There's a bajillion ways to play teh gaymez fur freeeeeee

      But, most aren't idiot proof,
most aren't plug it in, turn it on and easy to hide in a cupboard by the TV…
heck, or even leave out on the entertainment unit in full view of offspring/ your wife/sister

Retroarch runs on Android TV, Apple TV and even Xbox One/Series with no jailbreak.

It's not like you need a PC connected to your TV. If anything this is just adding clutter to your TV setup.

But apparently these are "idiot" AKA "kid and wife" proof/friendly ;)

All the tech savvy and nerdy wives approve of this comment.

          • @Grish: You must be really popular with the ladies

            • -1

@Hinee: Me? I just quoted the OP… I guess OP must also be popular with the ladies?

              • @Grish: My wife says she loves me, and I do have a few female friends. Male ones too.
                :-P.
What was your 8 bit computer of choice? I'll bet it wasn't as good as the ZX Spectrum ;-)

                • @bleugh: Sony hitbit MSX2 was one of my fav 80's 8bit with tapes and carts.

        • Yes, but some of us like the look etc of the old ones.

          That said, no thanks

  • -6

Was the C64 ever released in this colourway?

If not this is just a blatant cash grab.

    • +7

It's a blatant cash grab regardless.

    • +3

Nope, That would be the Commodore 16, different beast.
Yep, for sure, cash grab to refresh near-decade old moulds to obtain some cashflow for a tiny company!.

you'll find a beige one second hand for massively less.

    • +4

      "colourway"

      bro it's black

      • Yes, the colourway is black "bro".

  • +2

Guessing they had to stop using the Commodore branding now that Commodore exist as a proper company again, re-making the 64 https://www.commodore.net/product-page/commodore-64-ultimate…

    • +1

they never did use it anyway!, it's always been TheC64, and no Chicken lips key….

      • Ahh fair enough, I am sure I had seen other companies using it before. but could be wrong!

  • +14

those games are fun for about 10secs

    • +9

      "Stay a while, stay for…"
      "Naa, I'm done."

      • +3

        Dont diss impossible mission.

NB its not on the game list, theres very little I recognise there apart from GNG

    • +1

      What… like Stroker? lol

    • -7

Yes, this whole novelty only last 10 seconds. Waste of money.

  • the joystick is worth the $140 price tag alone!! (cf. ps5 controllers)

  • not the same as C64 ultimate.

    • c64 ultimate isnt the same thing anyway.

      Not equivalent

  • +3

No classic C64 games. This machine only has community-created games from the last 20 years.

  • +2

Never too late for a happy childhood ;-)

  • +3

Waiting for the mini Amstrad CPC464 so I can play mini-Bruce Lee

    • There's no need to wait for some random company to package up an emulator that already exists https://docs.libretro.com/library/caprice32/

    • +3

That was a nice little game for its day…. but probably the only game that still holds it's own for me from the Amstrad days is Boulderdash.

      • Boulder dash was the ducks nuts. I played the GBA version but did not have the patience to wrap my head around it any more. Sad!

I played the Bruce Lee game as well. I remember getting it as part of the "They Sold a Million" compilation. One boring morning I completed Bruce Lee eight times in succession, until it clocked and I got a kill screen. Probably the only reason we remember it is that it was at least easy enough to finish.

        • I played it on an amstrad emulator a couple of years back and even just listening to the opening music bought back a flood of memories. Game mechanic still quit fun and challenging 40 years later (farrrk… 40 years… that hurts to say).

      • Batman? The isometric one?

        • +1

Head over heels was my go to for the isometric game genre, never did get to play batman I don't think. Head over heels was quite good as it involved 2 characters that you had to use in conjunction at many points in the game. It was probably the forerunner of modern two player games.

          • +1

@Gravy: I had that game and I never thought about that, I was thinking of Goof Troop or Lost Vikings, but Head Over Heels is even older.

  • +2

I remember playing boulderdash on a Micro-Bee, along with Hordes of Deep Realm and Defender.

    • +2

You had good games on the microbee. I only had island, yacht, cricket and bricks. I typed bricks in from a magazine :(

      • +1

Yeah, I remember typing lines of code from a magazine to make a breakout clone. You could change things up and give yourself infinite lives, change colours, etc. I thought I was such a little hacker.

        • +1

Hot tip…. don't type the code "CLS" after you and your mate spend the day typing in a game… true story.

    • Yeah, used to love boulderdash on the original Commodore 64 (yes, I am that old). Remember I got quite high in the levels too.

  • +1

Love these. Already have the Beige but I do like the black.

  • +1

I'm not knocking the deal but I don't think I've heard of any of those games.

    • +3

They seem to be all "recently" released games. No real classics in there, guess they didnt want to spend any money on game licenses.

The question is, can this device actually play any of the original games via USB or something? Nothing in the specs to mention that it does or even that it has a USB port.

Edit: The gamesmen have a much better description of its function, it does support USB and roms https://www.gamesmen.com.au/thec64-mini-console-black-editio…

    • +3

They're not classic games. This machine only has modern community-created games. Pretty pointless.

  • +2

The older version in the original post has MUCH better games.

    • yo can add your own, and edit the carousel also to add your own witha few aftermarket hacks!

  • Was squinting initially hoping it was a Holden Commodore diecast

  • +1

    No tape deck!

  • Be nice if it was the C64 Maxx with working keyboard

    • But, I make a working keyboard that fits into the Mini!.
almost finished witht the new design too!

  • +1

I have the beige one and it's not too bad though the joystick is useless. I've had to source other joysticks/gamepads to make the games playable. Ended up getting the Logitech F710 though I would like a proper joystick.
