Flight to Dubai in Four Days and Disruptions - Qantas Points

Hi all, I’ve booked an itinerary using Qantas Points and I’m due to travel in four days. My routing includes flying to Dubai, staying there for 4 days, and then continuing on to Europe.

With the recent situation in Dubai and flight suspensions, I’m not sure what to do with this booking.

My questions are:

Has anyone with a Qantas Points booking involving Dubai in the next week had their flights changed or cancelled?

For Qantas Points bookings, will Qantas or the partner airline usually reroute you via another hub (e.g. Singapore, Bangkok) if Dubai is affected, or do they just refund the points?

Is it better to contact Qantas first, or the partner airline operating the flight?

If you’ve gone through something similar, what exactly did you ask for on the phone to get a good outcome (rerouting, date change, etc.)?

Any advice from people who’ve dealt with disruptions on Qantas Points bookings involving Dubai would be really appreciated.

    Others are probably less risk averse than me, but everytime I think of the risks of flying through a region experiencing conflict, I sadly remember the people aboard MH17, killed as a result of Russia - Ukraine fighting. Just not worth the risk IMO

      Qantas Points Plus Pay Bookings are entitled to the same options and conditions as listed above.

      For customers on Frequent Flyer Classic Reward Tickets:
      Qantas Classic Flight Reward tickets cannot be retained in credit. They can be changed or refunded. This must be done via Contact Centres."

      It's good to know that it looks like they have quite a bit of flexibility to try to get the partner to where they were going. I had thought it would be a case of, oh well, too bad.

    if you're flying to Dubai, this must be on Emirates and not a Qantas flight. Given Dubai is their central hub, it's highly unlikely they would reroute via other destinations.

    I can see the flight from Sydney to Dubai is cancelled today and i suspect that will continue for the next few days.

    the most likely outcome would be a cancellation of flight and refund of points. As you have used points to book on a partner carrier, these are highly restrictive and will not allow for a date change. Qantas will just refund and tell you to rebook. I recently went though this process as a Qantas Gold Member.

    While they are cancelling flights, all of the people that paid for their tickets will be unfortunately in front of award bookings to get a seat when flights resume. I don’t like your chances getting on at all. Can’t say if they will rebook you or outright refund points.

    Dubai is going to be out for you IMHO. As for getting to Europe, you could try rerouting via Japan, as Japan Airlines can be booked with Qantas points, or via China (I think China Eastern might be bookable using Qantas points), or via the US using American Airlines.
    Alternatively, if you have Krisflyer points (or Velocity points that can be converted to them), you could try Singpore Airlines.
    Best of luck - you'll need luck I think and also to act quickly.

    Qantas will reroute usually.
    the middle east airlines will just cancel the flights.

    The virgin flight VA1 to Qatar returned to melb yesterday after getting to like Indonesia. But took off from Sydney.

    If i have already booked hotels (non refundable) in say in Budapest Hungary next week but now afraid of our safety, can i do charged back to my credit card provider?

        flight will probably be fine, pilots are (usually) not suicidal and will take the safest route to get you there

        I remember last time i travelled europe during israel/gaza war, the flight took an extra 6 hours so they would not fly over the hot spots

      Insurance would be your only avenue, unlikely that a credit card chargeback would be successful given the hotel has not done anything wrong.

      You can't charge back because you are afraid for your safety. You could if the hotel was closed (and they wouldn't refund). Australia has updated the UAE travel classification to Do not Travel, so your non refundable hotel bookings would most likely be covered by your travel insurance policy providing you bought it before 28 February 2026 (when the classification was changed).

      No - because the hotel is ready, willing and able to provide the accommodation. Make sure you've got good travel insurance instead.
