  • It's annoying this deal is exclusive to the base model. I guess most ppl would choose the long range mid spec model or higher.

    • I agree, I want the dynamic model which has 360 degree camera

      • This isnt't cheap compared to the Dynamic model which this replaced. It's deliberate because you don't need the Premium range and power.

    • It's almost like discounting the one that isn't moving is how they clear stock.

      • but companies never do things like that? lol

    • Better get a Rav 4 Hybird for this price

      • 43k vs 49k drive away, phev vs hev, the spec and reputation difference, and resell value, I don't think it's a clear win here.

        More on the buyer's preference.

    • For this price, either the Rav4 or the Corolla Cross might make more sense. Better fuel economy, bigger engines with more power, better 0-100 figures, a reputable brand and better resale value in future (not saying BYD is bad by any means, just Toyota has the clear edge for reputation & reliability perspectives). Looks are subjective, but some inclusions I think BYD offers a bit more bang for buck (sun roof, 360 camera, leather seats, etc. are standard, I think), but if the engine is gutless, that's a huge drawback.

      • you'd consume no fuel in EV only mode, which is hard to beat. it's a question of whether the reliability and no resell of the toyota is worth the premium, the amount of equipment features and the difference in interior furnishing compared to a bare bone base toyota is night and day, you'd have to go up to at least mid to top spec to match

        • Each to their own, I guess. I can live with mid spec toyota with a better engine than a fancy interior with a gutless engine anyday of the week. The comparison would definitely be in favour of BYD if they could push the 0-100 figure sub 7-second region (which they could have easily achieved given the larger battery the car has got). Corolla Cross mid spec has got 360 camera, leather seats, both front / rear parking sensors and a lot better drive assistance system (only thing it doesn't do is recognising red lights and stop, as far as I know only Tesla FSD does this). The few grands extra you'd pay for Toyota will pay off when it comes to selling the car.

          • @npnp: I don't think you understand the product. the SL6 engine does not drive the car, and will be be quicker and punchier than a Toyota who has the more gutless engine by far. it can also be driven as an EV as well as a hybrid.

I see you've had to compare corolla cross mid spec to make the pricing more comparable - the SL is two size classes bigger so its a much bigger premium.

like I said the trade off is Toyota reliability and resell vs more equipment, better interior and better tech, so yes, each to their own

            • @V2L: Again, no offence, I'm a man of numbers. Purely judging by 0-100 figures, both Corolla Cross and Rav4 are faster than BYD SL6. Conventionally, Toyotas have boring, gutless (but extremely reliable) engines, but in this particular comparison, that 'gutless' crown goes to BYD. It's not all that slow, but having such a massive PHEV battery, one would expect a better 0-100 figure (for example, the Rav4 PHEV has just over 5 seconds 0-100 figure).

              • @npnp: but you are not looking at the actual numbers and it's obvious you haven't driven them. corolla cross is 7.6sec compared to the essentials 8.5. but EV mode's instant torque means it's quicker off the mark where it matters. and that's why I say you don't understand the product, people who comment on the size of BYD's PHEV ICE engine have no idea how they work. Go and test drive one and you will see

and now we are talking Rav4 PHEV? how much is that again? and since when is 5.8sec 'just over 5?' the premium has the sane 0-100 and much cheaper

it's silly enough you are talking 0-100 for a toyota, if that's the only metric you can use to squeeze out an advantage then I rest my case. stick to reliability and resell, it's a valid reason to buy one

                • @V2L: There is no argument that Toyota has a lot more going for it (reliability, resale value) over a brand like BYD (we established that first, didn't we?). For the argument's sake, in this case, 0-100 also goes to Toyota (which actually shows how bad SL6 is in comparison). If a car can't keep up even with a Toyota's 0-100 figures, then I don't know what to talk about that car's 'instant torque' LOL.

A couple of more things I might add for someone who's up for comparison:

                  a) BYD is a quieter car compared to Rav4 and Corolla Cross (BYD insulation is a lot better than Toyota especially on highways)
                  b) Both Rav4 and Corolla Cross are more comfortable & refined over bumps, potholes etc., compared to BYD
                  c) Real-world fuel economy figures of both Toyotas are closer to official fuel economy figures, while BYD figures are quite a bit worse than claimed figures
                  d) SL6 is significantly larger (larger leg room, larger boot etc) than the Corolla Cross and larger than even the Rav4.

                  • @npnp:

For the argument's sake, in this case, 0-100 also goes to Toyota (which actually shows how bad SL6 is in comparison). If a car can't keep up even with a Toyota's 0-100 figures, then I don't know what to talk about that car's 'instant torque' LOL.

do you do much driving? instant torque absolutely matters because you spend most of your driving doing 0-40 and not 0-100, I'm surprised I have to explain this. 8 sec is quick enough on an ICE but will feel more brisk on an ev

                    c) Real-world fuel economy figures of both Toyotas are closer to official fuel economy figures, while BYD figures are quite a bit worse than claimed figures

the most common use case is most people will use EV only mode and not pay for any petrol and use the hybrid mode for occasional long trip. hence making much bigger fuel savings

so again pick toyota if you want solid reliability and resell but SL6 if you want a nicer car and lower cost of running if you can charge

      • After renting a Corolla Cross and then test driving a BYD SL6 Dynamic Extended we immediately crossed the Corolla off the list. The Corolla Cross was underwhelming, from its boxy external design, uninviting generic interior with lots of cheap plastic surfaces, small infotainment screen, lack of low down power to get it up and running from its hybrid engine. We bought the BYD SL6 and it is designed for comfort, although it has a floaty ride its focus is comfort, the leather interior and space is so comfortable and much more appealing, although the FWD version has less power than the AWD version, the instant EV power available is so much better, the back row has so much space but at the slight sacrifice of boot space but its fine. Being a PHEV we have 120km of EV range which is plenty for 2-3 days of urban driving, and even using a granny charger charge for free with solar or overnight at 8c/kwh, the cost saving is huge. With this setup you could use it most of the time as an EV. Then when we took it on a trip to Ballina we started with 1000km of range and were able to achieve 5.2L/100km for that trip without charging the battery and plenty of combined range on our return to Brisbane. Yes BYD has massive questions over reputation and reliability and time will answer that question but for now the value of such a great overall package is undeniable.

  • Do they come with a full charge ?

    • Can I take half charge and pay half price?

      • What a stupid comment. Why not ask for no charge for no price

        • I see you're new to the jv section of ozb

      • upset these poor EV owners,

These have a 60 litre petrol tank.

        • They also have a 2 litre wiper fluid tank.

        • But they have a plug as well

          • @Onemoredeal: So the petrol doesn't leak out…

        • How much is that in kW?

      • It's not an EV. You're about as sharp as your mate.

        • The price probably dropped another $1k while you came up with that

      • they are only a poofteenth of an EV to be realistic…. as a daily commuter it makes sense…but if you don't commute….whyyy?

    • Can someone explain to me where JV was going with this? A full charge would probably only cost a few dollars. What's the issue whether it comes 100% charged or 40% charged?

I am struggling to see this comment from either a funny or practical perspective.

  • Great price for the essential model. Thought price of of 'Premium' & 'Premium Extended' SL6 would have reduced too; as wouldn't it be squeezed by SeaLion7 at 55K price point?

    • SL7 is a different beast being full EV.
But I think the SL6 is being squeezed from below by the new SL5. Whilst the SL5 is technically an older platform from BYD in China, they are both very similar cars in terms of size and specs - and when the top spec SL5 is $41k, you would have to be very particular about styling or some other impractical thing to want to pay so much more for the SL6.

  • again, this had 3k cashback for months just before, so really they've extended it, but worse for novated lease. not negging, just so people are aware this will likely continue for some time in some format, if you're not in a rush, just wait. they'll rebadge the discount some other way.

  • lol just buy an EV

    • These PHEVs are great for people having only one car. EV makes sense as a second car, but not as an only car. With these PHEV you are covered both for daily city commute and once in a while 600km type interstate long drives.

      • What's wrong with EV as only car? Genuine question

  • Totally agree, I keep holding out after each offer because there has been one offer after another for a while now.

    • Seems to be ongoing, the discount.

BYD is fighting very aggressive for marketshare.

  • How reliable are Engines and transmission on these?

    • Great. If you aren't relying on the ICE components of the car

      • If you are buying a PHEV and ICE fails, can you still use it on battery?

        • I'd say so. But if the car is burning probably not a good idea!

          • @serpserpserp: The range would be drastically affected if it was burning

ps. this is actually a decent car. The premium long range one anyways

            • @Broomstick: I'm sure it is nice. I just don't agree with the concept of PHEVs. Particularly ones with "long range" batteries.

              • @serpserpserp: You sound too sensible…. unless talking about daily commute and recharge use

    • Been torn between both brands for a while. Initially was sold on Chery for the price but the name and front design put me off. Also I recon BYD is a good chance of being around for a while, Chery not too confident

      • Chery sold 34889 cars in 2025. They should be around for a while.

        • but Chery can't spell cherry!

        • They've done it before. Sold lots of cars between 2011 and 2015 then left the market and the owners stranded.

          • @ccir: That was 4678 cars sold over 5 years when Chinese cars were not popular, competitive and did not have the same quality and features.

            Not lots of cars

  • I like the BYD new logo - a Chook! or is it a Turkey??

    • BYD's premium brand DENZA has a logo that looks like a travel pillow.

    • definitely a turkey…..

    • Turducken

  • Is this a better option than BYD sealion 7. From a price point of view it looks good.

    • Do you want electric or hybrid? Sealion 7 more performant and fully electric.

    • It's interesting that sealion 6 only edge on sealion 7 is a petrol engine. Everything else, EV has the edge. Your battery cycles are used much less in an EV hence delaying battery degradation, and EVs are super easy to maintain. Then add the FBT exemption. EVs are also more powerful (especially dual motors). For the rare occasion when you go for longer routes (unless you do it daily), you can plan route better.

  • Keeps going lower and lower.

  • This actually does not seem as good as the sealion 5 premium which costs less.

  • PHEV….. Better off going the full hog (sealion 7) rather than lugging around two engines.

    • Keen but the extra price for an EV over a PHEV is what's stopping me and others

      • Depends on your habits, PHEV is a good deal for a lot of people who travel modest distances but a PHEV also has more potential for mechanical complications than an EV, having both petrol engine and EV parts.

I personally think the BYD Atto 2 and Jaecoo J5 are standout deals for pure EV.

        • Electronics of some of the worst brands fail a lot quicker than mechanical parts of some of the reputable brands, so a blanket statement, 'more potential for mechanical complications than an EV' is pointless. I'd bet a mechanical engine of a Corolla would last a lot longer than an average EV, despite having a mechanical engine. Nobody buys a Corolla and worries about 'will this car need to be written off at half a million kms?' but an EV buyer (especially some of the brands), this is a real worry.

          • @npnp: EVs are notoriously reliable, which EVs are unreliable?

As for half a million KMs - most cars are written off by then, but an EV is more likely to get there.

          • @npnp: A Corolla that does 500k KMs by that stage has had most components replaced or effectively reconditioned. It isn't the same car you bought with so much money spent to keep it on the road

        • Agree there. Was looking a a Sealion 5 and 6. And went the smaller J5. Amazing value.

      • Geely EX5 is similar size and great value. Over the air update just introduced android Auto. It's great value.

        • What else did they fix with the OTA? Hopefully easier access to turn off the beeps and bongs

      • There are lots of options at a similar or lower price for EVs like Geely EX5, Xpeng G6 and other options like Chery and even omoda etc. In Urban Australia and the suburbs around 200 km from the city (90% of Australian residents locations), There are no benefits of petrol or Hybrid (plug in or not). Especially at the low prices of electricity. It may be a change and a challenge to charge outside of your home, but EVs become a real OZ Bargain in 2026 😆 pun intended…

        • How long does it take to charge EV at those outdoor stations?

  • this or Geely Starray Inspire? Both PHEV & around $40K

    • Go the Geely, better tech, better interior. Have one.

      • The Geely has Android Auto now, via over the air update..
        Big +++

Get the EX5 full EV. Novated lease gives a good discount if you're on a good wicket.

    • Geely is probably better value with a nicer interior

  • That brown interior kills it for me

  • Hate the concept discount is based on delivery. They could easily delay things and you miss out.

  • Get a sealion 5 instead. Basically same size and cheaper

    • How much smaller is the 5?

      • I saw one yesterday and asper my eyeballs it looks the same size.

        • Drove both. Almost the same size. Less tech and features on Sealion 5 but much more sedate inside.

          • @boxall: Someone said above to consider top spec sealion 5 vs base sealion 6.

            What's your thoughts?

  • Go full EV.

No point lugging around an engine you won't use. (Either electric via not charging, or petrol if you do charge)

  • Only 5 cars left on stock in Melbourne. at the time 1pm 7/2/2026. They sold 4 in the morning, just been there did the test drive, nice car but a little bit bumpier than rav4.

  • No spare tyre = no deal
