Portable 720p Projector w/ Built in Speaker $29, 1080p Smart Projector $59 + Del ($0 C&C/ in-Store/ OnePass/ $65 Order) @ Kmart

1060

Kmart have on clearance these cheap projectors that are worth a shot at the price. Realistically they're not going to be amazing and better suited for use in the dark, but plug in a Chromecast and you're good to go. The $59 smart protector is a better buy given it has native 1080p resolution, higher brightness and Android onboard.

Stock is limited (especially for the smart projector) and I recommend going instore or C&C if there's stock, as online orders will likely be cancelled if previous deals have taught us anything.

    or entertaining under the stars

i think i would almost rather just look at the stars - just so i could loudly proclaim 'hows the serenity?'

I recommend going instore if there's stock

actually for once i would recommend c+c so you dont waste your time - i tried 5 times across 3 kmarts to find the $9 etch a sketch for my kid - and on the 5th time i finally gave up and asked the teenage worker and she just said oh yeah, they're probably all stolen but we cant update the system to reflect….fml - anyway got it on amazon the next day for $9 delivered .

Kmart staff can be pretty hopeless at times. They told me they were out of stock of X and there's a whole shelf of them behind the service desk 🙄

      • +37

They're not hopeless, they just don't GAF. Pay peanuts, get indifference.

          • +7

@PainToad: I'm Gen X and didn't know what a Zoomer was until then, but meh.

I learnt skills at Kmart that I use "in my real career" because I'm paid to GAF and measured on it.

At Kmart staff were treated as a necessary evil with conditions and pay to suit, so there's not a lot of "above and beyond"; there's no carrot or stick to entice it.

It's unskilled work that can be done by someone still in high school. That's what the pay suits.

so there's not a lot of "above and beyond"; there's no carrot or stick to entice it.

It's a customer service job. Checking stock when someone asks isn't going "above and beyond". It should be the absolute minimum.

@PainToad: Fair enough, we don't agree.

To you, I sound like a whingy slackarse that should be happy that I have a job and therefore do the bare minimum. To me, you sound like the small business owner that hires interns for under award or free for the "learning experience".

Coincidentally, Kmart were always trying to get me to be a trainee manager, not for my benefit but to save money on wages. I'd become a salaried employee doing 60 hours a week on apprentice money, except there wasn't a formal qualification.

I'm sure the truth is somewhere in the middle.

I'm not some evil monopoly man, never even owned a business. Just someone who is sick of the Gen Z stare from retail workers who can't even force the minimum amount of general courtesy when dealing with customers (or other humans in general).

Was at Ikea the other week. I went up to a worker and asked "Hey mate, could you please point me in the direction of this one <shows product on phone>".

The prick didn't say a word, he literally just pointed. That's it.

Lots of them don't seem to have any social skills at all and think they're better than their jobs (and everyone else).

                • +2

@Big L: You mean that Kmart staff shouldn't check to see if something is in stock when asked? Yikes. How about we just let them use their phones all day and do no work at all.

                  • +1

@Clear: Not paid enough apparently for the strenuous high skilled job of checking stock levels.

                    • +2

@PainToad: Kmart can't get their stock levels correct at their distribution centres, which includes their supply chain software and processes.

What hope has an employee on the floor got when they don't have access to the software? They're going to do the same thing as you, which is walk around to find it, albeit with a better knowledge of the store layout.

Which is what they're paid for. It's not up to some casual worker to decide their work is a lost cause or too hard and simply not try.

                        • @PainToad: Yes, it is up to them. Nothing happens if they don't.

Which is the problem with Australian retail. Lazy pricks who think they're too good for their jobs and too many layers of BS and warning that stops them from getting fired.

                            Thank god for Amazon.

                            • @PainToad: Thank god for Amazon or AliExpress or Temu or Shein or Iconic or eBay or….

I agree, but don't complain when it becomes a oligarchy, and even ColesWorth are on their knees.

                  • @Clear: Kmart staff are assigned different areas and possibly didn't know what you wanted, and were too indifferent or incapable to follow up.

BTW, you walked past the stock to find someone to ask.

It's truely crazy that you're defence for this staff member is they're either too lazy or too stupid to ask a college or manager for assistant for something they can't do.

                      • @PainToad: I don't know how some of them managed to get dressed and to work, let alone find someone an etch-a-sketch. It'd be quicker to train a dog.

I'm the one who chose whether to help based on my hangover, workload (stock picking/ordering/placement), general mood, and particularly customer attitude. There's absolutely no adverse reaction to poor service because compared to the drooling nuffy next to me, I'm still employee of the month.

If you ever worked in retail, you know. If you haven't, you might think they're just lazy, stupid or entitled, but the last two customers were absolute kents and you're getting the poor service. No excuses, just reality.

My young job was hospitality at a bogan all you can eat restaurant. Was much worse than the cruisey close at 9pm retail jobs my friends had.

It was hell. But it taught me to deal with customers.

          • @PainToad: Agree. Any young person viewing a retail assistant job at Kmart as a lifelong career choice needs a good kicking.

              • @PainToad: Investigating tock discrepancies is not something you do with a customer in 30 seconds

                • +1

@Chizzle: TIL "investigating" is punching the SKU into the system to see the stock count.
Nobody expects the service worker to investigate. They just would like to know if the system shows any on hand and which aisle it's in.

Here in Australia the customer is often made to feel like a burden or an annoyance when the overwhelming majority just want a polite and painless interaction as well.

                  • @ezekiel181: I doubt that Kmart floor staff can access the stock on hand, and definitely not where it is - moving stock lines around is a daily occurrence and no software is updated to show for it.

I'm sure everyone on this site is a delight to deal with and always polite, but the advertising campaigns about treating retail staff without abuse or violence might give an inkling to what they put up with.

"pay minimum wage expect minimum effort" is my motto

checking stock level is with in your "minimum effort" you are not paid to stand there and do fk all. Customers are not asking you to go into the warehouse and do a stock take. what a cop out.

You sound like a dole bludger that complain about minimum wage jobs been too hard and then whine about high immigration levels taking local jobs.

              • @Creamsoda: Investigating stock movement and discrepancies is a job for a Stock Controller which pays more than a minimum wage teenager

              • @Creamsoda: Floor staff at Kmart actually aren't there just for customers, there's no chance that they're standing around doing FA. They might not be doing anything well or constructive, but they're not having a chin wag or on their phones - they're putting stock on shelves, refitting displays, ordering, warranties and other tasks.

You sound like an older entitled bloke that is wondering why the worker that walked out the back to check something for you is taking 20 minutes and it always happens to you 😁

The 1080p one appears to be an unbranded magcubic hy320 which can be found on AliExpress and similar for around the sale price.

It's a good projector for the price if you use it in a dark room, I've got two and have been happy.

    • Yup HY320 was my first thought. I've never got around to trying them out. Maybe I should.

Is it Android TV or Android for phones?

      • Only really use the HDMI so not sure, pretty sure it's Android with a launcher because it doesn't look like my Google TV.

    • … with the added advantage of local stock and easy returns (though Kmart, like everyone else, seems to have been tightening the screws on that).

      • -1

Kmart is tightening screws on returns? It's always been really easy in the past.
I've ordered one and hope I can easily return it if I don't like it (60 days for a change on mind return) or if it dies within 1 year (12 month warranty).

    • This kmart one is slightly different to my hy320. Mine has USB / hdmi on back instead of side and i can't tell if this kmart one has the tripod screw underbase. They do seem very similar and I can say that I'm quite happy with the hy320, I paid ~ $99 from temu.

    • +1

This one is good since its the same price so we get it and use it and if we are not happy its easy to return just take it to your local kmart easy

One thing I learned from this guy is that not all HY320's are born the same.

            • @Mikeer: That ain't for head banger, too weak. I would blast with this instead.

              • @Yummy: Is that Japanese thrash metal?

Only problem with that dong is takes too long to start, so it's for squeezing one out, not for a massive blurter.

  • +8

I want to get one of these, but probably will end up in landfill

    • I bought one from Amazon for $60 bucks (the smart kmart equivalent) and its suprisingly good for projection. I use it as a TV in a pinch in the bedroom and it more than suffices for it.

      • +3

        Got a link?

    • +4

Bought a similar cheapie from Big W once. Thought it'd be useless but ended up getting hours of use by a friend who used it for tracing projected images.

Also good as a wall filler during parties

Item unavailable for delivery and click & collect where I am. Has anyone been successful buying this in Sydney?

All unavailable in Sydney. Funny though, you can click for alternatives. But when you select their suggested alternative, that's unavailable too. What a website…

  • I wonder what Android version these things run?

  • Cant find any store with availability around Melbourne

"This popular product has sold out online" for Brisbane

      • Still a few 1080P behind the service desk in Brown Plain Kmart. I guess they were there for ages and possibly the same in other stores.

  • +1

Is anyone still updating the projector spreadsheet that used to get shared around OzB?

  • Hope my CC isn't canceled.

  • +13

I have the 1080p version. Absolute best bang for buck at this price.

It displays well enough on a white wall in my house. Although not super bright, in a dark room it's fine. I ran the gamut of software tweaks/mods and it's actually pretty damn smooth.

Debloated via wireless ADB and have set up Projectivy as the default launcher. Runs Stremio and Smarttube fine. I will be tested Retroarch on it soon for some (most likely) ≤ PS1 emulation. Haven't tested onboard audio as it's usually shit, so plugged into pair of powered Edifiers.

There's very little documentation out there about this thing. The CPU is an Amlogic t950s, which seems to be the most mysterious CPU ever. I was hoping to build a debloated Android 13 for it, but absolute 0 sources or code around. 2gb ram I believe. I tried getting it open, but only got so far as the back part pried but couldn't get the front to split open.

For $59, this is the absolute perfect projector for non-serious viewing like kids brainrot, casual stuff, etc.

    • "Runs Stremio"?? Impressed! I run it on a Fire TV 4K Max plugged to a Happrun F5 projector (paid $90 on Amazon), and it still chokes sometimes (can't get it to play Avatar 3).

    • Would love to know how to do that. Which tutorial/guide you followed. Thanks

    • How many apps did you debloat? Was there much to remove?

    • +2

Since a few people asked, I'll just reply to my post with what I did to debloat:

      • When the system is fully booted, navigate to settings.
      • Set up your wifi connection, note your IP address.
      • Head to "About Projector" at the end of the System Configurations section
      • Click repeatedly on "Android Version". You'll see a small toast pop up mentioning "ADB" and then some chinese writing. You've enable wireless ADB debugging.
      • Note: This projector has software hooks that prevent getting into Android settings easily. For that, you'll need to get into the Google Play Store app and download "Developer Tools" - It's the only app I found that gives access to developer options menu. While in Play Store, download launcher of choice. If not showing up, just install via ADB later on.
      • Once in Developer Tools, navigate to the "System settings" section and then "developer options." From here, you'll navigate down to "Debugging", then to Wireless debugging and enable. Note the port number.
      • Connect to the projector from your computer via wireless ADB. Suggestion: Get the ADB App Control program for your computer and connect through that. It will make debloating infinitely easier.
      • Debloat away! I tried debloating most things that weren't Droidlogic (manufacturer of board) or Android/Google related. Projector didn't like that I got rid of all the other janky crap and it borked it all up and needed to be exchanged. So I did a light debloat of things that didn't seem pertinent at all by checking what processes were running via ADB App Control.

I installed Stremio, Smarttube, Browser, tvQuickActions Pro (limited ADB access), I tried installing the ADB AppControl app but connecting to internal adb is hard blocked.

Some ADB settings either won't change or won't stick. YMMV.

If you mess up, there is a way to get into recovery via "adb reboot recovery" but it's limited in what you can do anyway. I didn't have luck "restoring" to factory default. Booting into bootloader gets stuck. You can get into fastboot, but for the life of me I couldn't get USB connection to my computer. I tried a purchased USB-A to USB-A cord, as well as a homemade one but no luck. Seems USB output isn't working, hence why I tried getting the thing open to see if I could get direct access from the board. I cannot find any sources or any relevant software for this thing, so kinda stuck for now.

      • While in Play Store, download launcher of choice.

        ATV?

        • Sure, would probably work. Don't see why it wouldn't. My Projectivy persists after reboot - the main launcher/desktop loads then Projectivy takes over.

Can't edit the comment above, but I erroneously mentioned clicking on the Android Version to enable wireless adb when it actually enables wired ADB, my bad. But seems useless as USB connection doesn't register with a PC anyway.

          • +1

@w33w00: Right! Now I noticed you mentioned it in the beginning. I have ATV set up on my Fire TV — will give Projectivy a go.

      • +1

Just to confirm… you debloated and bricked the projector?
        Yikes….
Ok maybe I'll just stick with a Firestick.

        • It was user error on my part, I just went too far. Don't let that discourage you! But do what you feel works best for you. :)

Edit: I didn't brick the projector to be clear. I just got it into a state that wasn't best use case for me and recovery is dodgy on it, so didn't see a point proceeding further down the rabbit hole with that particular unit.

  • 30$ projector , ok ok ok

  • Sorry silly question, can this be used as a projector for visuals/design by connecting to a laptop instead of using the UI for streaming services?

    • Yes

      • OOS now sadly but thank you

  • I'd rather watch paint dry. But I'm tempted to buy. Must resist.

  • 720p would be good for an Xbox 360 or PS3 console

    • +3

The input lag on these projectors is probably 100+ms

      • Lols prolly not then 🤣

  • +1

We got the previous model smart projector and it's great to project onto the ceiling in the bedroom. I watch the winter olympics well into the night.

    • Works great in a dark room don't expect much in any room with light.
    • Sound is terrible and has a noticable lag on bluetooth, a wired speaker is going to be the best solution for better sound.
  • SA - This popular item has sold out online and no stock

  • I would strongly suggest one of these… for the price I was REALLY impressed. https://www.temu.com/au/hy300pro-portable-native-720p-suppor…

There are dozens of sellers on Temu… find your own cheapest one :)
