  • This or the Bosch 12v range?

    • Consider the skins you need. The Bosch 12v is compact but the skins are geared for professionals. The 18v Bosch is more aligned to diy'er need. I wanted gardening skins and the 12v range didn't have those.

Both are very good and both have different tools to offer. I was originally tossing up between Bosch and M12 and ultimately went with M12 til I swapped to Makita 12V a bit later on.

The main reason at the time was Bosch didn't have, and still don't have a rotary hammer in the 12V line. Which is kind of absurd as I think Bosch invented it.

Ultimately I am happy with the Makita 12V, other than they have let the range stagnate with no recent new releases. They have been used for work and at home, They all get the job done, do 90-95% of what I need from them and I have not had a failure in the 8 years since I moved to them.

Also Makita are generally a little less expensive than both Bosch and Milwaukee.

TLDR, they are all good. Pick the one you can afford and has the tools you need:)

      • What do you mostly use the 12V for? I'm thinking of getting this for my mum, she's mid-60s and just doing general DIY. I thought being a bit lighter might make it easier for her? Just not sure if they'd be powerful enough

I used to use them for work doing aircon installs. Now it's just your typical diy, making some furniture, car stuff and general handyman stuff for family and friends etc.

They have enough power to do nearly everything I need from them. And I much prefer using them than the few 18V tools I own. On the very rare occasion I have to use an 18V drill for example, it just feels big and clunky. In fact I don't even own an 18V impact driver:)

Pretty confident they will do nearly everything she would want from them. And at this price, it is a true bargain.

And unfortunately I am now also mid 60's too, lol.

    • Makita has not released any new 12v gear since 2021. Consider it a stagnant platform.

      • +1

Almost correct, they released a 5.0AH battery with 21700 cells about 2 years go and they just released a new vacuum. So yeah, it's stagnant :).

Bosch are also slow but have had some decent new releases. Milwaukee is the one pushing it though.

        • +1

I bought one a Milwaukee M12 and it grew to being 90% my daily tool use now.

    • Neither, unless you're a cabinetmaker or somesuch. Stick to 18V line if not.

    • I'd get the Bosch but they're back to full price.

    • The Bosch has a better design IMHO, with the battery incorporated into the handle it looks more compact and easier to maneuver.

  • makita 12v is probably the worst line up? so rare even to see them get used in videos…..

    • +1

But they would lose their Festool sponsorship….

All jokes aside, Makita has the 2nd biggest 12V lineup next to Milwaukee, Unfortunately there are some double ups and gaps in the line. plus there has been almost no new releases in about 5 years or so. It is at this point, essentially stagnant.

I sort of put this down to Makita being the smallest of the major tool manufacturers, and also being one of the few that is still privately owned. ie, not publicly listed.

They went all in on XGT 40V and sort of forgot 18V and 12V. And they didn't make the XGT dual voltage. They are definitely guilty of making some very odd decisions:)

If all of my tools were stolen and I had to start again, I think I would go back to Milwaukee. M12 as they have by far the best range. Even if it's a bit pricey and the ergo's are a bit crap due to the stem battery pack.

But the Makita 12V tools themselves, are very good, bulletproof, reasonably priced and nice to use,

    Makita >>> Ozito

Thanks OP, grabbed a few sets. I'll chuck one in the work tool bag as an emergency set

I'm shocked the standard LXT 18v charger doesn't charge both voltage platforms

  • I paid $200 for the Milwaukee version of this kit years ago. M12 is a big range, but for basics this is a great kit.

  • $239 for me when i click on the link. has it ended for others
