they have adequate footprint on the ground. Still loads of issues when it comes to many EVs local support/spairs/repair times. I trust BYD will get there, but it takes a long time. At the end of the day we are more of a dumping ground than a strategic market as far as revenue goes.

        • +2

That's the ironic thing, China has all the tech and supply chain logistics in China sorted, yet the Chinese manufacturers here seem to be consistently poor at it.

BYD in particular keep spruiking their ambitious growth plans here yet seem very reluctant to actually commit some hard $$ upfront and build a solid supply chain here.

      • +1

Umm, the refresh only came in December

        • My bad, I didn't realise there was a refresh. It's good to see Toyota did something because only selling less then 100 cars per month for the previous version is pretty poor for such a well known and established manufacturer.

    • True… also check out the Skoda offerings at this price.

  • +4

I mean they have been running $3k cash back on this model which is the same discount they're providing here in a different format

    Will monitor and see

    • 🤫

    • +2

Cash back works out better for novated leases. You enjoy the tax discount on the full purchase price while getting $3k in your pocket.
