I understand this is the first gen of 85/1.4 GM but the optical performance is still there. If you don't mind the slower AF this is a great lens for any work you find fit.

Many people compare this to Sigma 85/1.4 DG DN. Here's the TL;DR – some find the bokeh of Sony 85/1.4 and its overall rendering a tad better. YMMV.

Here for a general comparison.

  • The GM II has significant improvement over this.

    • How much does that lens cost?

      • i paid $1899 when it was on sale but currently it is about $2.3k

  • Damn boi!

  • Don't do it.. 👀
The sigma equivalent (a much superior lens) is below 1k everyday on ebay with a free sd card..

  • Still waiting for the long rumoured 85/1.2

  • Stay away from GM1. It's outclassed by pretty much all 3rd party 85 1.4 , from viltrox to sigma and even the lightweight samyang

  • Impeccable lens.

I was able to test this lens versus Samyang, Sigma, Zeiss Batis f/1.8 and the 2nd gen from own kit and a Sony photography workshop.

The Samyang and Sigma both exhibit a warm and autumn like colour cast though the weight and size difference was very noticeable against the former.

I also was able to compare against the classic Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 II adapted to FE and similar in price used - two different lens for two different styles with the Canon more for it's artistic rendition instead of modern optical sharpness.

Where this Sony shines is the price, solid build and the Bokeh. It feels like a workhorse lens that does not require too much babying around the outside elements and you get a lot of features of the second version at almost half the price.

    Nice post OP.

  • get the sigma 85/1.4 if on budget

  • no love for the 35mm f1.4 GM? same discount plus Sony Cashback, it was cheaper last week though

The new Sigma might be better, but it is going to be more expensive.

    • Insufficient stock, cannot be posted here.

    • The cashback terms say it's not elligable on box damaged items. I just bought the 50mm f1.4, which was down to $1500 from the $2000 rrp, then had an additional $200 discount on ebay already. $1300 is pretty good (hell, its even a good price if its used), but I'm gonna attempt the cash back anyway and see how it goes.

      • Does your Sony invoice (via eBay) say "box damaged" on it?

        • Sony emailed a seperate invoice that has the item coded and shoes the low price but doesnt actually say "box damaged" anywhere.

I submitted on the 20th, then two days later got an email saying my cashback was approved! Another six days have gone by and I still don't have the money, but it sounds like it's coming.
