In addition to funding Alan Wake, 2 Epic Games funded Alan Wake Remastered through its publishing label, Epic Games Publishing.

As part of a two-game partnership with Remedy Entertainment, Epic provided full development and marketing funding for the remaster.

If Epic didn't fund them these two games wouldn't exist. It's like asking Valve to put Half-Life 2 Anniversary onto Epic Launcher.

I generally agree wholeheartedly, however I can't emphasise enough just how much Valve has done for open source software, which ironically helps break Microsoft's monopoly.

They have hard carried gaming on Linux and all the other stores are free to use the translation code (eg. GOG is building a Linux store that will almost certainly leverage Valve's Proton. You can play (most) games from Epic, GoG, Uplay, EA etc on Linux thanks to Valve). Recently they have been funding and pushing translation layers for running PC games on ARM. They've even made huge contributions to AMD and Intel drivers.

        • I think around the time of Half-Life 2 Lost Coast they did a lot of work with NVIDIA and one of the Left4Dead games was used to assist Intel with making their video drivers better.

          • @Agret: Yeah, the difference now is they they are heavily funding and contributing open-source code, so everyone benefits (eg. there is lots of shared code for the AMD and Intel Mesa graphics drivers, from what I understand).

            • @Erwark: Valve also going hard on funding open source x86 to ARM translation layer for Linux

              • @Agret: Yep, I did mention that. Good stuff.

    • Dont bother, not much worthy improvements. And the new Alan kinda looks weird compared to old one, not sure why they changed the main character's face. After seeing the video and reading the comments on youtube, they made the game slightly more detailed, but the enviroment/lighting in the old one looked better.

Looks worth it just for the HD textures, at least for anyone that has missed out on playing this awesome game.

  • I have both versions. Got this for free with AW2 and already owned the Steam version.

The original is still very much playable and in some cases has a better atmosphere that the remastered edition missed to capture. But if starting from scratch, remastered is probably the way to go.

  • For those considering this on Mac - buy this version and not the non-remastered version.

I recently bought the OG version of Alan Wake from GOG for $1.79 and it was unplayable via VMware Fusion or Crossover on a M4 Mac. I then purchased this version (for $6.74 via Humble Bundle) and it ran flawlessly on my Mac via Crossover that I haven't bothered even testing via VMware.
