I just know the tiggo’s self park feature is a gimmick

It is so good

170km range lmao

@King Steuart: It's a hybrid, its not meant to have huge EV range but the 170km range is also on the NEDC so probably more like 100-120kms in reality. Would still do well over 1000kms on a full tank of petrol and battery

@whitelie: Is there any problems with these hybrid cars if you only use the battery component of it rather than the fuel?

@nightelves: Ideally you'd run the petrol engine once in a while to keep things lubed up and ticking over but plenty of Shark owners using full EV on the daily commute and only going through a tank of fuel every couple of months. In terms of battery degradation, I couldn't say but it would be covered under the warranty if it loses capacity too quickly

@nightelves: Outlander PHEV forces you to refill 20 litres of fuel every 3 months to keep that component in order and fuel from going stale.

@nightelves: I was just at the BYD dealership and the guy at the dealership claimed you could run their PHEVS for a few months without refueling but you cant do it the other way around. Obviously check this is true before purchasing.

@King Steuart: Different category of vehicle or the NEDC way of testing? Not sure what you're talking about

@whitelie: Wait sealions are PHEVing shit too
I was going to argue you can't compare features when the byd has a massive f off battery in it but disregard, friend

@King Steuart: Sealion 7 is EV, the rest are PHEV.
To me PHEV is the perfect compromise. I usually drive about 60km round trip to work each day so can run full EV but enough range with the petrol motor that I can take it longer distances without having range anxiety

@CRCinAU: My point was they're completely different cars.
A smart fortwo is probably going to take much less than 60L to cover 1000kms, doesn't mean it's comparable to these things
@whitelie: Yeah, but also in claiming 7 "people", the word "people" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there…
PHEV really is just combining the worst parts of ICE and EV technologies together and getting the result of that.
Either way, if your priority is popping out kids so you can use all 7 seats, fuel economy probably isn't your sticking point…

@CRCinAU: Comments like these crack me up so hard. How can plugless hybrids come close, both in distance and power for size and weight equivalent. Wheres the toyota phev gone if their plugless ones are supposedly so good? Im not saying the chinese cars are good, but they smoke a camry in most categories.

@H8Pootin: My whole point - that might not have been completely obvious - is that the EV side of it doesn't really add a ton of benefit. It adds some benefits (while adding more downsides) but as far as the "EV benefit", it gets about the same range as a 10+ year old non plugin hybrid.
Yes, its a bigger, uglier vehicle - but its not exactly an efficiency powerhouse because its a PHEV.
If you want to flip it the other way, the PHEV 'benefit' is to get a bigger, uglier vehicle for the same fuel economy as a 12 year old Camry.
EDIT: For clarity, I sold my 2012 Camry Hybrid for a Sealion 7 - and the SL7 is waaaaaay nicer than the Camry - without the shackles of an ICE engine.

@King Steuart: To avoid confusion, there are several BYD models with ‘Sealion’ in the name.
Of those, only the Sealion 7 is full EV, at this point.

@andresampras: The naming is pretty annoying. Why not keep the Atto range as EV and the Sealion range as hybrid?

Tesla's don't even come with chargers.

But they can drive themselves to a charger
…but they can't plug in once there.

80k? Where the hell are you buying from?

Byd hell?

So you are paying 80k for a 33k sealion 5? Or are you paying it for the 60k sealion 8?

@Zeee: And? How does linking to a pruce significantly less than your 80k prove your point? Obviously money jus doesnt mean much to you so i can see why anything free is just not important

@gromit: The top spec Sealion 8 is pretty darn close to 80k DA especially if you want any colour other than white

@whitelie: Technically correct. I can get the top spec to $80,066 drive away by adding on the more expensive paint, ceramic window tint, dashcam, ceramic coating and interior protection treatment. Those extras are all blatant rip offs that no sane person should buy through the dealer but the point remains that $80k is possible.

@whitelie: only possible for someone that has complete disregard for cost, so to then complain about a free charger seems completely disingenuous.

What's the price?

So does Australia. We're supplying them with iron ore, coal & gas etc.

Australia is a part of Asia as I see the Australian team on the PhysicalAsia Netflix show!

Ford has ties to the US military, and just wait until you find out about Volkswagen

I would argue the pedo cabal is probably the most evil organisation

Very evil but the CCP has probably murdered around 80m people and continue to oppress and silence their own population but especially their minorities and anyone who opposes their rule. So just slightly more evil

Antisemitism detected!
Jill Stein disapproves of your post!

Your job probably relies on China buying our stuff. Grow up.

US should concerns about how their people survive after USAID shutted up

This is like buying a house and getting a free key.
Chargers are like $500, it's not expensive. Also I don't think it includes installation cost which could be high depending on your cable run to the switchboard.

Just need a free home for my free charger.

Or it’s like buying a new car and getting a full tank of petrol thrown in. Which is nothing but still something.

Well people renting or already have a charger installed won't benefit much from that.
Rather have a $500 eevie voucher

Agreed; a good deal would be free charger with free standard installation.
Giving you a wall box that you're not going to find a sparky to install for a reasonable price is not a deal.

Yet new iPhones don't even come with chargers and they're thinking of removing the cables…

Waiting for BYD Tang

does it mix well with water?

It does. Build Your Drink.

Sealion 8 is BYD tang, is it not?

The BYD Tang is the Atto 8

They’ll try charging you $1000 to install the free charger.

Whats your point? Isn’t the average installation cost about $1000-$2000 by an electrician for an ev charger?
I suppose it depends on single-phase vs three-phase

Byd 8 is pretty good car but thw 3rd row is very tight.

Did you slide the middle row forward a bit? More room than competitors in this segment

Na, I did not try that thing.

the 3rd row is unmanageable. worse design ever.would wait till Gen 2

What's wrong with the design?

Can't fit his fat ass.

This is standard 7 seater at Shanghai (AKA spaces just for luggages), unmanageable 3rd row. I feel like all EV cars here are scam lol after experiencing Didi Luxe cars over there, not to mention how cheap.

Cool. Why don't you live there then?

Purchase a BYD Sealion 5 or Sealion 8 and Receive a Free Home
Charger@ BYD AutomotiveWouldn't THAT be lovley? 😝

The charger is cursed….
But comes in your choice of colour!

Can't say I have good experience with BYD Australia.
I own a BYD Seal since 2023. Love the car. But BYD's support is the worst in Australia. Once you get the car, you are on your own. They increased the servicing cost by 100% in last 2 years. If you even ask them to look into issues to claim warranty outside of servicing window, they will charge $300 just to inspect the issue.

Sounds kind of standard for premium vehicles, my passat was similar. I will monitor though. Only novated leasing my byd so if they're dodgy in 3-4 years I will show no loyalty 🤪

Same dude. I don't think I will buy another car from them if the support doesn't improve soon. The best service I got was on the day I took delivery of the car in Dec 2023. Back then they weren't selling too many cars so they were good with customers. Now they are cocky as there PHEVs took off and selling like hotcakes.

Is BYD consider a premium vehicles?

Same price as VW passat, premium golfs, tiguans etc, so yes, over Holden, Ford, Mazda, Hyundai, etc.
Especially Ford Rangers. Fight me.

Isn’t the BYD 6 year servicing price locked in when you purchase the vehicle?

I got my car in Dec 2023, when EV Direct was providing servicing for the vehicles. I believe that in late 2024 or early 2025, BYD took over the entire business in Australia, and that’s when the costs increased. For example, the 40k km service was listed as $330 when I purchased the car in Dec 2023. However, when I had the 40k km service done in October 2025, the cost was $545.
I also had an issue with the cup holders and asked them to look into it. They told me that the inspection would cost $300, and if the issue was caused by me, the repair cost would be additional.
The car hasn’t had any major issues, as it is still relatively new, but their support staff have been very disappointing. Even the attitude at their servicing centre has not been good.

I was at mycar last year doing the annual 50% pirelli ozbargain visit. There was a guy with a BYD for service with a ton of problems. The guy was like "can't help you with the car we just do the service. Take it to BYD for all that sutff". Seems like the ultimate setup for the runaround.

I am interested in seal 5 now I am worried.

You will definitely love the car. But I just haven’t had a good experience with their support so far. I tried three service centres in Sydney, and they were competing with each other on who could be the worst lol.
Some people have had good experiences, but it just hasn’t happened to me yet. Most people in the FB groups have said mostly negative things about BYD service so far.
You’ll hardly have issues with a new car, but if something goes wrong, that’s when they make it harder and more costly to get things done.

Im in the same boat, Im keen on the Jaecoo J5 EV but wife also wants to look at the Sealoin 5, which does seem like good value but im slightly worried about the brand and things like properiety parts like the 12V battery.

One of mate bought sealion 6. Unfortunately he had an accident in December. Someone rear ended this car. The tail gate was damaged. The insurance company has the car since first week of Jan and still hasnt fixed the car yet due to parts shortage in Australia.

thanks for that feedback, that is important to know for sure.

Thanks OP bought a few

This offer has unofficially been going on at my local dealer for the last 2 months. Keep offering me bonus EV charger every time I've visited for a test drive.

Rival Denza SUV are getting on the road
https://www.drive.com.au/news/denza-hits-1000-orders-in-aust…
Not really rivals to these models, different cars and same parent company…. it's like saying a Lexus LX600 is a rival to a Kluger and Rav 4.

Right. First I had read it as byd premium model then later it said brand Denza. The badge logo is nothing similar. Now I know. The b9 looks good from the front.

An 11kw charger is fairly pointless for the sealion 5 as I heard it only does up to 3.3kw AC charging. Which wouldn't even max out a 15A socket. Thats how much thought goes into these promos I guess. Paying for a 11kw circuit and supply would cost a mozza. Then only charging at 3.3kw…

My daughter's 1 year old BYD Atto 3 is down 100km from its original 350km range.
She was charging it up at Goulburn on her way to Canberra from Minto and it had already used 60% of its charge!!!
Meanwhile another BYD Atto was trying to charge next to her at Goulburn but refused to do the handskae with the charger.
I dont know what happened to that Atto. I guess it got stuck in Goulburn.
And this week she put the BYD Atto into DRIVE and it went BACKWARDS!Form what I can see Id stay well awy from any BYD EV

If it went down by 100 km it means the battery degraded to about 70% and this means you're eligible for a battery replacement according to their warranty.

What year is the car, just curious. Pre-empting ourselves for the Atto3 at home too.

On the flip side, we were one of the first purchasers of the Atto 3 in Australia. Car has been running fine and battery life is a non-issue. I think we have 73000kms.
