I've flown with China Southern before and they are good. The luggage allowance is especially generous.

There's not much to do in Guangzhou airport though for a 5 hour layover. They were still building a lot of stuff 2 years ago. I'm sure it would be a lot better now.

just extend the layover and stay in guangzhou for a day or two. play around w/ dates, pretty easy. you get a free hotel but its ~50mins from city. around $20-25 taxi fare

Airport nothing to do, was there in Dec

Same flown with china southern…good nice service etc clean relatively modern

They still do the free hotel with long layover I think. Was a good deal, nice room and big buffet breakfast. Sharing with a stranger if you don't pay for the extra bed.

  • Hows the safety record? Heard good things about china Southern but still hesitant to try. Usually stick with SIA etc

    • Chinese carrier safety is fine, standard world class airline.

My biggest problem with CS was food was trash, granted wasn't flying from the main GZ hub but rather Shenzhen. Legroom was amazing, and for the price generally cannot complain.

I rate service of CZ better than SQ

How does one check their premium economy prices/ business class prices? I dont see a drop down for anything besides economy.

  • Why no such specials to Athens, checking all the time.

    • Scoot will sort you out.

  • Need September dates

Had really bad experience with CS one time. Another few flights they were ok.
Not that good comparing with the good ones but it’s quite ok when they do discount.
Make sure you check how far you need to commute when transmitting in Guangzhou airport. Ask for help if it’s a problem for you to walk that far. There are 3 terminals now.

  • +2

Guangzhou airport is huge (so is the City itself, Sydney is a baby in comparison), and the distance between terminals can take 10-15 minutes to travel (even more with traffic). Please keep these things in mind when booking. China is an amazing destination, hence, a layover won't do any justice there.

No brainer at these prices if you want to see Europe before it gets too hot or touristy (June is a perfect time to visit). If you have an option to choose between China Southern and Eastern, I would pick Eastern any day though. It might be an unpopular opinion, but both have relatively similar hard products (new A350/B787 planes) and their service offerings are comparable with the cabin crews are generally helpful, but only speaking some very basic English.

I found the passenger base at Eastern a bit more cultured as I had spitting (yep), snoring, loud chewing, armrest etiquette issues in multiple CZ flights. I reckon PVG (Shanghai) in general is a better transiting airport, especially if you have a few hours to burn in between your flights and you want to visit the city. If you are a picky eater, do yourself a favour and buy some food in Maccas or KFC before you board your plane in China, because Chinese catering is a lot different than European or the Aussie and you may not like it. Unless you scan your passport at a kiosk, Wi-fi doesn't work at Guangzhou Airport (lol), so get yourself an esim (and VPN) or a book/ipad with you.

    • +1

Are you saying there were people spitting on the floor of the cabin on your CZ flights?

      • No, they used their cofee/water cup for this purpose. I was lucky enough to see this twice already from someone sitting next to me.

  • Need Sept departure so will keep looking for other options so I can get the rest of my trip moving
