Shrinkflation Hitting The Humble 2 Minutes Noodles

Sneaky Maggi. They just shaved 3g from each pack. So now the 5 pack weights 345g instead of 360g as it was last time I bought them.

Don't mess with my lazy day food!!!

Hahahaha

Are they only 1min noodles now?

    • +3

      Wouldn't that be wonderful?

    • +4

      Nah 5 seconds less now

    • 1.9166666666min noodles

    • they are 30 second noodles if you have a good induction cooktop.

  • -6

    lazy day food!!!

    you mean barely food

    • +2

It was either that or Bunnings sausage sizzle. It was raining too much today

      • For a lazy lunch, the Bunnings sausage sizzle is better because it has more protein and will keep you fuller for longer.

        • +2

That's if you can be bothered driving 30 minutes

      • Don't they have Ubereats now?

    • +2

      Surprisingly high in calories though.

    • +5

Back in the uni days, it was often the only food.

      • we can vote on you now??
        Do negs = ban?

        • +1

nah when they post as normies, you can vote and downvote, when they post as the powers that be you cannot

    • you mean barely food

A major food group for a lot of uni students.

  • -7

dont buy them, they literally have zero nutritional value

    • +11

Some days you don't need nourishing. Just to take the hunger away for a few minutes.

      • -3

When I said nutritional value, the keyword is "value"

Carbs alone don’t equal nutritional value. Nutritional value in most common sense refers to vitamins, minerals, fibre, protein quality, and overall nutrient density. Instant noodles are mostly refined flour, palm oil, and sodium, so they provide energy but very little micronutrient value.

Now taking away the hunger for a few minutes is pretty bad, it's like eating mcdonalds but you're hungry again 30 minutes later and this is where people start to wonder why they are feeling sluggish, gaining weight etc… cause the quality over a fast fix isn't going to anyone good.

        • +2

I'm at 12% body fat. I think I'll be all right.

        • You must be fun at parties

          • @cktftw: I am actually, ya all can judge me all you want about 2 minute noodles nutritional value.

I am actually right but ya all can't face that fact, if all you want is carbs and 300 calories per packet which doesn't even satisfy a 1yr old then go ahead and eat empty food.

            • @hasher22:

              I am actually,

I am Muppet Detector, how are you going?

(But did you mean to post with your other account?)

        • Carbs alone don’t equal nutritional value.

Did you know that the average human brain requires 125g of carbs per day to maintain minimum function?

No, I don't have a source, but I read it somewhere in a neurobiology book. The science is hypothesising that the brain needs up to 300g of carbs per day for neuroplasticity in a non diseased adult brain to occur and more for infant and adolescent brains or those suffering from TBI.

Working it out in studies to address brain function and recovery in the likes of dementia, alzheimers, stroke recovery, and huntingtons disease.

Instant noodles are mostly refined flour, palm oil, and sodium, so they provide energy but very little micronutrient value.

I acknowledge that there are much better sources of nutrition available but this suggests they're not completely useless in a pinch.

Mix in a can of Tuna and some frozen veg could potentially improve things without a loss of convenience.

There's tinned chicken these days too but => that tasted pretty yuck.

Instant noodles are mostly refined flour, palm oil, and sodium,

A basic noodle dough is 1 cup flour, 1 egg, oil and salt. So much the same. Can bulk it up with quick easy nutrition choices if you want.

When one of my kids was bulking up he inhaled Tuna Pastabake before weight training.

    • +32

I can assure you… Noone eats this for nutritional value

      • I do, is either this or CO2, I think noodles win😜

        • Don't you burn your lips on the tailpipe?

    • +10

Not so black and white, if you're struggling then a quick 2 min meal is better than not eating. And the simple carbs means it's relatively palatable. It's also a good base - you can add some easy protein, frozen vege. I think I added kimchi one time.

        • +6

You forget that most people are eating these for convenience, it is a lot easier and quicker to prepare a packet of noodles.

          • -4

@topherboi: I dunno about that. If you're adding protein and veges, you would be likely cooking it in a pot on the stove. Got to chop up the veges and the meat.

        • +3

If you're struggling to eat and/or are depressed then you're unlikely to be looking after yourself like this. Your girlfriend isn't in this boat if she's able to put it together and think that far ahead. It's a lot more complicated putting that together and will take 10-15 minutes rather than just cooking some noodles.

2 Minute noodles can be a great way to ensure you're at least eating.

          • -2

@DingoBilly: If its taking you more than 2 minutes to make a sandwich with that little ingredients then you must be doing it wrong

        • +5

Bread you can keep in the freezer, but for anyone struggling having fresh produce on hand to make a sandwich is unlikely.
It also requires more in the way of executive functioning - you need to figure out multiple ingredients, if they work together in a sandwich, etc.

Also from your below comment about the vege and meat - what I meant was some leftover protein/tofu/vege in the fridge, or from the freezer (microwave ready). If you are really struggling, you don't want to have to cut stuff up, washing up knives/pots etc.

Different strokes for different folks but I don't judge or decide for people what they should eat. I have a complicated relationship w/ food myself, and demonising options doesn't help me IMO. People can find what works for them.

          • @Liger Zero: My view is 2 min noodles are a poor option but I'm happy to be educated. Better options are tinned fish, microwave eggs, up n go, milk, don't eat:

            1. Tinned tuna (2x/wk limit due to mercury), also wild caught salmon or sardines (no limit)), to be extra healthy go with Springwater and add your own oil, vinegar, other condiments.
            2. Microwave eggs: squirt EV olive oil on plate (probably optional), crack egg or 2 or 3, stab yolk and preferably mix. Microwave about 3 X 30s stirring between. Can add salt (diet salt preferred) for flavour. Method may need to be refined, I've only done it once.
            3. Up n Go
            4. Glass of milk
            5. Don't eat - this is best for anyone overweight. Anyone normal weight - skipping a meal unlikely to harm.
        • But for 2 minutes

Meh, will take you more than 2 minutes to wrestle with the glad wrap roll.

    • Instant noodles do have nutritional value. Carbohydrates, fat, and salt. Those are not zero.

However when it comes to being healthy, yeah, no one considers instant noodles to be good food.

      Mind your manners

    • They can increase your sodium intake to max level. Quite helpful if you are looking for a new kidney.

    • 2 Minutes Noodle x 2 packs + 2 Eggs + a cucumber, a decent meal that gives you carbs, protein and fiber. And it can be ready in 2 mins

  • +2

just check the price of single packets before buying bulk packs, sneaky bastards have been putting up price of packs.
I bought 10 singles the other day, cheaper by 22c

  • +4

Look at all the posh people who don't buy the homebrand/budget two minute noodles. They're like $2 for a 5 pack v the Maggi $5, aren't they?

    • +1

The Woolworths homebrand instant noodles are genuinely inedible, I'd rather pay double for Maggi if we're shopping there.

Coles is pretty good, Aldi is edible too, just Woolworths tastes like someone took old Rattan furniture and covered it in stale rat piss.

      • Woolworths tastes like someone took old Rattan furniture and covered it in stale rat piss
      • Woolworths tastes like someone took old Rattan furniture and covered it in stale rat piss.

Probably less nutritional value in that. Could also be harmful, so be careful, eh?

        • Lots of fibre though

Some major Universities have done multi year research, supported by extensive Federal funds , and found they "can be" very nutritious, especially when mixed with real food 🤔

    • +2

      a) link?

      b) is that because the "real food" adds nutritional value?

  • +3

Ditch them and go for real instant noodles instead from your local asian supermarket.. They're even worse for you, but taste much better. And if you get the ones with the "once were" veggies in it, then you can kid yourself that some ingredients used to have nutritional value at some point in the past.

  • +1

The 5 pack always varied in size depending on the flavour. Are you comparing like with like?

    • +1

A quick check at woolies for instant noodles (apparently two minute noodles is a Maggie trademark thing - who knew?)

Here, I did the sums so that others didn't have to :)
Their home brandy one chicken 85g pkt 5 pkts for $2

A few other brands until you get to Maggi
      Beef @ 74g pkt (in pkt 12 for $9 - 75c pkt)
      Fusion @ 73g pkt (in pkt 12 for $9).
      Chicken @ 72g pkt (pkt 12 for $9)

      Then into the 5 pkt

      Spicy chicken @76g (5 pkt for $5 - $1 pkt) - 380g
      Beef @ 74g - 370g
      Oriental @ 74g - 370g
      Chicken @ 72g - 360g

Then the whole grain varieties starting at 69 g

So now the 5 pack weights 345g instead of 360g as it was last time I bought them.

Ohhhh, looks like woolies online pics haven't caught up yet…

      • That may be it. I think you got to the bottom of the issue.

When we buy them we get the wholegrain ones b but the packets felt and looked tiny.

So I may have been talking rubbish. Although looking at the photos online. It could be worse. It could be 335gr per 5 packs as some of those.

        • I think you got to the bottom of the issue

@Wiadro is getting to the bottom of the issue over in the coffee thread.

For the interest of completion in the great noodle heist

At Woolworths, they have the Maggi Two Minute Noodles

          Wholegrain Chicken Flavour 5 pack @ 345g = 67g per packet $5 or $1 per 67g serve.

NUTRITION PER 67g SERVE (presumably including the flavour sachet).

          960kj or 230 calories
          7.3g Protein (11%DI)
          45.2g Carbs (15%DI)
          2.5g Fibre (8% DI)
          1.3g Total fat (1% DI)
          800mg Sodium (35% DI) <= Yikes!

          No other flavours available

But 60g Instant Noodle Cups are on SPECIAL

          30% off was $2.50. Now $1.75

*Chicken & Oriental are both 60g. Beef are only 58g.

Wonder why they switched that up?

In packet form, Beef packs are 2g heavier than Chicken. But in cup form the Beff packs are 2g lighter than Chicken.

Mysteries of life and the things you learn, eh?
          1.3g Sugar
