[PS5] Baldur's Gate 3 $79.46 @ PlayStation Store

180

I believe this is ATL or equal to for PS5 digital, sale started yesterday runs through 26th. Usually $105.

I have been keeping an eye on this for past week. Yes it is probably better on PC but seems like it has good reviews for a couch ps5 game + co-op

  • Feels like this game will never get cheap

I know its a weird thing to say on OzB of all places but I do wish more games did this. Feels like 95% of triple A titles are half price after a month, which just discourages people from buying the game at launch and makes those games feel like shovelware a month in. Better for the industry to maintain the price if you think your game is worth it.

And then you have Nintendo who rarely have sales and their games are constantly full price for years (or even the lifespan of the console) lmao

        • Nintendo does that because it knows that if you have a pattern of heavy discounts, people start to see those discounts as "normal".

For PC games, I've become conditioned to only pick them up at half-price or better. I don't think I've paid more than $40 for a PC game at any time in the past decade. When I don't wait for that price, there's invariably a heavy sale a few months later, and I regret jumping the gun.

With Nintendo, a 20% off sale may come around once per year, and even then only on some games. I'm happy to lose out on that minor discount to play the games day one, comfortable in the knowledge that I won't regret my decision by seeing the game for $20 a few months later. Basically, the decision comes down to "is this game worth the asking price?". Often it's not, but if it is, I can buy it comfortable in the knowledge that the launch price is the long-term price.

@axyh: I agree with your thoughts, especially when so many games need 2-3 months of patches at launch to become stable/playable.

          • +2

@axyh: If anything launch is the best time to buy Nintendo titles, especially if you get physical copies. Day one Big W, JB etc often have launch pricing for a week, then the games increase and go a long time without further discount. Seen many posts here where people are jumping on Nintendo sales 6-12 months after game launch where the price is the same as what many retailers had for the launch window.

Even digitally, makes sense to just bank eshop credit when it’s 10% off and then buy day 1 if you’re interested, as it’ll probably be a year or two until you see a 20% sale anyway.

      • Happy to have sales, I never buy at launch for that reason. Sure if games were released at 25% less than what they generally are and stayed there I would be more inclined to buy at launch but with most games being $80-$120 at launch these days I can't justify the money especially without there being reviews to go by. If games released at $50-$60 I would consider buying them straight away but they know they can sell them higher as people buy the hype and then have a sale a couple months later to make people like me think we are getting a deal.

Your viewpoint is my point. It is a real shame that we have been preconditioned to not buy games at launch. The industry would be a lot healthier if companies priced their games accurately rather than actively try to take advantage of "whales" that are happy to buy whatever garbage at full-price. Case in point, Borderlands 4 is an unremarkable but somewhat fun coop jaunt. It would have been a success if the starting price was about $60 but everyone knows you shouldn't be buying it at $120. By the time the sales happen, the hype trains moved on as well. It's lose lose.

@Tommybot: Even now I generally won't buy games over $40 unless its something that really peaks my interest. Though, I have an obsession with Rocket League (yep, im still trash despite playing for almost 10 years) so I generally don't feel rushed to buy many games until they are cheap since im pretty well occupied. I don't think I have paid more than $65 for a game in my life, only game that I would consider paying over that for coming up would probably be GTA VI which I'm hoping will have a sale at $80 or under in the 1st year but with it's hype im not even sure it will go sub $100 in 12 months :(

          • @Tommybot: Civilization is another example of this.

The new version is often launched in an unfinished state, with a high price tag, the super-fans basically work as beta testers, then the game is fixed by the time of the second expansion and goes on sale for $10.

I really can't justify buying at launch anymore. If I can have the game for 90% off with all the bugs fixed, I'll wait for that.

  • was the exact same price for the Christmas sale and the Black Friday sale - this is the "normal" sale price for it now

I've heard that there's a 2 player option - my wife and I are both gamers and love 2 player games and I was wondering how the 2 player version of this is? If it's not great we'd probably just do single player and take turns like we do on other 1 player games

I am in same boat as you. I plan on buying game this week and play with my partner. I watched a few videos regarding ps5 co-op and it looks good! Just search bg3 ps5 co-op or wait to see if someone comments

      • +1

It totally is - one of the best co-op two player games in a while. We are now playing another game in split screen co-op, but added two other friends online and works seamlessly.

        • That's good to know! I've heard a lot of people say the two player version is only really good after playing the single player campaign so wasn't sure how it'd go! Glad it's a good game, definitely going to grab it at this price!

@Opaquer: I'm playing through it with my daughter and it's excellent. The only gripe we have is that we can't see a way to convert couch co-op games into online co-op games.

I wish they would restock the physical edition, I played the 2 hour trial and loved it

Awesome game but i quit beginning of act 3 when i had max levelled. Was just no motivation nor incentive to keep going after the adrenaline addiction of levelling up. Poor gameplay design that everyone hits max level start of act 3

‘I only play games as long as number go up’ is certainly a take.

Is $80 for a game that came out 6 months ago really a bargain? So glad I skipped this generation of consoles, I see zero benefits over a PC. Any saving in upfront cost is dwarfed by how hard you get reamed for games/accessories/subscriptions.

      • Sorry forgot what year it is, 2.5 years ago which is even crazier.

Take a wild guess how much Baldur's Gate 3 costs on PC…

      • +1

Took a punt and purchased BG3 from GOG while it was still early access in December 2020 for $29.99. Well before any one knew it’d be as critically received as it was on final release.

Was a gamble but, even if I had faith in Larian delivering something decent. There was some concerns back then whether they could do the franchise justice.

It's been on sale on PC considerably cheaper than this 14 times by my count:

  • i bought for 66 dollars AUD physical when i was in japan and it has english language although it is not advertised on the box

  • Good price if this were for physical copy
