Anything around the $200 mark atm? Looking for a phone for my nephew.

    • Plenty of Moto G deals around here for that price

Hard to beat this one, I got recently. Been using the phone and while the screen is a bit underwhelming coming from samsung AMOLED, I'd be such a greedy bastard to expect anything more at this price!

      • Pretty nice deal but yeah out of stock anywhere close here

    • +1

Used to be Xiaomi and other Chinese phones nearly a decade ago, with tons of deals on ozbargain

      Good times

    • You can get a poco m7 for that if you import from China through AliExpress, it's only truly nice feature is the battery everything else is just passable but it gets the job done.

      • +1

Isn't that banned from the triple zero calls on certain networks in Australia?

        • It's an international model and seems to support Australia standards fine although I haven't had to try 000 my other calls work fine with Vodafone network

  • +2

No esim in any of them?

    • +2

I think the pro plus has esim but deal breaker for me is no wireless charging.

      • has that improved? I tried a while ago and the thick cases I have for it usually prevented it but this is going back to s8 days.

    • The REDMI Note 15 Pro does + the REDMI Note 15 Pro+

    • You can get an esim adapater/sim card for ~$20.

  • +2

    This (15pro or pro+) or pixel 9a?

    • also interested in this

    • -4

      Pixel, duh??

      • Because…?

        • -6

Ask anyone outside the ozbargain bubble…

Stock android from a reputable (arguable now) company, vs a phone that no one's heard of from china.

(And yes, iPhones are made in china blah blah, you know what I mean)

    • -3

Basically how much you value your privacy. Xiaomi with possible spyware and google vs pixel 9a with GrapheneOS

  • -2

REDMI Note 15 Pro+ Plus is ok but looks like a downgrade from my s23+

    • +3

The s23+ is a flagship Samsung

      • -1

        From 3 years ago.

        • +1

Not much difference from Samsung flagships last year………….

How does Redmi Note 15 Pro+ compare to Pixel 9?

    • I switched from a poco f5 to a pixel 9 pro xl in Nov last year. Seriously thinking of getting this. Really dislike the pixels extra weight, finger print reader, and color tone of the pixel phone.

The camera in the pixel is great, and I love wireless charging, but the OS just seems like it's built babies. Everything is on guard rails. Constant 'would you like to try this feature. It always tells me' remove your phone from wireless charging to improve performance, even when it's under 20%. The giant curves on the corners of the screen also cut off corner buttons in some apps which is annoying.

Speed wise I can't tell the difference between the smapdragan 7 VS 8.

The note 15 pro has a slightly bigger screen which would be a plus for me, but a minus for some.

  • +3

    Any with 3.5mm jack?

  • Has anyone moved from an oppo find x2 pro to one of these? I'm always tempted by the redmi phones but I keep chickening out.

    • Yeah interested in this comparison as well. Find X5's screen just started packing up.

      • +2

If it's green lines IIRC you can get them replaced for free at OPPO service centers.

        • +1

Yeah green vertical lines up the screen. Been driving me nuts. Service centre is across town but if it's free I'll check it out.

          • +1

            @RonnieMcDronnie: Don't bother
I went to the one in Crestmead. They told me they weren't aware of any green line issue, that if it's out of warranty they charge a $99 inspection fee and that they only use genuine parts that they don't stock and takes about 2 months to ship in.
They also said if there's ANY physical damage your warranty is void (p sure this is against ACL but w/e).
Google also says genuine replacement costs are around $700 so….
Your local might be better but yer.

            • @User341494: Yeah I will double check the travel time before I commit, might be easier just to stray off the oppo all together and avoid in future. I did call up before the warranty period ended originally. So might be able to quote the ticket number to avoid the check charge.

  • Would the cameras on these ever compare to something like the iPhone camera? That's been my primary issue with these Chinese phones, the camera always seems to suck.

    • +3

Got nothing to do with Chinese phones, and everything to do with comparing a $1500+ handset to a ~$500 one.
Having said that, a Pixel 9A will definitely compare and in many cases beat an iPhone camera, but you'll lose out on SoC performance and battery life.

Depends what you're prepared to give up for the additional $1000 in your pocket. If you're unwilling to give up anything, then its an irrelevant question.

      • Fair enough. I LOVED my Redmi Note 10 Pro before I got an iPhone. The only complaint I had was the camera.

I guess my question is, are there any Chinese phones with good cameras (since I assume a Pixel 9A would carry an additional premium)?

        • Pixel 9A can be had in the $5x0 range

    • The photos taken in my Redmi note 13 pro+ were better than the Iphone XR.
But after 6 years of evolution.

    • +2

Xiaomi flagship phones take better photos than the big 3 right now (Apple, Samsung and Google). Most Chinese smartphones have outpaced the big 3 for a while now in photography. Apple is still the best with video though.

Some of that might translate into their budget and midrange phones.

I'd recommend looking at some camera comparison videos on YouTube.

XxxMi similar like Kogan, none of their products manufacture direct by their own factories, they just OEM by third party, so, if you can find the original factories and purchase from them, the quality will be better hence they hold their own manufacture and know how to repair and easier for warranty claim.

    • +2

Do you know any OEMS who sell as you mentioned?

  • +1

PSA, just make sure you check the IMEI / TAC on the websites before you buy, to see they won't get blocked by your carrier, due to no emergency calling.

    https://isthisphoneblocked.net.au/

    and

    https://www.telstrawholesale.com.au/3G-Network-Closure-Block…

I checked my year old Poco X6 Pro 5T when I bought it, and it passed. Now Optus says it fails, and kicking me off network start of next month.

Interestingly, Telstra says it will work on theirs. So I'm going to swap my current Amaysim (Optus) SIM out for a Telstra MVNO and see what happens, before I lash out on a new phone.

Xiaomi sells these models officially in Australia. They are not grey imports like the Poco X6 Pro

    • Everytime I put in coupon it says "something went wrong with your request. Please try again later" and then it sends me an sms which says "Mastercard: 863027 is your Click to Pay verification code. Do not share this code with anyone." Etc

  • Don't forget 3% topcashback (not sure if it works but my brief reading of the t&c seems like it will work since we're using coupon, not voucher)

    Thanks OP
I previously came from redmi 3s prime, mi mix 2, galaxy zflip3, and now this phone (Redmi note 15 5g)
    I was considering
    * Pixel 9a - 7 years security
    * Nothing 3a - 6 years security
    * Redmi note 15 5g - 6 years security
    * Motorola Fusion 60 - only 3-4 years support :(

I also though to lineageOS opportunities so that the phones can still have a useful life for scrolling youtube in bed, adfree. my other two xiaomi's are on lineageos 22/23 :D

    • Did you manage to unlock the bootloader on your Xiaomi / Redmi? I was previously able to unlock the Redmi Note 11, but haven't been able to unlock the Redmi Note 13.

      • I unlocked my bootloader's in 2014 (unlimited) and 2019~ (2 devices per year) respectively. I heard xiaomi has made it quite a bit harder now. I wanted to use lineageos again, but banking apps won't pass securitynet anymore and using web browser requires 2fa via the mobile app.
        (Commbank and hsbc)

So just using lineage for my n-1 phone to browse in bed

  • Do these phones work with Android Auto? Do they have e-sim?

    • Yes official AU stock phones will have Android Auto. For esim check specs, some models do.

I have a Galaxy A73 that's getting tired. Was going to see what the S25+ might drop to after the S26 line drops, but these Redmi phones look interesting. Would you consider them as an A73 equivalent if Samsung still had that line?

  • i got the Xiaomi Redmi 15 5G Dual Sim 8GB Ram 256GB Black (International Ver) from Kogan last week $293 (with Kogan first member* trial 14 days free)

  • is the redmi note 15 worth the extra dollar than redmi note 14? aside from extended software support, is there any major difference between the both?

  • Snapdragon vs a non-Dimensity MediaTek SoC I think is a major difference

    • difference in terms of performance? would a normal user notice this? if you mainly use it for watching youtube, browsing, whatsapp and occasional gaming.

      • +1

Probably not too noticeable today, but as Upgrades roll around, a more potent SoC will become more noticeable.

However, you get a bigger (and Silicon Carbon technology) battery and better SoC efficiency (4nm vs 6nm process), giving the 15 measurably better battery life, therefore less battery wear over time, plus the Silicon-Carbon tech should have better battery wear characteristics over the older LiPo tech in the 14.

Personally I think the additional software longevity is worth the $40 difference alone.
14 gets only 2 Android Upgrades, 15 gets 4 Android Upgrades, but the 14 is already a year old, effectively losing 1 year of support sitting on the shelf. therefore the 15 carries ~3 additional years of support.

  • Thanks champ! that was very helpful.

  • Would personally skip this generation, rebagded note 14 with weaker chipset, UFS 2.1 across the board, Note 13 Pro and Pro + had UFS 3.2 IIRC, only thing good about these series is their really durable, and also the chip efficiency/battery upgrades.

    • Are you saying Note 13 Pro and 13 Pro+ are just the same as the 15, more or less?

      • +1

I'm saying the Note 14 Pro and Pro + are the same as the 15 more or less, and that the Note 13 series is actually better due to having UFS 3.2/3.1
