The website even still uses frames!

The car with the blades that come out the side was sick!

Yep, now this is a game.

Over two decades later I still feel slightly guilty for renting the game from Civic Video and replacing the working CD key with a keygenned one that only worked offline.

I was one of the victims…you could donate a large sum to me alleviate your guilt

Wow I literally just installed UT2004 and all the patches the other day! Still one of the best multiplayer FPS games of all time.

A friend of mine is currently setting up a server based in Sydney for those Aussies who want to play online.

      What a hero!

  • +1

Great memories. First ever online FPS I ever played!

For anyone interested in UT2K4, check out your local DADLAN.

If you can't physically make it to one, you will most likely be able to connect to the same server from home.

    • I think that one is password protected. Any clues as to where to find the password?

      • +3

I hate to say it, but join the Discord.

FWIW I believe there is a free, fan made remake/rehosting/rewhatever coming to the actual Epic store within the next few months with full online support etc. Not made by Epic at all but I believe has their endorsement.

Glad its free, More games that are this old she be this way.

Got an entire bedroom full of old PC and console games in original packaging that is just eating up so much space. Would love to convert them all to digital. But everything digital wants an account with no garuntees you'll have even have access.

    • +2

Rip them all to .bin files and give me all your media?

    • +1

Storage space is a challenge, but somehow there always seems to be room for one more.

  • +3

    ULTRA KILL!

  • +2

Man if this gets a MacOS release I will be stoked!

  • +1

    Unreal deal!!

  • +1

Such a good game. Facing worlds FTW

One of the best games ever.

There's an Australian server called "Bellum Community" that is set up with custom Onslaught and CTF maps (with vehicles). It's also got modernised and updated versions of the classic maps. Think ONS-Torlan, but with new vehicles that weren't there in the stock game.

If we could get enough people to start playing in the evenings, we could recreate the community from back in the day. Anyone remember playing on servers run by Wireplay, Telstra GameArena, Internode and iiNet? When the last of these servers shut down, the community died. Let's rebuild it again!

  • +3

Tonight we played a couple of "new" maps and some classics like Arctic Stronghold and Torlan. Thanks to everyone who joined and hope to play again soon!

If this sounds like your kind of thing, you’re more than welcome to be part of it. There are two ways to connect:-
    1. Open the the in-game server browser, select 'Onslaught' as the game type, then double-click on the Bellum server, or
    2. Click the button at https://bellum.mywire.org.

Hop in and relive the glory days, when our reflexes were sharp and our responsibilities were… optional!

My friends and I still play this regularly on multiplayer using workarounds (like ZeroTier) and copied files from the early 2000s (and subsequent anti-virus scans) Thanks OP!

@yet I may join you all on friday night/the weekend!

  • +1

Finally! I have been waiting for UT2004 to make some sort of revival.

  • will this run on the tiny PCs who’s deals are posted often on ozb ?

    • +2

yes. It runs fine on PCs with integrated graphics, although you may need to turn down some of the graphical details depending on how powerful your machine is.

      • +2

Worse case scenario, if the micro PC doesn't have a good enough graphics chipset, one would need to use the software renderer.

    • +2

      Should be fine

I used to play UT04 and UT3 on a Intel GMA 950 with just 4gb of ram (shared).

settings were low/mids at 1366x766 resolution

  • Need to see if I can find the old invasion mod files and get an rpg invasion server up and running

  • +1

Ah the memories. I still prefer UT99 but can't complain, and it worked great on the computer room PCs at school which were conveniently networked!

I wonder whatever happened to that 'new' UT which came out in alpha/beta at some point…

    • +3

      That new UT got canned.

The whole premise for that title was that it would be community led and fostered but the idea was flawed:

      1. With the old UT games, you at least had a solid foundation for which the community to build on. This one was quite bare bones and definitely not anything that would pass for a retail release.
      2. Mapping and modding in the past was doable as a passtime due to how little detail maps/models etc were. These days, there's so much detail making it longer between releases, you don't get the volume of content released frequently enough to satisfy the community's appetite.

Of course, when Fortnite took off Epic focused all their efforts there.

TBH, I'm kinda happy where we are… both UT99 and UT2004 are freeware games and there's enough community support to keep the games patched to work on current hardware/OS, and keep servers running.

      • Epic only cares about Fortnight. Even Rocet League is being side lined and they are hopinh it will die and the players just join fortnite.

        • Much like what happened to Paragon too.

As long as the kiddies keep playing Fortnite, Epic ain't gonna try making anything else.

Games industry is in a pretty sad state compared to what it used to be.
