These are Gen 1, really the only way easy to tell is the writing on the tag. Gen 2 has the writing on its face all in upper case. These ones, based on the pictures, have writing in sentence case.

Are these useful to put in your car incase you forgot where you parked your car in a big shopping centre?
A bit, but not much of a help. I have one stick onto my windscreen. It won't be picked up until I'm about 2-3 cars away and I can't hear the beeping unless either the carpark is really quiet, or I see my car already LOL. The signal goes through floor, too. Not sure if that's a good thing or bad thing.
Though given how frequent the AirTag location updates on busy area, having one always better than not.
n.b. you can theoretically hook up a loudspeaker to an AirTag.

Just a reminder that Apple has just released a new generation of AirTags that are better for specific location tracking, updated signal etc. These are the previous generation and shouled become a lot cheaper soon if you can hold off, and otherwise you may want to spend a bit more for the more functional generation.

My gen 2s came in yesterday as well and I’m impressed with the extra distance it can track from. Worth getting it if your phone is 15 or higher for sure
