730

First post, sorry for any mistakes. Not an all time low for a 5080 but easily the lowest since the RAM crisis that I have seen. I caved and spent $1750 just after xmas but would have jumped on this if I hadn't

Anyone have this model that can comment on noise/heat/coil whine?

    • +8

yeah I got it last year, was worried about the comments re: noise but it's absolutely fine. Last time someone asked the same thing I recorded the GPU going from idle to load, with a microphone right next to the GPU: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1lpprCZ17PQAdCUOJ7zNgfUykzp2…

EDIT: just saw this was for a 5080.. mine is a 5070ti.. will keep this comment here in case it's still of interest.

      • the board should be mostly the same, i would assume. what makes a 5070 different to a 5080 is the actual quality of the gpu chip

    • +4

I have this, I haven't experienced any coil whine but I have had it undervolted to optimise performance

    • +3

People getting undervoted for asking legit question is crazy!

    • damn i like paid that much for a 5070 TI MSI at launch lol prices have gone down alot since launch, Don't know the brand though would rather go MSI or Asus

    • +5

I got this model from centrecom on release. Note my comments are in a SFF case so hotter and noiser then you would normally expect.

No coil whine I have detected, notably less then the MSI 3070 it replaced. Big difference I found is it doesn't work hard on minor things (like light weight games e.g. League of Legends) and the fans stay motionless for longer.

Fans can be noisy when really running, but not enough to overcome a set of headphones or speaker, noticable but not annoying (the 240mm aio is worse in my opinion).

It has a silent bios mode but I honestly couldn't hear the difference so I have left it in performance mode.

I have had decent luck with overclocking for benchmark numbers, but everyday it just runs stock performance mode with no issue

    • +1

I have this model. It's much quieter than my Dell RTX 3080. Similar noise level as my RTX 3070, not distractive when gaming. The card is huge compared to previous cards, make sure you have a large PC case.

  • +4

    still not worth it

    • +1

yep - 'needs' (lol) to be around 1500 but that aint gunna happen this gen now…

      • +6

Or next gen… Or pretty much all future gens :(

        • +2

Unless AI bubble bursts. Even if one large AI company goes down like OpenAI, keeps others from hogging GPUs. But one can only wish.

  • +1

Do people suggest this or the 5070 ti? Any suggestions on a specific one from centre com to jump on? Is the Zotac one posted already the way to go? Would like something quiet.

    • +18

Dollar per frame, the 5070 Ti is still better. But for absolute fps, the 5080 is still better

    • +2

I got the rtx5070ti gaming pro (don't get the v1) from Amazon recently for $1400. Very pleased with it. Very easy to under volt dropping the power consumption and clocking over 3000MHz. Almost rtx5080 performance (which of course you could also tune up)

    • +1

I bought a top model 5070ti (it has like a 5090 cooler on it) on boxing day that was on sale for ~1450 and was lucky in top 96 percentile when testing (unsure if they binned better chips or I just won the silicon lottery), so it worked out just below the average 5080 for speed. It was just enough of an upgrade over my 3080ti. If you have a better card than a 3080ti and don't need more vram, overall I think don't bother upgrading and wait out until next gen.

      • That's the gpu I upgraded from too. Biiiig improvement, plus all the fancy new features and much more efficient /lower power and heat

      • I upgraded through good fortune from a 3080 to a 4070ti and one big difference I found was that DLSS actually works ok now and doesn't hurt my eyes.

    • -2

or wait for 9090 Ti for $9090 in couple years time.

    • I have a 5070 Ti i play all games maxed out at 4k i also have pcie 5.0, i get between 50fps and 200fps depending on the game

    • +1

dont waste your money. get a 9070xt. and if your going to say but i want dlss 4.5 . dlss 4.5 and FSR 4 in real-world
use is basicly the same. you wont even notice a difference. they are both good.

      • Yes, but FSR 4 is barely supported.

        • +1

          Not true.

Virtually every major AAA from 2024-2026 does (95% compaired to Nvidia 98%), either natively or via a one-click AMD driver toggle that upgrades 85%+ of FSR 3.1 DX12 games to full FSR 4. You might be able to find one or two that don't like Doom: The Dark Ages, but it runs great anyway.

          • @Kezzbot: Barely supported in games before 2024*

            • +2

@iseeyou1312: Old games run really well on modern GPUs. There is no need for upscaling.

              • @Kezzbot: Tell that to The Witcher 3 and CP2077 lol. Ones with heavy RT don't. 4k non-RT can be better, but it doesn't make sense to not use upscaling as it's either free FPS or much less demanding compute.

Even pretty reasonable games like Elden Ring still need upscaling to get a decent FPS at 4k max settings.

                • @iseeyou1312: CP2077 has native FSR 4 and the other two has FSR 4 support via optiscaler. The points you raise are good. but i'd pushback and say that with my 9070 XT i can run all those games at 4K max settings with good frame rates and no issues. Remember 9070 XT is 1k, 5080 is 2K.

  • +3

I have given up on Nvidia

    • +3

      AMD aren't your friend either

      • +1

        No they are not.

    • +2

Kids getting priced out of the game, like the housing market.

      • 4K gaming. Any RTX card can still play pretty much everything on lower settings.

      • there's a touch of irony to your comment. boomers have their houses, but could never experience gaming like we do today. they could barely dream of touching 4k in anything. even in midrange gaming, we're leaps and bounds ahead of gaming in the boomers gen

comparison is truly the thief of joy

  • -3

Get the OC version, not this.

  • Just wait for the new cards coming from amd, with the price hikes i wouldnt touch nvidia atm.

    • +1

But a 5080 is better than any AMD card

      • -1

        He said new

        • -1

But a 5080 is better than any AMD card

Will most likely still be true

      • a 5080 is about 10-15% better then a 9070xt but at 100% more $

        • Price v performance with gpus has never been linear

          • +1

@Bruceflix: yes of course, but you avoid the point. And that is for 90% of people, the price does not justify the cost. Most people buy Nvidia because they are more popular, not because it's the best choice for them.

            • -2

              @Kezzbot:

Most people buy Nvidia because they are more popular

Really poorly worded. It should be, "Nvidia are more popular because most people buy them"

It comes down to, if you want better performance, buy Nvidia. If you want better quality upscaling, buy Nvidia. If you want better performance with LLM, buy Nvidia.

GPUs have never been good value for money. Especially at the high end.

              • -1

@Bruceflix: "Buy Nvidia, buy Nvidia, buy Nvidia!" It should always come down to best bang for buck, not which company has the fastest card or tribal extremism. Like Q:why did you buy a 5060? A: Because I heard Nvidia is the best. DAF!

                • -1

                  @Kezzbot:

It comes down to, if you want better performance, buy Nvidia. If you want better quality upscaling, buy Nvidia. If you want better performance with LLM, buy Nvidia

Do you deny any of these points?

It should always come down to best bang for buck

No, it should be done to what best suits your requirements.

:why did you buy a 5060?

Discussion was about highend. I at least agree, no one should buy a 5060.

                  • +1

@Bruceflix: -Do you deny any of these points?

No, but it's misleading. because for most people who don't have unlimited money, it should almost always come down to bang for buck.

-No, it should be done to what best suits your requirements.

Ok yes everyone is looking for something that suits their requirements. If you need a 5090 and can afford it, then get it. But if you are looking for a card with 5080 performance, then you are better off getting the 9070xt because in real-world game playing, you won't notice the difference, and it is half the price. Again, 99% of people don't have large amounts of expendable income, therefore bang for buck is a huge factor. if you do than thats cool, but we are on a forum talking to most people.

                    • +1

                      @Kezzbot:

if you are looking for a card with 5080 performance, then you are better off getting the 9070xt

9070xt does not have 5080 performance. If you are looking for 5080 performance you are better off with a 5080. If you don't require 5080 performance maybe the 9070xt is a better fit.

                      • -1

@Bruceflix: sounds like you just want to argue. your not being rational at all. so what you're saying is if you're playing Marvels Spiderman 2 @4k and you're getting about 80fps with the 9070xt, and you're saying you recommend people pay $1,000 more and get the 5080 so you can get about 95fps.

                        Its a tough sell.

                        • -4

@Kezzbot: Sounds like you're just one of those one-eyed AMD fanbois.

  • +4

You can 3D print custom cover plates for this model with designs by the manufacturer.

  • +1

Bought this one and returned it…. If youre happy or used to having whiny fans and a grinding noise on wind down you'll be fine. It's functional and cools, but those fan bearing noises it makes drove me nuts.

    • I read about that too before I got the rtx5070ti version of this, so got it from Amazon just in case I needed to return it. Fortunately I've had no such issue.

  • saw 9950X3D also $960 close to ATL

  • Oh, of course… I just bought this the other day for $121 more since I knew GPU prices were due to rise significantly in the near future and this will be a necessary upgrade for video editing for me, but I ummed and ahhed about it for months. It hasn't arrived yet.
I've asked centrecom if they can refund the difference but I'm not holding hope based on their refund policy.
EDIT: Looks like it's a storewide 10% off sale.

  • +1

no reason for these old models to be this pricey, but ngreed is real

  • Damn this is a good price. Bought the PNY OC version for $1765 not too long ago. Managed to claim the TRS refund though

    • +1

Haha imagine claiming the TRS at the airport and carrying the GPU around the world. I did mine too on the Zotac 5070 Ti, luckily its a small SFF version…

      • Haha I was doing it with a toddler and a baby pram.

  • Opinions on buying this now or HODL for the price of a 4090 to drop? Yes the 4090 has more vram, but I'm still amazed at how expensive they still see for a 2nd hand card…

    • +4

Just get a 5080 n get double vram upgrade in china

      • is this really viable? are there are guides?

        • Yes there are some places on taobao selling it if I'm not mistaken.

Gamer nexus actually went to china and videoed them doing it.

They mostly use refurbished parts though…

          • @MaxHashrate: full respect to the mad geniuses in shenzen that steve interviewed! but the risk seems way too high to ship a 32gb 5080 from overseas

  • The coil whine is pretty obvious if u run ILM at 100% before the fan kicks in

  • worth noting that the 60xx series cards should be coming out next year, which will be better suited for gta 6. if you are able to wait, and your priorities lay that way

personally hoping for more vram but doubtful

    (speculation)
