Hi Ozbargainers,

Bit of an interesting concept tonight, if it works I'll list more into the future - If JV comes out punching and everyone starts kicking me while I'm down I might not do it again.

We are getting lots of "failure to collect", "wrong address", "I never ordered this" type returns on our website - so much so the cost of charge backs and refunds and resends is putting pressure on our pricing (we've historically budgeted for 0% buyer fraud, wrong address, lost in post etc) but now its getting more prevalent we might have to add a few percent onto everything we sell to make up for the growing losses.

Anyway - historically when products come back, I generally throw them into a box, take them to the pharmacy and we put them in a clearance bin next to the counter and most of the time we sell most of the product. Fast forward to now where our online sales are well out pacing our actual retail store and the amount of product coming back is literally eating into our store margins (as nearly everything we have in the store can be found in the bargain bin) I need to come up with a better way to clear this product - other than simply chucking it in the bin.

So tonight I have assembled around 600 items which have (either, or, and):

Supplier Box Damage
The product supplier has provided product to us in a damaged box

Spillage or Liquid Damage
The item may have gotten wet during delivery to our store, or another product may have leaked onto the product box causing staining or box damage

Customer Non Collection
This product was shipped to a customer who did not collect the item from the post office after missing a delivery OR our customer refused delivery of the item

Customer Not At This Address
Items returned to us due to our customer not providing a complete or accurate address resulting in the item being returned to us

Underpayment Of Postage
Australia Post deeming the item was underpaid and not following their own procedure of simply delivering the item and adding any postage underpayment to our corporate account, ie. Australia Post has deemed underpayment of postage and simply returned the item to us.

Customer Return
Boxes usually squashed from lots of back and forth postage

          It's true that the placebo effect is very real and maybe it does work for you.
          But also you might as well take Tic Tacs for your symptoms - much better value.

          Patient-reported decongestion was not consistently better for any phenylephrine dose compared with placebo

            @cooni: Cool story but it doesn’t explain why phenylephrine is effective for me. Am I some sort of miracle worker or is it perhaps my specific body chemistry is such that PE is effective? I might be on the outside of the bell curve, but why does that mean you should be suggesting it’s not effective in every person? I’m all for education but please allow other people to make their own minds up.

      99% are returned by Aust post never made it to someone's doorstep.

      Sensease is a customer return, as was a couple of the Minoxidils (now sold) the rest I dont think has been "successfully" delivered

      Metaphor for what this does to our business model - our margin on some items is in the cents and some items a couple of dollars, someone returning a $40-50 item or refusing delivery because they got it cheaper somewhere else really hurts us.

      Thanks - will update now, sadly and ironically letter post speed never recovered after covid,

      1/ stamp price went up allot
      2/ Mail box (street post box) collections went from 5-6pm to 12noon-3pm (so anything posted after noon may sit til next day)
      3/ Mail box collections on Sundays ended permanently and never came back
      4/ Delivery to 99% of homes went to 2 or 3 times per week (previously 5 days per week)

      Overall Australia Post used covid to drop service standards and they never recovered

        yeah true, and similar things for a lot of different industries (e.g. lead times for various bespoke equipment went from a few months to a year and didn't really recover). It was like it was an excuse to reset expectations and cut back resources permanently.

    The "no returns" policy is completely understandable, we would rather your business be protected against malicious actors, even if that means a tony price increase or shipping costs, compared to you having to shut it down. And stuff JV they are a small loser :)

        Out of curiosity, do you get many orders where the address is clearly incorrect or non-existent, which I'm assuming then end up costing you an arm-and-a-leg more in postage and fees? If you do, could it be worth looking at using an address validation service if it's something that'll plug-in to your online store somehow (i.e. if someone enters an address that doesn't appear to exist, it warns them before allowing them to submit the order)? Unfortunately it'd be another cost, but could be one that reduces losses if it stops a chunk of orders from bouncing back / people then seeking refunds or claim backs etc due to their own incompetency.

    Consider adding a tip when making payment on your order. An extra dollar or two won’t make a lot of difference to most people but it adds up for the retailer and helps to ensure we keep seeing great deals like this.

    Pure Australian Honey. We highly recommend for many reasons.
    Ditch all sugar and you will feel so much better overall in your life including less allegic health problems.

    Cetrine is awersome. Before and after mowing the weeds. Less reliance on nasal sprays (last one had a cost of $50) Less reliance on ecenasia. EXPOSURE IS EVERYTHING
    Late 2025 and 2026 running the air conditioning on humid days which is mostly 4-5 days a week. No white powdery mildew or black, red, grey, blue moulds inside. AFTER THE RAIN. NO MORE VISITING THE ED.

Tried to help out but the items I would’ve helped you with (citirizine, loratidine, and cold and flu) happily look like all sold out. Keep up the good work, just go with a non refundable/returns policy moving forward - you have a stable online customer base who won’t care

    Way way back in the day I cleared some old items I had on eBay at $1-$2 including free postage. I listed it as a deal on Ozbargain (as the rep) and probably sold 100-200 instantly.

    Basically giving these things away and customers paid the stamp and eBay fees. I couldn’t believe how many Ozbargain users submitted disputes that the item didn’t arrive/missing/didn’t work (since it was sent via letter/untracked)

    5-10x more than when I didn’t advertise on Ozbargain, it’s unfortunate some in this community take advantage. I assume you’re having a similar issue.

    I'm just curious about all the returns / unclaimed mail. Do you think its because its cheap so they cant be bothered collecting it? Or because australia post is so inaccessible now? I know they closed down all post offices in my area just to open a big one that only opens during business hours. So anything addressed to my address I can basically guarantee i will never receive since im not taking a day off work to collect a $30 thing.

    A great idea with this post - fingers crossed it works out for you… clears the surplus stock and doesn't end up costing you even more. I've always loved your deals especially when it comes to hayfever drugs, and love how you post them flat-packed to save on postage (great idea!).

    Of course there's always (profanity) who ruin things for everyone else (e.g. don't accept delivery of the goods they've ordered, or who pretend it's the wrong address / try returning goods because they've changed their minds), but I also wonder how much of it is due to Australia Post's incompetence e.g. being unable to do their jobs in delivering goods properly, or as you've highlighted returning items to you at greater cost instead of just charging your corporate account extra - although their surcharges and extra fees are also a joke too.

    I wish a political party somewhere would have the balls to say "time to put a wrecking ball through Australia Post, and return it to being about what it's meant to be there to do… deliver goods to people at home / provide a service to people"… instead of what it's become, where people who work standard business hours are generally screwed over by either not being able to receive deliveries at home, and then cannot go pick them up from a Post Office because most aren't open weekends or after business hours - not that people should have to go pick up something from somewhere when you're paying for "delivery". Sorry, I'll end my rant now :)

      Yep, in my area they closed all useful family run post offices and now its only a huge incompetent corporate 9-5 mon-fri one. I try to use parcel lockers but they break half the time and wont open, so functionally, I am now in 2026 unable to use the australian postage system despite living 5km from the CBD. They gladly note my feedback of course! The google maps reviews are about 1 star average, so it isnt just me.

        I'm just ordering things to the parcel locker in the CBD and then bring them home to the suburbs. There are some parcel lockers located inside office buildings which don't see break-ins and work well.

    Why don’t you apply for a credit for the stuff that got damaged from the supplier (box and liquid damage)?
    Also, I’ve always been told that the rule for medicines (anything in a sealed package) cannot be sold again once it leaves the pharmacy due to not being able to guarantee the storage conditions.

      The only way we can achieve many of our prices is to take items on a no return basis from some of our suppliers. We buy at huge discounts and do not benefit from usual consumer protections. None of the meds listed are security sealed items. I understand this deal is not for everyone. I only listed the bad and the ugly some of the items listed simply (for example) fell down the back of shelves and are now not in date code with what’s on our shelves - hence absolutely zero handling by anyone.

    You know Australia Post don't actually have to deliver things? It's in the terms and conditions, they will "do thier best", but are off the hook in actually delivering the damn stuff

    Maybe it is different for us because we live in Fitzroy but Australia Post is the most reliable of the delivery services. We have a free parcel locker with 24/7 access and we’ve never had issues with the technology failing. If we can’t get it delivered to the parcel locker, and we aren’t home for delivery, they drop it off at the sub post office about a block from us. Much better than nightmares like Fastway or CouriersPlease.

    Australia Post is only quasi government now. It is expected to be mostly self funding. The number of letters being sent has dropped off a cliff so most of the revenue is in parcel delivery. With most people a couple of days delay with letter delivery isn’t a biggie.

    Can you sell these when you can no longer guarantee the conditions which they were stored during transit etc?

    Surely when they are delivered from the supplier they are sent in climate controlled deliveries to maintain the correct storage conditions indicated on the box.

      Deliveries do not come in climate controlled trucks etc. Medications which are sensitive to heat (ie fridge pack items) are not included in this listing. Pharmacy products should not be stored in direct sunlight or over about 25-30'C for extended periods are included in this listing, a day or two or five above this temp (within reason) shouldn't have a dramatic effect on efficacy - but please do your own research - I'm not looking to start a keyboard war, but please don't think medicine deliveries to any pharmacy in Australia come via climate controlled trucks/vans (they don't).

      I can guarantee you that despite all medications being required to be below 25 or 30 degrees, the wholesalers deliver them to pharmacies in regular trucks. During hot summer days, stock arrives feeling hot to the touch. I have made reports on multiple occasions about this systematic failure, but "the powers that be" do absolutely nothing to change the industry to mandate proper transport and handling.

    I am a pharmacist and it is illegal for pharmacies to accept customer returns and resell them to other customers.
    This will need to be reported to AHPRA and the pharmacy council.

      Apparently in NSW it is illegal for a pharmacist to re-dispense medicine that has already been dispensed to another patient.

      Different brands, different quantities available, different box condition. I have (had) hundreds and hundreds of boxes, It was a case of average out what I thought I could return quickly - limited math and science involved. If I had to spec and price and list every item individually I'd be working for the next 100 years.
