Alienware 16X Aurora 16" WQXGA 240Hz Laptop (Intel Core Ultra 7, GeForce RTX 5060) $1899 + Postage ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

420

It looks like a pretty good deal to me for a mid-tier gaming laptop.

I won’t be buying this myself, as my Alienware 16 R1 (RTX 4070) is still performing well enough for my needs.

Posting in case someone else is looking for a gaming laptop and finds this useful.

Why the hold? Plus where did you see it?

      • +9

They probably didn't, or it's the marshmallow special of "look for it yourself" but then will link an ebay post with an expired coupon of a totally different machine with a different gpu 😂

Either way, most laptops priced 1K higher than this will have a 5060/5070. Happy to be proven wrong though :)

    • +1

bro 1k extra is massive in this current financial inflation is high how could you afford ….

      • Probably got financial advice fromt he BMW car being a high yield investment guy….

I bought this from Dell on 2 Jan for an invoice price of about $270 bucks more (including discounts). Just outside the price match period, argh! I guess not so bad as I used $200 AMEX offer and got Battlefield 6 included per the Intel Holiday Gaming Bundle (ended 31 Jan).

Note Dell don't sell this configuration anymore, they have the same spec but with 32gb ram (instead of 16) for about a thousand bucks more.

Mind giving a quick review of the device, please?

      • +8

        Yep - some quick thoughts:
        - I'm not a hardcore techie or gamer but I do have a moderate level of PC knowledge - haven't really been following the technology trends lately though
        - Bought this as a replacement for my 10+ year old Dell XPS 8700 desktop (which is slowly dying as the graphics card died so I had to use the on-board Intel one, SATA ports started dying and wouldn't recognise HDDs etc.)
        - This laptop is heavy (but expected for what it is) and solidly built.
        - Need to use the external power adapter for gaming (otherwise games crash or you get low FPS)
        - Requires genuine DELL adapter (round socket) to use properly at full power. Can't charge via USB-C on my dock. And can't use a non-Dell adapter for gaming (I had a charger exactly the same spec for an old HP laptop but it detects it as non-genuine, whilst it charges it doesn't pull the full power I'm guessing as playing games with a non-genuine adapter has low FPS, then when I plug in the Dell one the FPS increase after a few seconds).
        - Screen is great - given 16" is huge and high 240hz refresh rate. Not the brightest but OK for normal indoor use. (I had it on max brightness when gaming)
        - Graphics card is good. I only play GTA5 and BattleField 6. Both run OK at 2560x1440 on an external monitor and 2560x1600 on internal monitor. I've put on Ultra (highest) settings with Nvidia DLSS and they are both playable. Although BF6 on some scenes the frame rate drops but from memory the average is around 60FPS. I think it would run even smoother at 1080p resolution. Note without DLSS turned on, BF6 would be unplayable at this high res (but GTA5 was OK). Note there is only 8GB VRAM and I've read many reviews saying better to get something with 16GB+. In BF6 the settings warn me that it exceeds the 8GB (and in the performance overlay it does go slightly over most of the time but still playable).
        - Fans can be loud in Performance or Overdrive modes (ie. when gaming where the default is Performance mode). Alienware Command Centre allows you to adjust performance profiles for specific games. Normal web browsing etc. in 'Balanced' mode doesn't ramp up the fans.
        - NOTE Dell had an Alienware Aurora 16 (not 16X) with similar specs but a worse screen (not 240hz), worse camera (not 1080), less powerful CPU and a few other things that aren't as good. I almost bought that one but thanks to reading a few reviews, was alerted to the fact that this one was roughly the same price and a lot better. This was before they removed this model from Dell.com.au and now only have the 32GB RAM version for a thousand bucks more (per my previous post).

And that's about it! Overall seems like a good laptop at the price point.

damn im not gamer but still want it but no $…..

  • +1

Damn this is a good price for Alienware branded. But already spent $2k on upgrading my desktop recently and shouldn't be wasting money at this moment.. arghh..

  • +3

It looks nice but… get a desktop for gaming, people.

    • +13

Yeah, I tried that but the coffee shop people, librarians, bus drivers and air hostesses all said "You can't use your computer there" and "Wouldn't a laptop have been more suitable for your use case?"

The hospital went further and threatened to discharge me if I ever unplugged another patient's breathing machine because I needed the extra power point for my monitor.

      • You get power outlets that can charge this laptop in planes, cafes and buses? Because otherwise what's you battery life gaming in these locations?

        • +4

          ~3-4hrs light use
          <1.5hrs light gaming
<2.37mins AAA gaming unless Cyberpunk 2077, then ~0.029mins

      • You're gaming in those places?

    • Noisy cooling fans in some GFX cards to keep cool the GPU down in QLD. Other states heatwaves too.
But yeah had an MSI TITAN 17" gaming laptop and it blowed 60+ degrees out to the right where my hand was.

Lesson of this short story, either way you need custom cooling and custom configurations to keep the PC or LAPTOP cool and quiet to play 10XXp 21XXp and 4XXXp etc.
Same for PS5, mate had to put A/C in the room recently, everywhere is getting warmer. We wonder why.

The screen is really good. 240Hz makes a huge difference when you binge-play games 4-5 hours with minimal breaks in terms of fatigue (I know it is not healthy :( ).

Also thumbs up to Dell's out of warranty services. My Alienware laptop (a mid-lower range one) bought in 2022 has its motherboard malfunctioned last year, 2 years outside of the warranty (2 years for mine), chatted with their online customer services and they agreed to send a technician onsite to replace the motherboard (I didn't know it was the motherboard issue only got told by the technician onsite) free of charge.

    $1726 for a 5070 if you're after a better GPU for cheaper.

    • That's actually not bad. Shame about the 2*8Gb DIMMs for anyone who wants to upgrade to 32Gb.

  • Wow I would get this but my Intel nuc X15 is still going strong from 3 years ago!

  • Is this on the quiet side when running?

    • +2

There are four difference pre-set mode (quite 0 fan spin to full power fan spin). Pretty sure you can customise it through the alienware app. If you go quiet mode, the fan is basically stop spinning. So it is as quite as a macbook. However when do gaming or other heavy task, the system will auto change it to be performance mode, so it is loud ass.

It does not mean that you cannot bring it to library or else where do gaming, as long as it is not a quite area you are sitting. Others just need to cope with it and put on their noise cancelling headphone (99% people use headphone in public area anyways).

The worst experience for me is like in a library and the system updates occurred, the laptop turned into a launched rocket.

  • Completely out of my depth. I recognise it would depend on needs but if one can afford it would spending an extra 1K to get a 5070ti 32ram and ultra9 275 be worth it on a legion over this?

    • For laptops 5070ti jumps to 12gb vram, everything below that is max 8gb vram. There are certain aaa games that will need more than 8gb vram at 1440p and above already, and especially as time goes on. So unless you know its just for light gaming or only 1080p, and you have the money, yeah go up to 5070ti

    • Oh and im looking for a laptop 5070ti, havent recently seen legion under 3k so hook us up with a deal post if you can! Best ive seen is 3.2k at centrecom, 2.8k hp on ebay sale

  • Ok deal but not excellent.

  • 2.66kg eek, 16 inch with GPU though

  • Why this but not RTX 5070 for $1726?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/943904

    • Guess it depends on priorities…

      Much slower processor (i7-14650HX vs 255HX) - 14650 is 20 to 40% slower
      5060 and 5070 both limited by 8GB VRAM - although the 5070 is 10 to 15% faster

  • Does this have a 2nd m.2 slot to add another SSD?

  • Went and had a look at in store. Looks and feels like a good laptop for the price.

Do not need to change my laptop till after October when my Win10 supports finishes. Not sure to get this or wait till later in the year but never know if prices become more crazy with AI stuff.

    • Windows 10 support finishes this year? I'm not following this and I just checked after reading your comment, web search says Windows 10 was end of life October 2025!?

Also can we just upgrade to windows 11 for free if we already have windows?

    • You can extend your Win10 support for 1 more year.

  • Would this be ok for AutoCad, 3d Modelling, fusion 360 etc?

    Ram upgradeable?

    Thanks
