Just got my first islay whiskey

I can't stand it. I think I'm gonna give it away

      Ardbeg?

        15yr lagavulin
        Tastes like a camp fire

Some ice took the edge off

Lagavulin is a bit of a rough introduction to peat!

If you're not totally done with the idea give something like Talisker a try. It's a lot milder than most of the Islay whiskies. If that still doesn't do it for you then at least you'll know.

@boozed: Thanks mate. I just wanted to try high quality first πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

        • +8

I will absolutely take that off you.

Lagavulin is one of my favourite distilleries

          • @slipstreamexpress: I more meant give away to a mate, but if you want to hit me with your best offer via dm go for it πŸ˜‚

          • @slipstreamexpress: Hey if you in Sydney hit me up
I have couple bottles of Lagavulin that I do not want anymore. Will sell cost price (bought before price jack)

You probably mean the 16yo. A shame you had to buy a whole bottle to try it! It's definitely not for everyone - but it certainly is for me. It's my favourite whiskey out of everything I've tried.

          • @JuliusCheaper: You're right

Lagavulin 16 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700mL (Bottle)

            • @lilviss: Tbf I did a random tasting experience at Dans a couple of years ago and they brought out a Lagavulin 21 that was oxidised and tasted like paint

              • +1

@King Steuart: Didn't know that was a thing

                • @lilviss: When i go back to Scotland I'll do islay but they're heavy drams that give me horrible headaches. Lagavulin is probably the softest πŸ˜…

        • It’s recommended to water it down

I misread the title as implying a Shiraz finished Laphroaig and then wondered whether it would be great or awful, I don't think it could be anywhere else on the spectrum!

    • +1

      I reckon great.

First peated whiskey I tried was Laphroaig select cask ($90 and it came with two glencairn-style glasses). It was a great intro to peat - obvious enough to know the difference, but not too strong to scare you away.

Also tried Johnnie Walker Sweet Peat later on - that was alright from memory.

Do yourself a flavour and get the Balvenie 12yo instead

      For $75?

      • +1

        $85 - but still a bargain!

    • Now that's a great recommendation.πŸ‘ŒπŸ˜‹

  • Thanks.
I bought Laphroiag and some merlot wine for 76.3

  • One of my favourite! Taste like bushfire, absolutely love it.

  • And if you want a cheapie that still tastes pretty decent, try "For Peat's Sake" it's got some decent smoke and it's cheap enough to share with friends generously.

  • Currently unavailable in Eastern Victoria. Probably snapped up by all the crooks in Coles Management.
