  • Terrible offer - Only worth even glancing at this card when the sign up offer is 270,000 rewards points and even then…….

    • with ACCC ruling on surcharges are about to be handed out, I reckon 200K will likely be the new 300K bonus.

      • *RBA

(Which won't apply to Amex because payment system legislation was only extended to Amex last year.)

        • Sorry, meant RBA not ACCC.

Right about Amex being excluded. But what happens when the bonus points competition from Visa and Master dries out is Amex naturally lowers the bar.

It may be possible banks going for dual card offerings like 10yrs ago.

  • To be considered a new member and qualify for sign-up bonuses (such as the 200,000 Membership Rewards points currently offered on the Platinum Card), you must typically meet these criteria:
No Recent History: You must not have held a card issued directly by American Express Australia in the last 18 months.
Excluded Card Types: Existing holders of bank-issued Amex cards (e.g., those from ANZ, CBA, NAB, or Westpac) may still be considered "new" if they don't hold a direct Amex-issued card.

    • So…….current American Express Velocity means I can't go for this? Such a pity, I think it's a great deal.

  • My current referral link is 225000 points, it was 275000, bad deal

    • Is that as in you have an Amex already and have a link in your portal to refer others?

      • Yes, I have been an Amex member for a long time.

  • I am gonna open the debate here like any other time.

Is the card and yearly fees worth it? Yes and no. If you travel a lot, like Luxury hotels, cashback offers, it's worth every cent. We get easily 7-8k worth of benefits each year. Accor, Virgin membership, access to fine hotels, travel insurance etc etc.

Is it a churners card? No, not at all!!

Recent devaluation of points? Yes they hurt, but if you mainly rely on Virgin and Qantas, these are unchanged.
Still worth converting to others like Qatar, Cathay etc as there is no other comparable card in the market.

You want to suss what's out there? Nothing! This card has its own monopoly in Australia and nothing comes closer to it. Citi had one that was close but still not this.

Is 200k signup bonus good? Possibly it hasn't gone any higher in a while. It went upto 275 I think, maybe referral of 225k still worth it. With ACCC cracking down, I am doubtful it will go much higher.

    • I agree with above. Definitely not a churners card and can give lots of value through travel, hotels, dining and cash back offers.

Out of curiosity, what do you mean by virgin membership?

      • He hasn't partaken in the horizontal poka. which is greatly honoured, especially in this day and age. he is a unicorn that needs to be praised.

      • Virgin lounge membership

    • Another thing that should be noted is the supplementary card holders (No extra cost) get a lot of the same lounge benefits (Only one extra priority pass unlimited lounge pass but all other lounge partners except LH). Australian Frequent Flyer has a breakdown of the benefits.

I'd say this would be more handy for travellers out of Adelaide with the new plaza premium domestic now open.

    • Still cries when I think of being late to milk Citi Payall feature by a good couple of years!!

      • That was indeed mind blowing, as was the priority pass credits at airport bars/cafes. The good old days.

    • 2 free nights at Accor - approx $400
      Travel credit - $450
      Local dining - $200
      Amazon - $79
Lounge visit x4 an year - approx $200

      Above is $1329

Add - points earned, and depending on usage you can easily get $1000 worth… and I’ve not included the cashback and offers yet.

In short, you can easily recover the fee and way more if you travel just twice an year..

PS - given its charge card, it doesn’t impact your borrowing capacity (key benefit)

      • nah doesn’t given amazon anymore

        • 👍

      • And if you use it to book business class flights, you can easily save $200-$300 per booking using the International Airline Program.

        • Then the Amex lounge visits are useless because you get it anyway.

          • @cheapskate101: Not really, the lounges you get access to when flying international business class are way better than the lounges you get access to through this card (VA domestic business lounges and Priority Pass lounges).

            • @nexus4: That's what I meant. You don't need lounge access if you fly business class. You save on business class tickets but don't make use of the Amex lounge access.

      • Accor Plus Explorer membership is $349
Travel credit limited to Amex Travel, can get cheaper looking through google flights/Skyscanner. Often prices are more than $450 cheaper.
Local dining - $200 is good
Overseas dining - $200 also good if you are able to visit
Luxury Hotels - cheaper booking direct with hotel. However, the late check-out can make a difference. The bonus credit you get is per stay so better for short stays.
        Prime - benefit ending soon
Lounge - I fly business class anyway but good to let up to 4 supplementary card holders visit an overcrowded lounge.
Points - you often pay surcharge anyway and if so it will cost more than the value of the points.
Cashback and offers - can get with other cards without an annual fee.

So, maybe break even at most. If you tax deduct the card fee then you will more likely be ahead but do so with care. I got it because I like a shiny metallic card… Then again, you hardly show it because you tap your phone… 😭

      • $200 overseas dining too. Used that up well.

      • Thanks for this more specific example. "We get easily 7-8k worth of benefits each year." could mean anything.

    • Works well for travellers with just 1 or more luxury trips per year - FHR benefits are great when used at the right property (need to check rates to ensure that its not drastically more expensive via FHR is all), the free travel insurance is top tier, if you are pushing >$100k through it then the card pays for itself. +1 on the monopoly thing, nothing else comes close. Qantas redemptions suck unless you are platinum / P1 so transferring to partners is a huge benefit too. I've kept it as my daily card - wasn't sure if I'd renew after the first year but due to my travel patterns its ridiculously good value.

This is all also ignoring the key benefit of it being a charge card and not a credit card.

      • Low impact on credit score, FHR is solid as, especially when you have 1 night to stay and you get all the benefits and 4pm checkout for those late afternoon flights.

    • Curious if you get 7-8k worth of benefits, wonder how much the spend would be?

      • About 10-12k per month. It's not about how much you spend, rather more about what you spend on.

  • Absolutely agree with @oh Daddys comment above.
As a side note for people who are wanting cheaper options- I have had the Amex discovery card back in 2018 and closed it and didn’t pay a single cent as it was offsetted by the travel credit.
Coming to the plat- honestly this is the GOAT in Australia a d agree with the comment above only Citi was closer but not the same.
I got Platinum via referral here last year and considering my travel plans I have reaped benefits for $3K last year alone. The only change this year is the Amazon credit has been suspended.
Will it pay for it again, yes we are travelling again this year and I am planning to have it again for this year.
Of course, there are more benefits in the US as it is AMEX however I couldn’t find anything closer to this in Australia which includes the founders card.

  • $400 Dining credit not guaranteed for 2027 at this stage so don't count on it.

But yes great card.. So much so I have the platinum and the Centurion both

    • Not sure why the neg… But the restaurant credit is clearly not extended for 2027 at this stage, going by Amex website itself.

    • Can you share more about spend profile for a cent invite? Curious how far off I am.

      • Mine is quite high. I'm doing around 200-250k per month with business expenses.

I told them I don't do lifestyle expenses but I'll do experiences.

  • TBH we have extracted so much value out of our Amex Plat over 10 years that they could double the fee and we would still be ahead for the next 20 years.

    • Any good suggestions or thoughts?

      • Have a 1 year old require emergency hospitalisation in the USA for a week due to RSV and get a bill for 150k USD.

They settled the entire claim for us very quickly and booked us business class flights home, then booked us return business class flights to resume our vacation when she was better.

This isn't even including the other claims they have paid like the travel delay which we have claimed like 8 times for about 1400AUD. Baggage delay etc.

Plus the dining credit and the travel credit + the platinum reserve card which is a "companion" credit card for the plat charge (we still are grandfathered in and get a yearly 400AUD travel credit) with no annual fee.

We have the card via a professional association and only pay an annual fee of 1200

  • I closed the card recently.. it's such a great card if U can get the bonus MR and use it for first/business class flights. Travel credit for hotels or flights. Priority pass for even budget airlines. They give many deals on amex offers as well.

Tip: the annual dining credit of 200 domestic and 200 overseas renews annually on Jan 1. If U sign up around now U can use it twice before cancelling it. I managed to get $800 just from dining in 13 months without triggering the second annual fee.

    • It's past Jan 1 and dining credit not renewing for 2027…. Might be announced later in the year though

  • Why there is no referral link added to this posting?

    • It is there is the drop down.

  • Referral seems to be between 200K-225K at the moment for this card.

  • Getting this later in the year when my 18 months is up. Was hoping for 275k bonus signup

  • Can you use the points to book hotels at the Gold Saucer?

  • Out of curiosity, for an upgrade offer from Gold Charge, how does 150k points sound?

    • Pretty good actually.

      • OK, will have a final reflection and get it if I can schedule upcoming travel

  • Converts to 100k velocity. Not great!

    • 20% bonus at the moment for Amex plat

  • The Platinum is definitely not for everyone. It is primarily a travellers card after all. But even with just a 200k bonus there is still a clear pathway to getting maximum value.

    At a minimum:

    • 200,000 MR points = $1,000 cash back floor value (perhaps worth more depending how much you value converting to Qantas, Virgin (at 2:1) or even the other airlines at 3:1
    • $450 annual travel credit
    • Up to $400 dining credit per calendar year (hopefully this is extended beyond 2026)
For the churners - keep the card for the 12 months so you can get the dining credit in 2027 as well (assuming promo continues for another year)

That alone gets you around $2,250 in value before even factoring in:

    • Accor+ Explorer membership (with instant ALL Gold and 2x buy one get one free nights)
    • Unlimited 2x Priority Pass (plus Plaza Premium, Virgin Australia lounges, Centurion etc)
    • Fine Hotels & Resorts benefits
    • Hilton Gold, Marriott Bonvoy Gold, Radisson Premium
    • Travel insurance (much better than most other credit card offerings)

The key point for churners is that the floor value of the points is $1000. After that, you only need to extract $450 of the credits to effectively break even on the annual fee. For most people this should be achievable.

It is not the highest sign-up bonus we have seen but like others have said the days of 275k/300k are probably over. For churners it might be worth waiting (just in case we're all wrong :D)

  • Im in year 2 with this card and like opinions above was hesitant to upgrade (from the Explorer) but it has absolutely been worth it. The main benefit sfor me is that a heap of the perks extend to another card holder, and we're primarily using the travel perks with Hilton and Priority pass.

So my partners reaped the benefits of the platinum too. We both travel a little bit for work, so we're both using the priority pass, both using Hilton Gold - which has really accelerated our collective Hilton points earn also. We've had penthouse or suite room upgrades, free food & drinks, executive lounge etc - even over peak-periods such as Xmas/New years.

I will say personally Accor Plus is very hard to get the benefits of besides being a Gold member. The free nights is only for a subset of hotels on offer and seems to be restrictive on usage, dates etc.

The restraurant credits is great too! We use it to have a 'fancy' dinner at least once locally and once internationally each year.

    • I currently have explorer card. So there is a chance tobupgrade to this card and take ad antage of the points or you upgraded and forfeited the points but take advantage of the other perks.

      • if you already hold explorer you wont get the bonus points sadly

    • I thought most people only keep this card for one year due to the high annual fee.

  • Same deal available with referrals so don't forget to help out your fellow ozbargainers if you plan on taking up the offer!

I'd say this deal is worth it, you more than get your money back in value and gives you a year to evaluate whether it's worth keeping beyond.

  • I received 225k offer and I believe it is currently the highest. i think it will not return to 275k offer ever.

  • If I have the Business Platinum (on my business name?), I guess that still disqualifies me from bonus points on this ?

  • Does the Priority Pass from this card allow another guest along with you ? (Similar to Citi Prestige)?

  • A few questions if anyone would be able to help out please.

    1. Can you split the dining credit over multiple visits? I.e. 24/02 @ restaurant 1 aus $150 total spend ($150 credit) and 12/03 @ restaurant 2 aus $100 total spend ($50 credit)?

    2. How is the travel credit applied? I had a qantas AMEX a number of years ago, where iirc I would log in to the travel portal, make a booking and apply the credit as a discount. From what I am reading here Travel Credit T&C I would need to have paid the yearly fee/minimum and then book the travel paying in full in which AMEX will then send credit to the account?

    Thx in advance..

    • Good question. I had a same doubt

      1. Yes, you can use them multiple times until you reach $200. However, the restaurants need to be on their list, not any restaurant.

      2. You have to book flights/tickets from Amex app/website, travel credit will be applied at check out, but you can only use it ONCE, not like restaurant credits.

      • Thanks mate. Any clarification on item 6 from the T&C - do I get travel credit within opening card or after a month after paying $1450/other spend? @hattori9x

        • You will get charged $1,450 as soon as you activated the card, so all other benefits with come with it right away, except for the points

          • @hattori9x: Thanks. I have a few extra Q's if you could DM me pls?

  • Applied + got approved in less than 5 minutes, very impressive.

    • Wife gets this,I get rejected by mail after a week LOL. Same financial situation,I think difference is they’ve figured out how much I’ve taken from them over the years!

    • Amex is pretty efficient when it comes to approval if you meet the requirements!

  • Getting rejected even if I've got excellent credit score. Any idea what might've caused it? Have got pretty decent income and low expenses.

  • Anyone knows if I’m eligible if I have a corporate Amex green card supplied by my company?

    • Yes i think you are, please dm to discuss further

  • Blisteringly quick application. Best ever.

  • How has anyone found this after applying, speed to get the card and bonus points?

    • its really quick, I got the card the day after getting approved. The supplementary cards were also shipped super quick. The bonus points land fairly quick too.

Use OzB random referral link above as many times as you can to land an offer of 225,000. PM me if you can't find the 225K one, happy to share mine.

  • Priority pass benefits are being reduced from October 1st
