  • Yup yup better to buy on GoG for DRM free. Instead of Steam and EGS.

    • +1

EGS is the only place to get the remaster legally for PC as they are the publisher, original you have more choice. Original still looks really good on modern hardware but the textures aren't as good.

American Nightmare is a pain though - other than PC it was only ever on Xbox 360 so gog/steam, 360 disc or 360 purchase from Xbox store are the only options, and they all cost significantly more than gog.

Good game the sequel sucked sadly

    • +2

The sequel as in Alan Wake 2 sucks? If anything the sequel is leagues ahead of AW1 in story, graphical fidelity, narrative writing and gameplay mechanics.

The original was a gentle homage to mass market paperback horror which was very popular in the eighties and a lot of the nineties. The second was just a silly meta commentary on general media that was massively overdone. It was also so easy it wasn't really a game more a walking simulator, not really a game. I understand it would seem clever to some people but it's cliche and overwrought to others. I stopped playing at the singing part, maybe it gets good after this.

        • Uh.

Sorry what, AW1 was the walking simulator. The gameplay in AW1 was always pretty rough, and AW2 improved it in every single way

dunno what you are smoking Alan Wake 2 was every bit better than 1

      • To be fair I do smoke a little weed, I remember if being quite creepy and funny and full of Easter eggs about the twilight zone.

    • I hope you dont mean the remake.

    • +3

      Do you mean American Nightmare?

  • Any opinions on original vs remaster?

And.. quality of PC vs switch 2?

    • +1

Can't speak for switch but for PC original is the way to go. Yes it's outdated and cutscenes are low resolution and pre-rendered but the remaster is a lot buggier and just runs worse overall. I always suggest people save their money on the remaster and play the original instead.

      • +1

Remasters should be better quality and not any buggier than their original counterparts

        • I 100% agree. The remaster does have better texture quality and cutscenes but it introduces bugs and issues the original game never had.

One of the biggest problems with it is a flickering bug if you have an AMD CPU which is widely reported and discussed online and whilst there are ways to fix it with LOD bias changes and reducing the refresh rate, the fact you need to even go that far to get it working properly is a drag.

The remaster is also like $30 currently so I'd recommend the original over it.

Edit: This video goes over most of its issues https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNQEM9RtSZc

    • Can't speak to remaster on PC personally but I have seen it streamed with significant bugs - entire screen goes black but opening and closing the menu "fixes it" temporarily.

On Switch I didn't have any issues and it looks nice.
Better textures on switch than the original on PC, but it's not 60 fps either. Maybe it runs at a higher frame rate on Switch 2, not sure.

Original runs super smooth on max settings on any modern PC (requirements back in the day were 512mb graphics memory to give an idea) and still stands up well even now.

The textures are visibly not as nice as the remaster, but also it's $1.79 vs $31 on epic. Epic is the only legal way to get remaster on PC as they are the publisher. No grey market keys either due to DRM that ties it to an epic account.

The remaster is almost entirely graphical - the combat etc is the same and a bit dated. Imo this is a game you play for the story more than for the combat.

  • Does this one have David Bowie?

  • Thumbnail looks like Dirk Nowitzki

  • Amazing game.

Skip American Nightmare though. Even at $1, not worth your time. Trash, copy paste junk.

Keen to play 2 when it's cheaper 😁

    • Ah it's worth a dollar for the nail gun.
