WHAT?? Is this really you? So good to have you back buddy! Hope you've been well 🤗

Time to meetup in Chatswood like the old days :)

  • Can you I have a layover in Sanya for a few days?

    • +1

Sanya is not far from Haikou, with the fast train, so it's easily done, if you can get your flight timings.

I flew Hainan from Tokyo back to Melbourne in November and it was the worst flight I've ever had. The plane was filthy, they missed special meal requests, the international section of their hub airport was tiny and most of it was under construction. I've flown Air China before and that was significantly better.

    • -1

Really? Hainan is meant to be one of the better airlines.

      • airline is great but airport is suck.

      • My ranking would be
        Cathay Pacific / Singapore >
Air China / China Eastern / China Southern >
Hainan Air / Sichuan Air >
        Jetstar / Scoot

        • +1

Cathay higher than Singapore? I would have pegged Singapore higher given their airport is better and their soft products as well.

    • yes Hainan airport is upgrading. That is annoying to stay inside the airport.

    • -1

R u sure the plane itself is filthy? Hainan rated pretty decent

      • It was as though it hadn't been cleaned for multiple previous flights. It turns out that Skytrax ratings aren't very reliable.

        • +1

          They pay for those ratings

      • +2

        Very old A330 planes

(My experience based on flights from Melbourne)

Their "soft product" service is somewhat better than the other Chinese carriers - menus distributed ahead of meal service, hot refresher towel service, etc. -but Hainan Airlines runs significantly older planes than China Southern, China Eastern, and Air China (although Air China does occasionally fly older aircraft to Australia as well, and China Eastern's smaller routes like the flight from Melbourne to Nanjing do use older aircraft too), meaning older entertainment systems, more problems with seats not staying in place, older style overhead storage locker designs, etc. The overwhelming use of the red and yellow colour palette doesn't do it any favours either, as the initial impression upon boarding is that you've walked into an 1980s maccas themed plane. Soft product superiority when hard product is equal is what makes an airline great. When the hard product is poor, soft product superiority only serves to compensate.

Airport wise, Haikou's domestic part of the terminal is actually pretty good, though my experience is that they are stingy with the air con, which makes it somewhat uncomfortable for most of the year due to humidity. The international part of the terminal is tiny and once you're through immigration, there really isn't anything to do at all other than wait for the flight.

Having said all of this, at the prices we get for these flights, there really shouldn't be much grounds for complaining I think! I would very happily take any of the Chinese carriers ahead of the low cost carriers.

    • I travelled with em no issues. Got unlucky.

    Do they serve chicken rice?

    • +1

You can eat as much, at the destination.

    • +1

      in airport, yes

Vietjet has HKT return for $570, realistically as cheap as it will get.

  • Anyone used trip.com before? Is it trustworthy and reliable?
I’ve heard horror stories about 3rd party companies.

    • Nah they're good. I used them during a recent Shopback promo and they're about as good as Expedia and co

    • +1

They're good and is used practically by everyone in China (Ctrip). Better than Booking.com and Agoda in my experience. If you are going to China you'll book practically everything with Trip as hotels and attractions don't show up on other platforms.

    • +1

You basically have to use them for everything in China. Nothing there has a proper website, it's all through apps. Even with some airlines their website is so broken you literally can't pay as it just loads forever, so trip.com is required for them.

Haven't had any problems myself with ~5 hotel bookings with friends and a few bullet train tickets.

I'd say just make sure your name is exactly the same as on your passport, including any middle names, so there are no technicalities that cause issues with your bookings.

    • Their website/app is so 'busy' to look at - it's almost like a sensory overload, but it does the same thing as Expedia/Booking.com. It's Chinese owned so the platform probably has a good relationship with the Chinese airlines if that gives you any comfort.

    • Used them many times and love the app, its features and flight updates within - they will tell you about flight changes, gate departure and delays as well.

  • Flew with Hainan last year from Kunming to Sydney. Was fine.

  • $400 to go to Brother Zhang’s to get my RTX 4080 upgraded to 32GB?

  • Trip.com has thier own ESim and best deal you get for Asia ESim something like $4 for a week

  • Skytrack last review was done sometime in 2017. Better you send your updated review to reflect the current status of the airline.

  • Hainan is definitely the worst chinese airline I've flown with, similar to another person in this thread the planes were absolutely filthy and the food was like dog food. The grime was baked into the tv, seat handles and the floor. My flight back got delayed twice and they don't have any codeshare so if you need to be back by a certain date you can't reroute onto an alternative airline.

It was also a debacle at the airport as they mixed up everyone's bags and were trying to manually hand sort them for customs. We were held in a holding pen for almost 3 hours (at 3am in the morning!) until some Chinese people started arguing with airline staff that we were going to miss our connection to Beijing and they finally let us out. Avoid at all costs, the Skytrax rating is absolute BS and 100% paid for.

  • Has anybody changed passport info with hainan airlines before? My old one expired and I won't get the new one till next week. And trip.com won't let you proceed unless passport information provided. Any chance to book with old one and update it later?
