Absolutely, but hey, the 5900x is a great CPU. Could be worse.
My 5800x3D will be well and truly alive and kicking for the forseeable future.
I have both CPUs. Was going to sell the 5900x but might keep it as a backup….
How many backups do you need?
another 5900x reporting in
I got mine at launch and see no reason to change, its been a great CPU.
5950x reporting in . Would it be bottlenecking my 5090 at 4K ?
1080p? For sure
4K? Not really
fat fingers… meant 4090
Ditto - meee too! - with 4070 Super…..does me well in BF6 and my stable CIV5….
Completely agree, I have been toying with the idea of an upgrade, but man I cannot justify the cost of the upgrade thanks to the RAM prices.
5950x with 64Gb of RAM and a 4090 here.
I'm running exact same setup :D
I've also thought about upgrading, but logic just tells me to wait until the 4090 is past its glory days, then just buy a completely new build
Same setup, waiting for zen 6 and a 6090 (if its not over $4k)
So jealous. Been wanting a 4090 (even though I have a 7900xtx) for a long time! So temped to get the 5080, because the price of the 4090 is still going strong ( double the price of a 5080).
Wowzers, I cant find a 4090 anywhere?
@ThadtheChad: pinching myself as I bought my 4090 brand new for $3k from centrecom back in December 2022 .

@sct911: Sweet Jesus…
I bought my Gigabyte OC Gaming 4090 for around that too (slightly under ~2.9ish) in Sept 2023.
Now I love my card a lot more. What is old is new again. lol
@sct911: Just before the 50xx gpus were released with their fake fps, ppl on OCAU were selling their 4090 for $2500. You'd be lucky to find one under $3500.
+1 for another 5900x owner holding on for another couple years
Lowly 5800x owner here, it's been going strong for years and will keep going for a couple more. I just can't afford the $2000 ram to go along with this $661 processor.
It's a 5 year old CPU, it'll be fine lol. There hasn't been any significant changes since then.
I'm running an Intel i5-6600 which is 10 years old now and it's still running well. Can lag a little in games or from time to time but otherwise you wouldn't know it's many generations behind.
Exactly. The need to upgrade is fueled by tech youtubers and influencers.
so will my 2600
Good price if you dont want to buy off aliexpress
Factory New?
Amazing CPU, was such an insane jump 6 months ago even from a 12700k. Awesome price, definitely buy if you are CPU bottlenecked in games; you won't need to upgrade it for many years.
Not sure why I'm getting negged here. It's very good.
definitely buy if you are CPU bottlenecked in games
Crazy, if true /s
Well I mean yes, it might be obvious. But people hold off because of pricing. This is a great price to bite the bullet
@nikoris: That's a great price too. This deal's price is worth it, that's all I'm saying. I'm not sure what your problem is
So cpu are not affected. AI only eat Rams and SSDs.
Just wait
Bitcoin used to eat GPU for breakfast. Well. They still do.
I heard sad news saying GPU price will go up soon.
Somehow I doubt AI data centres are running X3D CPUs…
…. For now
At the end of the day CPUs are all competing for fab resources too. I understand TSMC is booked out for the next couple of years, so the pricing is already set, and hopefully the bubble bursts before then. If not (and that's very big if, IMO), then we might see CPU prices go out of control too.
Quite true.
I'm very very glad I was able to update my whole system in August.. 32gb ram for 170 cl30 6000. 7800x3d ae chip for ~400 etc. Swapped from my 5600x/16gb ddr4! Was a great time to buy in hindsight. Also bumped from 3060 ti to 9070 non xt (was like 830? delivered). I'm set for 5 years at least honestly!
Data centers do use X3D chips(chiplets), it's part of the reason why the 5700X3D disappeared from the shelves.
It eats CPU's too, just not consumer grade ones. But memory chips? Those can be bought in bulk before they ever see the back of a consumer grade DIMM.
they just released 9850 for 799, who tf is gonna buy that one lol
It's like, 4% better faster, and uses much more electricity. It's not worth it.
Recently bought a pre-built PC, it's got 7800X3D, is there any benefit on upgrading to this? 5080 32 GB Ram 4k Monitor @ 240 Hz
Yes if you like wasting money or clout, which seems like it.
Yep, that's what I thought. I'll spend the money replace their fake noisy fans with a premium, quieter version instead.
If your thermals are in-check (7800x3d doesnt run particularly hot, and caps at 87degrees or whatever anyway and honestly doesnt care about running at that temp), you could just PWM control them and run them all half speed or 2/3rds speed, save yourself some money!
No need at all, minimal improvment if any at all.
Yep, that's right.
I’m one of the few sods that’s upgraded during this crisis and it’s funny to think while this CPU is a great sale if I had waited until now any saving I would’ve had would’ve been made redundant by RAM and Storage both increasing even further since I bought my parts.
Entire ps5 gaming console $700: too dam expensive!
One single component of a pc $660: not bad!
To be fair this is the second best gaming cpu in the world - not really comparable
It's been a long time since PC's were better value than a console.
I used to be a heavy PC gamer but is a lot cheaper to play on console (unless you pirate). You also benefit from getting physical games so you can sell them after, which you often can't do on PC.
Yeah I think the Steam Machine will completely shake up the market, anyone who doesn't need windows-specific computers, will probably gravitate to 'all in one' machines that can do both, act as a general PC but also as a console. There's a strong chance I'm on my last true all-out PC build for gaming or other uses.. The rise in handhelds (other than a Switch), and ESPECIALLY if Sony get off their ass and properly release a good, self powered handheld (not streaming.. I like my Portal, but it really needed to be better.. OLED screen at least!)
Not dealing with Windows BS is a boon too.
I'm even close to replacing my parents Windows 11 OS with Zorin OS (just because its a pain to update everytime, as they're on a 6th gen computer, not win 11 natively compatible), but i recently updated it via USB without format to 25H2 so its good for another year or so.
Not equivalent. PS5s CPU is more like a ryzen 3700x~. Very different leagues of CPU. But as Dingo said, Consoles have now long outdone PCs for straight value.
This is mostly driven by the fact we're hit a plateau of sorts in graphical fidelity; console graphics used to be way more limited, but with upscaling and what not, they're powerful enough to match PC's for the general gamer in quality and what not. Will it beat a 2-3k PC? No. Will I still get an insanely detailed game like Cyberpunk to run at 60fps on a PS5? Yes! And on a TV thats usually metres away, mate that's a great experience and smaller imperfections are imperceptible
AM4 user here and looks like I'll remain that way till AM6 or later. I'll be honest, AM4 does not feel slow on any system (have 5500, 5800X3D,5900X, 5950X). Did all my RAM and Storage upgrades well before the AI monster decided to f* the consumer market.
I just upgraded to AM4 from LGA 1151. I could reuse my existing DDR4 RAM and get a huge speed bump for a very small cost.
I think AM4 is a no-brainer for anyone who needs a budget or midrange build right now. You can use DDR4 RAM you probably already have lying around and wait out the RAM price hikes.
I'm looking at doing this too, but even used AM4 prices seem crazy now
The prices on AM4 processors seem fine to me. For example, check out Scorptec.
For a budget build, $179 for a 5600 isn't bad at all. For a bit more grunt, a 5800X for $349 seems quite reasonable too.
Yes, these aren't brand-new processors. But they're still quite competitive, and paired with a reasonable DDR4 AM4 board (and some DDR4 RAM you probably have lying around already), they will deliver quite decent performance.
@axyh: Ahh, yeah those look pretty good. The other issue was limited choice of AM4 motherboards, but it looks like those might be picking back up a bit in the current climate.
The X3D CPUs are still pretty pricey though, and I figured those would be the sensible choice if I'm going to be using old and relatively slow RAM?
I think the major question is really how much to spend on an old platform with no upgrade path.
@boozed: AM4 makes the most sense for a low-midrange build to tide you over until the RAM crisis ends.
A 5600/5600X would pair just fine with a 9060 XT. A 5700X would pair nicely with a 9070 XT.
Over-investing in a top-of-the-line processor possibly doesn't make a lot of sense with an older socket and older RAM. But AM4 really seems like a no-brainer right now for a budget or midrange upgrade.
I bought my current PC back in 2019, Ryzen 5 3600, 2070 Super, 32gb ram. Been wanting to upgrade because some of the newer games are starting to look….not great. But these PC prices can get (profanity). My whole rig cost $2500 for everything. Now $2500 will get you a graphics card and maybe a CPU lol.
Same bro, bought pre covid. Running a 3600x and a 2080.
All these people asking about if they should do an incremental upgrade at best, and here I am just hoping nothing in mine fails in the next two years before prices normalise a bit.
You can easily get a 7800x3d and RX 9070 system even now from companies that post here for around that same price.
Right now there is just an AMD GPU option but you see 5070 deals for not much more occasionally also.
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/946100
Let's not pretend this is normal though, there is a global ram chip shortage causing this.
Your rig is fine, if you just upgrade your GPU everything else can stay the same.
Finally pulled the trigger on my first AMD system in ~25 years…thanks for posting this OP.
I'm about to do the same. What mobo and GPU are you going with?
Im looking to go with Red Devil RX9070XT 16GB GPU… not sure on mobo.
just make sure its not an ASRock and you'll be fine
Have been running the 9800X3D on an ASRock Steel Legend for almost a year just fine. They fixed that issue.
Also bought one. I will use it with an Asus TUF GAMING B650EM-E WIFI, which was suggested from a member here a couple of weeks ago. Got it from CentreCom for $224.
https://www.asus.com/motherboards-components/motherboards/tu…
Purchased the Asus motherboard at the same time:

Parts below were purchased throughout the year last year:

I’ve seen some MSI motherboards recommended but then you look them up and people report some annoying issues with them.
Can anyone recommend a good motherboard that will just work, not bottleneck anywhere and not fry the motherboard like an ASRock?
From what I understand best to go 870 for future proofing.
good deal. expired now though
Every time I think about buying a newer CPU, I remember Ram and Storage costs are beyond ridiculous, and thus, my 5900x will have to stay good for another few years at least
