Seatylock Foldylock Forever 90 $159.20 Delivered @ Dirodi

200

Great price on this highly rated folding bike lock.

More convenient than a U-lock and comes with a nice mount.

Usually around $200 and never see it go on sale. Just bought one for my e-bike as I find the u-lock too bulky and a pain to carry around.

Note this is very heavy at 1.76kg, perfect for securing valuable ebikes though. Would combine with a light plastic zip-tie style one for maximum ability to inconvenience thieves though. Look up ULAC Air (cheap as on AliE).

    • Just looked at the ULAC. More of an alarm setup. Ali Express also have motorbike alarms that clip on the handlebars for a couple of bucks. Once the bike is moved, it starts screeching.

  • My e-bike has good inbuilt security features including a locking rear wheel. So that + a good lock has me feeling pretty secure. Just glad I can mount this one on the frame and not have it occupying space and clunking around in the trunk bag. Indeed it is heavy though.

Someone tried drilling out the battery lock on my ebike a few months ago but gave up before they were able to get the job done.

I had to finish the job, drilling it out and then replacing the frame lock myself.

My bicycle was inside a secure apartment basement car park, inside a locked storage cage, locked to the cage with the U lock and the rear tyre frame lock also stopping it from being able to be moved even if they got it off the U lock.

No matter how secure it is, I now take the battery with me after it's locked up.

      • Were there any cameras installed there?

        • +5

Not looking at the storage cage, but the guy was caught on camera going into the carpark, putting a piece of tape over the sensors on the inner + outer gates to keep them open and then going 4 levels down into the carpark. The building manager let me see a quick look at the guys face but he won't turn over any footage to me.

Police report was made but not even followed up on. It's Melbourne so nothing will be done.

@studentl0an: Maybe it was the building manager

          • @studentl0an: The cops are too busy nowadays for any follow-up. They only like to beat up protesters. Less paperwork, unless they're caught on camera

Don't know about the quality but upvote for a good brand name and good product name

  • I just bought an ebike and now buying up the accessories. What's the difference between this bike lock and cheaper one from Amazon like this?

The one you linked to can be cut through with bolt cutters in about 5 seconds or combination hacked in about 1 minute.

This one would need an angle grinder to get through and would be much louder and conspicuous to steal.

    • Cable locks can be snipped in 2 seconds with bolt cutters by thieves, but this one is harder to break.

      • I learnt that the very hard way with my spanking new bike in Canberra many years ago.

    • Try avoid using cable lock as your main lock. The particular type of lock you posted can easily be cut it using hand pliers let alone bolt cutters.

Chain locks and U locks are the ones you'd like to be looking at. Then the difference in price would mean better material, less weakest link (usually the pivot point or the lock body) etc.

Unfortunately you cannot get a perfect lock tho. The better lock would simply cause more headache to the thieves so hopefully they'll move onto other bikes less secured.

      • ahh damn. I see alot of ebikes particularly from uber delivery drivers secured like that so I thought that's way you normally do it. Is there another cheaper alternative for a bike lock? $159.20 is still quit expensive for me.

          what about $82? https://www.amazon.com.au/Kryptonite-Evolution-Mini-7-Bicycl…

I did get this when it was 120 and it survived two attempts of angle grinders in Sydney CBD https://www.amazon.com.au/Kryptonite-Evolution-Integrated-Bi…

for ebikes though if your battery is detachable please please please take it with you regardless of type of locks you have.

          • @hastetowaste: Someone tried to steal your ebike in the CBD? Where did you leave it? Was it left outside overnight or only for a few hours when you had to do some shopping etc?

          • +1

            @hastetowaste: That's a decent recommendation

        • Uber drivers will only be away for a couple of minutes at most. So good lock or not, it probably matters less. But if you have a decent bike and will park out of your sight for a couple of hours. A decent lock is worth every cents.

          • @bighoho123: What's the best type of lock to prevent theft when I'm sitting outdoors—like at a café—and my bike is parked right next to me or somewhere I can see it clearly. I keep imagining a scenario where someone could just give me a quick shove and jump on the bike and ride off before I can react.

Would a U‑lock or wheel lock be enough to prevent theft in this scenario?

Something like this affordable like this??
            https://www.amazon.com.au/Via-Velo-Anti-Theft-Security-Mount…

            • @Homr: Hiplok Z Lok with either combination or key. It’s basically a zip tie. But perfect for the cafe or going into a shop for a few minutes, or for securing your helmet. Even Kmart has a $15 zip tie combination lock if you want something a bit cheaper.

              • @nubzy: What if i don't have anything to tie my bike around with??

  • The LockPickingLawyer recommends and uses the Kryptonite Evolution chain lock. Could this be better?

    • +2

Depends if u want to lug a heavy chain around with you. Chains are a lot heavier and more bulky than folding locks.

      • 2kg for the 55cm version. A little heavier than this

    • +1

The folding locks is aesthetically better / compact plus you can mount it on your bike / ebikes whereas you have to carry chain locks.

However, chain locks are more flexible when you don't much much space to work with so if you park near busy bike racks it might be an advantage.

    • +1

not sure if lockpickinglawyer ratings are relevant to real life scenarios… if i remember correctly, the medium to best rated locks only have few minutes difference of time to break the lock. So, in reality, if lets say the bike is completely out of sight for the whole day, it will still likely be stolen.

  • This style of lock is brilliant.

  • If you want protection more than portability, then go a diamond rated lock for greater resistance to angle grinder attacks:
    Hiplok DX https://share.google/2imvArCPdSPI1jkzj

    • That's a good price and weight for a diamond rated lock.

  • It's showing $169.15 for me?

  • @nubzy just went back to check the lock and the websites down (404). Possibly temporary. Hope the business still exists?

    • Website is back up now. Unfortunately lock is no longer on sale. I received mine last week and happy with it. Don’t drop it though as I took a gouge out of the plastic coating with a small drop on concrete.

      • Glad you got yours and glad to the hear website back up.

I'd never heard of the Seatylock brand til your post and had a look and was impressed by the price+weight of their Diamond rated d lock. I thought to myself perhaps I should get a diamond rated lock and then I checked my current locks and they are already diamond rated. Doh
