Wish the z80 ultra was sold through Amazon and stocked here.
That phone has an awesome camera system. Pitty about the selfie camera through.

    512GB ROM

    So no software upgrades, then?

    • 2 major android updates promised

      • +3

Considering my downvotes, I guess nobody knows what "ROM" stands for. It isn't the same as "flash" or "storage".

        • +1

The term isn't used as strictly as it was in the 8 bit computer era.

          It's also a matter of perspective: to non-privileged apps it's read-only.

        • No, your downvotes are likely due to your obvious disingenuity. You definitely know they don't actually mean ROM in the title and mean storage, but you just want to nitpick.

    • +4

      I understood you my man.

      READ ONLY MEMORY

      • I think it is because ROMs used to be your non-volatile memory so some people called flash memory, flash ROM when it came out. Essentially it is a continuation of the idea of EEPROM which was non volatile memory where device settings where stored that could be reprogrammed by the device but then worked like a conventional ROM.

Technically ROM is wrong but not that wrong and RAM would be more wrong.

    • Meh my OnePlus 13r was great value, and performs beautifully. Only thing holding me back was Chinese OS fear but turns out it's just as good as any other now.

      • -5

If you buy a gaming phone and look at gaming reviews and your retail phone performs at 10% more power to get less stable framerates than a review phone it’s pretty scummy imo

    • So have you ever owned and used one?

Or have you been sucked into the fear mongering?

      • -3

I wouldn’t mind one if it was cheaper than a s26u, but when a base s26u is $200 cheaper with better software support, camera and screen, I used to think they were better for gaming but apparently they aren’t even better for that

        • +2

did you see the link above? this phone has near 0 thermal throttling in real world gaming use

          • -2

@viper8548: Did you see they send reviewers cherry picked chips that perform better than retail units?

        • -2

In what way is a S26U $200 cheaper than this phone? This phone is US$749 while the S26U base model is US$1,299.

If you're referring to Australian prices, understand that the promotions and discounts you get are exclusive to Australia. The major markets like US and EU do not get blanket discounts on S26U pre-orders and such. Redmagic doesn't even have an official Australian store, so how could they ever offer a promotion to match?

  • Hmm u can get s26U for like the same price

    • 512GB for this price? How?

      • +1

        Commbank yello
        First order 5%
        $200 eco voucher
        $100 thank you voucher
$200 ai voucher (add 2x ultra slim magnet case)
        $50 commbank voucher
Total price for s26u 256gb+2 magnet cases = $1166.84 without Amex or $1066.84 with Amex (add the price difference for 512gb/1tb price)

        • +1

Would be nice to be able to get those vouchers :(

          • @Bugs: Next year. Most of these you have to register a week or two in advance of the annoucement to get them even though they are free vouchers. Then they have an expiry, so must be used in the preorder window. Edu or Corporate portals always have the best price and combines with most voucher codes. Didn't need Commbank, EDU email addresses got a $50 'O Week' voucher too

        • I'm putting in exactly those vouchers and getting $1,892.90

    • +2

Except the s26U has bad cooling compared to this and will throttle in 10-15mins

    • maybe the base version with only 12GB ram and 256gb storage.
this phone is primarily gaming focused, which is a different market from those that want the s26 ultra

    • You can get an S25u and a privacy screen protector for less than an s26u

      • +2

It's a lot harder to toggle the privacy screen protector

        • -1

It's like you want people to see you're on cornhub but don't want them to see just your password?

I mean it's one hell of an engineering feat to have directional backlighting, but a selective redactment isn't something very useful… I mean passwords have been hidden as **** for decades. Plus there's gonna be instances where the apps aren't programmed well to tell the phone to hide the log in boxes.

I'd want to be hiding the keyboard and the actual screen itself so people won't know exactly how much debt I have with sharks. Something a $3 privacy screen does just as good.

          • @krisspy: Toggle, meaning turn on and off, privacy screens make the visual darker even head on and kill viewing angles (by design). This new tech means you can be private and turn it off when watching a movie or something with your kids on a plane.

            • @BadAtNames: The s26 dims aswell when switching to privacy mode. It switches off the regular backlighting and only leaves the narrower backlighting on.

              • @krisspy: Correct, I never said you get a brighter screen while being private, just that you can toggle it off when you would prefer a brighter screen instead of ripping of the protector

    • While true for us, it's not really fair to evaluate a phone based on its currency converted import price vs exclusive massive 30-40% regional discounts. If you could pay RMB and the Chinese version was usable here, it would be significantly cheaper than even the discounted S26U.

  • shocking camera on it

Warning: Less than 3 years of security updates and only 2 Android updates with no guarantee of working with Australian network VoLTE

    • +2

I've had it for 2 months. Only network that's blocked my phone was Vodafone. Works fine with Telstra (and is listed to be compatible in Telstra Wholesale)

    • +1

For the people negging, please justify 2.5 years of updates remaining on a $1279 grey import phone

      • While most Chinese phones are grey import, this one isn't and is sold officially by Redmagic through Amazon. Their global model coverage does cover Australia this time.

        • +1

Does that justify update support shorter than $300 phones?

          • -2

@shxhshzhz: Not really responding to that bit, just the grey market section.

You should be getting full warranty + first party support, unlike other grey market imports.

However, this phone is technically priced as a mid-range phone in the global market while being flagship+, so there's a value proposition regardless of the 2.5 years of updates. If you compare RRP, similarly specced phones would be like 50% to 100% more expensive.

            • +1

@posilepton: It has a 1 year warranty which is very short for a $1279 phone. It is sold by the seller REDMAGIC Direct on Amazon but there is no official Redmagic website or support contact details for Australia.

  • The best phone

    • -1

Isn't the best phone the Nothing (3a)?

      • +7

        That was unClear.

  • +4

Avoid vodafone with this phone. They will block your phone and forward that block to all other phone providers.

    • why are they blocking this phone?

      • +5

the 000 thing. Can't guarantee to call 000 over 4G. But they are just lazy to test new phones. Telstra website has compatibility with the phone. I had a terrible week trying to get this sorted after i ported out of vodafone and they reported my phone as "fraud" to other providers. I had to involve the TIO to get it sorted

        • +3

But they are just lazy to test new phones.

They're too lazy to implement a site to check as well.

        • -5

I'm not sure it's really fair to call it lazy. Most Chinese phones aren't even officially sold in Australia, and I would think it would be unreasonable for telcos to test all the phones that people could possibly use around the world.

        • +3

It's greed, not laziness. They have calculated that not doing the test brings them more in profits from selling their phones as it statistically discourages enough consumers from trying cheaper imports.

        • Did you manage to get your phone unblocked?

          • @aveeno bb: Vodafone no. They won't budge. Telstra yes. I don't have an Optus service, though their website also states this phone is compatible with their network and won't have any issues with the VoLTE 000 calling thing. Just avoid going on any Vodafone network with this phone.

            • @teatea: ok so please correct me if im wrong;
vofafone blocks everything they haven't tested (basically everything outside of au releases). is it a TAC range ban or specific imei?
optus blocks individual imei of phone imports they haven't tested (they also don't test anything outside of aus models)
telstra doesn't block anything unless it specifically fails the 000 test

and the cherry on top is the legislation requires them to share the blocks "for safety" ?

              • +1

@User341494: Several cases I saw on whirlpool and Reddit that once Vodafone blocks it, then that particular Sim slot is blocked, which suggests that it's IMEI based. I think it has something to do with the fact that Optus and Vodafone roam onto each other for extended coverage, and follow the similar approach? Anyway, if the TAC is flagged as blocked by either Voda or Optus, best not put the Sim, which may cause that Sim slot becoming unusable with Telstra too.

What games are people playing that require a dedicated gaming phone? Emulating switch or something?

    • Usually PC/Switch emulation, some older pc games run quite well on android through emulation

    • Frames I guess. Most games can be run by most phones, but it's unlikely you can crank them up to 144 fps without top end hardware. As to why? Same reason why people want smooth frames on PC and buy 5090s.

    • +2

      I play

      • Genshin Impact
      • Wuthering Waves
      • Arknights: Endfield
      • Solo Levelling: Arise

      I used to play

      • Minecraft
      • League of Legends: Wild Rift
      • Mobile Legends

      I'm waiting for release

      • Valorant
      • Ananta
      • Seven Deadly Sins: Origins
    • I'm glad you asked, because I was wondering the same thing. It feels like anything you might want to do on a phone that requires liquid cooling etc might just be better to do on a different kind of device.

  • +3

Giving a + for the headphone jack

  • Price is tempting. This or Oneplus 15? The latter is like $1499 for 16GB + 512GB but has better cameras, bluebooth and signal coverage.

For a daily driver, OP15 is a much better phone. For pure gaming, then this.

      • That's true. I don't play games. Thanks for the opinion.
