Last time the mods removed this deal.
In the comments of that post someone said ordered from EV Charging Australia and successfully received it.
Definitely price beat with Bunnings if you are able to, I did that last year and am very happy.

  • Works on all EVs?

    • +1

Yes, the Tesla Wall Connector is compatible with all electric vehicles in Australia that use the standard Type 2 charging port. It acts as a universal charger, supporting non-Tesla EVs

      • +2

But it doesn’t have any smarts - so if you are looking to only charge from excess solar or on a schedule for example, it’s not going to be much use.

Also, do you want to give Elon money?

        • +1

It can do scheduled charging, so we are getting $0.08 per kwh on the AGL EV Plan. Works with our Nissan Leaf and Mini Cooper SE.

        • Smarts can work if you have a Tesla vehicle though .. but that has more to do with the EV than the charger.

          • @noz: All the smarts we use are build into the charger / tesla app.. It simply turns itself on and off.. no tesla car needed.

            • +1

@ajiau: It's capable of setting charging schedules based on time, definitely. I believe you've missed the point of ninja chickens comment though that it is not a smart charger and hence cannot integrate natively to only charge using excess solar.

I don't think it's even capable of limiting the output and that's also left up to the car. It's just a dumb charger that sends a signal to the car asking how much it can take and then sends that amount of power. It simply can't integrate natively and set it's output to 2kw if you have 2.2kw of excess solar etc nor dynamically adjust as that changes.

Hope this clarifies! It's a great charger, just not smart.

            • @ajiau: You are talking about scheduled charging … not solar aware charging.

              • @noz: Tesla’s official Charge on Solar mode in the Tesla app requires: Powerwall + Tesla vehicle + supported energy setup.

                • @Veedub: You do not need a Powerwall to do solar aware charging with the Wall Connector. ChargeHQ does it just fine without all that. So does EVCC, which is what I use for this exact purpose. Amber for EVs does it also.

                  • @noz: Oohh!! I’ve been looking at EVCC last few days as i didnt want to waste so much money on zappi, and I was thinking of just getting gen 3 wall connector and setting up EVCC on my synology NAS - i have two questions, if you don’t mind

                    1) looks like you need tesla dev account for this, with set amount of queries and polling allowed for $10/month discount, is that more than enough to keep going with EVCC for free?

                    2) i have very little programming knowledge, is EVCC something i can learn myself and copy and paste or is this something I should just forget about and get the zappi without wasting my time?

I am getting FOXESS CQ6 soon with new PVs and wanted to set up an EV charger ideally for excess solar charging but not sure whether i should just get zappi or have a go at free EVCC

                    • @youngchul76: Yes you do need a Tesla dev account, but the trick is to set up a BLE software on a Raspberry Pi. By doing this, the charging current bandwidth is varied as needed between this BLE device and the Tesla vehicle using BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy). By doing this, it drastically reduces the Tesla API calls needed, and you will be well within the free $10/month limit on the Tesla dev account.
The thing is though, if you aren't very technically minded, I would not recommend it unless you are keen and have time to burn. The BLE software, which is free, is here: https://github.com/wimaha/TeslaBleHttpProxy . You will want to have Home Assistant (HA) set up, with EVCC add on.If you aren't familiar with HA, it's a bit of a learning curve and in that case I again would suggest not to bother. You'd be better off going the ChargeHQ $7/month route which is much easier to set up and you won't need to host anything yourself. If you don't want a subscription then yes go with Zappi but it is a lot more expensive than a Tesla Wall Connector.

        • Who do you want to give your money to ninja? I would rather have a mars plan than communism.

          • @jalwa: There are 1001 EVSEs on the market - even some made by a NZ based company. Pretty sure the communists haven’t taken over NZ….

But some people think everyone who’s not Elon is a communist, I guess…

            • -1

@NinjaChicken: Strongly suggest not buying an NZ manufactured EV!! Either buy Tesla or Chinese. I love my Tesla - its the smartest car I have ever driven. Buy the best product at the best price you can. Shopping can be free of politics.

As per previous posts, do NOT buy from EVCA. Use this as a way to get Bunnings to price match. That way you actually get the product, as well as local support if you need it.

Has anyone had any luck getting Bunnings to beat the $664 price with the code?

    • Heads up, no luck with the code but they did agree to pricebeat $699 down to $629.10.

      • +1

Emailed Bunnings with website screenshots showing the 5% and asking for the price beat, they honoured at $597.65. If you haven't bought yet, send them an email.

        • Wow nice work! Already bought this morning but thanks.

        • How’d you get it for that price? What price did they beat?

        • Can you share the email address?

        • +1

Can confirm that I also got the same price beat $597.64 from emailing bunnings

        • +2

Can also confirm was able to price match via email very easily with bunnings and have 30 days to use the quote.

  • Going to start a gofundme to get one of these

    • only if you are the owner of Tesla Owners Australia FB group

Beware of these guys - shocking Trust pilot reviews over last year or two:

They are scammers - ordered form them late last year and never posted nor are they contactable.

    Remove this post please.

    • I have put the following note in the post's description:

Note: Don't buy from EV Charging Australia as they have bad reviews. Go to Bunnings and beat it by 10%.

Thanks OP. Walked into my local Bunnings lsst night and got one for $629.10. I'm no DIY guru and can count on one hand how many times I've set foot in the place but it was relatively straightforward process to price beat (I should do it more often).

I don't have solar and only need a basic charger that will cooperate with my electricity provider's ev plan and the Ioniq 5 that I am picking up next week. This unit should do the trick. I'm looking forward to making the transition to EVs.
