Replacing a Head Unit in a 2005 Toyota Corolla

The stock head unit in my car has a broken volume pot. I have sourced an original Toyota head unit but unfortunately it's for slightly newer models (2007 onwards) and the cable configuration is different.

Can I get it to work using this wiring harness adapter to ISO ?
https://www.temu.com/au/wiring-harness-adapter--for-toyota--…
and then connect another adapter from ISO back to the original plugs:

Or would it be easier to just buy an aftermarket head unit with standard connectors + wiring harness adapter to suit?

I haven't pulled the original one out yet as I'm not sure how to proceed but I'm thinking trying to retrofit the newer (2007 onwards) stock Toyota head unit is going to be complicated because the wiring configuration is completely different and there are extra connectors such as 3.5mm aux and other functions that are not going to work on my older car.

Just get an aftermarket unit. You don't lose any functionality as the stock head unit has no integration at all with the vehicle.

Interesting. I didn't know they made these car play units for older vehicles. I guess I'll need to take the original head unit out first and see what the wiring plugs look like.

Heh, I have this https://automotivesuperstore.com.au/alpine-ilx-507ai in my 1999 Camry. All of these units come with a wide variety of plugs, and if not there are no shortage of adapters that will bridge any gaps.

When the head unit is worth more than your car 😂

@Windows7forever: But the 27 year old car is more reliable than a brand new alpine head unit.

            • @MS Paint: Yes. The Camry will probably outlive the head unit.I just bought my 21 year old Corolla. It was love at first sight.

              • @Windows7forever: Yeah, I'm on my second double din head unit already. I only got 3 years out of the Pioneer, sadly.

And yes, the head unit is worth more than the car. lol

You get what you pay for.

OP, do yourself a favour and spend a bit extra on something half decent.

2005 ZZE-122R head unit is 200mm Toyota size double DIN. Aftermarket ISO is 180mm wide. Standard power/front speaker plug and rear speaker plug, same connections they've used for donkeys years. Antenna is standard ISO. No other connections.

If you're wanting to keep it basic, best factory head unit to fit is a 2011 onwards entry level unit with Bluetooth streaming and hands free. Part number is a PZQ60-00511 to match your green illumination colour. There are bucket loads of them on FB Marketplace for as cheap as $20. Just need an antenna adapter for the newer antenna socket from Toyota parts PZQ60-00121, about $15.

Don't use any factory head units from 2007-2010, they're shit and the sound quality/Bluetooth quality is dreadful.

Thanks for the info. Will look into it.

You can buy Bluetooth head units for as low as $12 on Temu.

      • That may not be a great 'Head' j……

      • And they will be craptastic and you'll wish you purchased something better.

  • Does the 2007 hu require an unlock code and if so do you have that code?
