    Pathetic CPU

Yeah not a fan, should have put a base z2 or even the z2go. the Z2A config is practically a rebadged z1 non extreme

    • +3

nah still sticking with my oled steam deck still way better than this thing.

Second hand OG Ally with the Z1E and a $50 battery mod is much better value if you can get past the RAM limitation. Linux helps.

    Good deal otherwise.

    • Do you happen to have any links to the battery?

      • +7

        https://ebay.us/m/ijbsui

I've just done this mod and installed the beta of SteamOS 3.9.
Picked the Ally up off marketplace last month, came with a 2TB drive for $350.

Much better than the SteamDeck I replaced.

        • Thank you for sharing! How long is your battery life after the mod?

Did you happen to follow a guide that you could share?

          • +2

@safwanc: I get about 7 - 8 hours streaming from my PC with Moonlight or playing anything light through the Ally.

There's plenty of YouTube guides on the battery. Very straight forward.

            https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/65B4-2AA3-5F37-42…

            • @kjb1: off topic, but how do you get the controller to work properly over moonlight? I tried it with my Legion Go and controller mapping was all wacky.

              • +1

@keejoonc: I launch Moonlight through Steam and it just works with the steam controller layout.
Haven't had to do anything special.

                • @kjb1: Only issue is the screen and ergonomics.
The original Ally and new Ally both have great screens, but they're on the small side. Still better than the OG SteamDeck, but I reckon inferior to the SteamDeck OLED and the Lenovo Legion Go 1/2 screens.

In terms of ergonomics, SteamDeck has been unchallenged for years. The only thing that's better is the Ally Xbox and (even better) the PlayStation Portal. The original Ally/X were pretty bad, basically on-par with something like the AYN Odin2/3. The Lenovo Legion Go 1 was barely any better, but the new Go 2 is better but still heaps worse than the SteamDeck for ergonomics.

I guess it is technically possible to fix ergonomics with a 3D Printed Grips case. And it is technically possible to fix screen with Modding. But in a practical sense I would advise against it. Most people are far better served with "just get the SteamDeck OLED" and temper their expectations for battery life (1-4 hours) and performance (PS4 level).

….the Ally Xbox (Z2e) is definitely VERY tempting except for it's screen. It should have been upgraded from a 7.0 to a 8.5 inch size for viewing pleasure, and gladly would've accepted OLED for better sunlight visibility.

                • @kjb1: Thanks. I was running moonlight outside of Steam (I'm on Windows 11). Works fine when I run it from Steam app.

    • Does the battery mod work for Z1 non extreme?

  • +1

Essentially the same as a Steam Deck in performance but the 1080p screen will make it perform worse.

Compared to Steam Deck you lose the OLED screen and Steam OS but you gain a 120Hz display and could install Steam OS yourself.

If you have to buy new, it's a pretty decent deal. Essentially saving $120 compared to the Deck.

    • +5

no oled and no trackpads. Gross.

    • +2

You can still order the 256gb deck lcd at $650 because they still haven't sold out the remaining stock for AU so I'd probably still pick that over this

    • +3

No the chip is crap, but generally better than steam deck

  • This price but Z2E I am in

  • How’s this compared to the original ROG ally z1E?

Biggest annoyances with that was battery life, is this more toward the ROG ally X (or whatever it’s called the newer one)

What’s everyone recommend, purely an FC26etc player and maybe COD or emulation.

I mainly play consoles so I don’t know how much I’m going to notice 120hz etc 😅

    • +2

The z1e is more powerful than this.
I think the only thing this device really has going for it is the ergonomics.
It's probably the weakest windows handheld device available.

      • Any suggestions on a good alternative (ignoring price to an extent, not something stupidly priced)

        • +1

When Costco have the MSI claw ai 7 on sale for $999 is say go for that.
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/941996

          • @maverickjohn: ppl sleeping on the 258v it's a great chip have two of the 8ai+ ..best handheld out now imo even with windows, Excellent battery life. Cant recommend them for people who don't tinker/ or don't have pc gaming experience though.

Fyi Rog Xbox ally has a 60whr battery compared to 40whr in the rog ally, also the rog ally has a design flaw where the SD card reader gets hot and can no longer work.

    • None of these handhelds has the power for 120hz.

You want battery life for fc26, go get a switch 3-6hrs in one charge.

      • +1

Does it do cross platform play with ps5 and Xbox? I’ve always thought of Nintendo systems as being a step in the wrong direction for FC26 but if it has cross play I’d be keen

EDIT: I wasn’t asking for something that does 120hz, I was saying maybe something that isn’t so high in refresh rate might do me better coming from consoles as PC gaming has a really weird affect on my ability to play it feels like a slight disconnect, and I thought maybe it’s because it’s higher graphics and better frame/refresh rates

  • Been reading up on this and it’s not that bad overal compared to the better ROG XBOX X it gets beat easy but it’s half the price too. Seems to get a bad rap but if your comparing the price of the handhelds that beats it, most of them are double when new.

SD is a fair comparison but I’ve read this out performs it by 10-15 FPS just doesn’t have the OLED or trackpads

Dont mind waiting for steam deck 2

  • -1

So why aren't they making the controls detachable like the Switch and putting a kickstand on the tablet? Is it really that hard to do that.

    • it's been done, but with a different brand.

      https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/handheld/legion-go-gen-2/len1…

      • +1

And it’s clunky and a poor handheld as a result.

        • Maybe it's only possible to do it well if you are confident you'll sell at least 50 million of them eventually. The Switch 2 Joycon and attachment method looks space age compared to all these other handhelds. Switch 2 is also very thin and reasonably light for the large size.

          • @AustriaBargain: The switch is like 300g? The legion go 2 is over 900g. Its 3x the weight. Not comparable.

            • -1

@ATangk: Switch 2 is a bit cheaper too. I was a bit unsure of the Switch 2 after buying it, but it stacks up well against PC handhelds imo. Except you can't easily pirate games for it.

              • @AustriaBargain: Switch 2 is not in the same league as these windows devices though.

                • @ATangk: Maybe. But it does have DLSS and a high refresh rate (TN) display, it's kinda close to the league. Other than not being able to run PC games.

                  • -2

@AustriaBargain: I mean if you're happy with the recycled Nintendo games and 1-2 new games a year, more power to you.

I got a switch as a present and it's had maybe 5 hours of playtime, the games on it get boring after an hour or so.

    Just ordered yesterday for $825!
So it's very hard to find anything like a price guarentee, I end up talking to someone in a chat window and they wouldn't refund the difference but can offer it as a voucher if I get back to them 24h after delivery… That will do.

On the device itself…I think it gets a lot of unnecessary criticism tbh.
I don't know what people expect at this price point, yeah it isn't going to run AAA games as well as something which is 1.5-2x the price.

The steam deck is the best comparison, LCD model can be found for less, OLED for more.
Performance is similar but steam deck is limited to steam, I'm a gamepass subscriber so having that library available is very appealing.
Someone replied saying the screen is 1080p so games will run worse, as if you're not allowed to drop the res or something.
I expect to run modern games at 720/900p on low settings, vrr (which steam deck lacks) will also help a lot.
Then I'll be playing less demanding stuff at 1080p.

I get the compromises, I accept that at this price point… I think it's a pretty good deal.

xbox can go and burn with their recent pricing , hope they go bankrupt

    • +2

      Abit harsh.

I'm hoping they thrive and finnaly push M$ to optimise their sh*t for gaming. That and the recent Linux gaming bandwagon.

  • Price now $787

  • I treated myself to an Odin 3. Less powerful than this, but much smaller. I'm hoping I'll actually use it, looking forward to it to arriving.

    • +1

That's a great device and I'd say it's more powerful.
No regrets buddy enjoy your device.
