KFC: Foreign Glove Finger End in Slider

My friend found a glove finger end in their KFC slider.
They have filled out the complaint form and taken a photo of the finger glove end, is that about all they should do?
They also asked for extra lettuce on their burgers, which they got, but the burgers were poorly package and the lettuce ended up everywhere inside the brown bag, must have ticked off a worker having a bad day…
The order was an online drive thru order, so they noticed all this when they got home.

Here is the photo:

03/3 edit:
Close to 24 hours and my friend has not received any follow up from KFC yet.
I will update the post if anything ends up happening.
Otherwise thanks for the informative posts and a few laughs everyone. (:

6/03 edit:
My friend was contacted by a representative of KFC and after going over the details and making sure everything checked out and was factual, my friend was given a full refund and also was given credit to their account.
Great to see and know KFC take customer complaints seriously and do follow up on them.
Well done KFC.
Great outcome.

    Pic or it didn't happen…

    • +2

Will upload a pic once my friend hears back from KFC support and if they offer resolution or not.
Not sure if there are any legal defamation issues with this stuff that I need to be careful of?

      • -2

I wouldn't worry about any of that.

Only reason to hold onto the pic is to convince KFC to sort your mate out with free KFC for a year otherwise news.com.au gets a copy of the photo and story.

        • +3

Haha my friend will probably get offered a free large chips if they are lucky.
I'll go ask them for the pic.

        • news.com.au is already onto it - they've got the OzBargain RSS straight into their AI… 🤯

Not sure if there are any legal defamation issues with this stuff that I need to be careful of?

Stick to facts. Even better if you have proof ("my mate told me" isn't a defence if your mate was mistaken) and you should be fine. Whilst your story may amount to a claim of defamation, "truth" is a valid defence.

        • -4

Which KFC worker is ponying up a minimum of $50,000 to progress a defamation action? I swear to God, everyone who's never dealt with the law thinks you can just go down to the High Court and argue about their parking ticket.

          • +1

            @Daabido:

Which KFC worker is ponying up a minimum of $50,000 to progress a defamation action?

If it got up, it would be the company progressing a defamation claim. The individual worker has not been publicly identified doh.

swear to God, everyone who's never dealt with the law thinks you can just go down to the High Court and argue about their parking ticket.

If that's targeted at me, back off. I merely responded to the OP's concern.

Bruce Lehrmann took on Network Ten and journalist Lisa Wilkinson in 2024 for a defamation claim (which he spectacularly lost - so far). He's on the line for at least $2million so far just for his lawyer fees (and he's appealing the decision, so there may be more).

So, sometimes the little guy does go for defamation claims, particularly when they're initially pro bono or no win no pay.

          • +1

@Daabido: Need not even be an official claim. Plenty have approached review hosting sites (including eBay feedback) to have comments removed because they are defamatory.

If they're factual, decreases chance of any reviews being deleted.

      • +1

The photo means nothing as it was taken when they got home.
People "plant" stuff like this all the time and try it on with KFC.

  • -1

    i wanna see the pic.
maybe it was the forbidden glove

    • its a blue glove, who knows where that ended up from…

  • +11

How do they know it was a foreign glove? Maybe it was an Aussie glove?

  • Post it on Reddit with pic so News Corp can steal it.

    • Man orders KFC slider. You'll never guess what he found next.

  • +6

In this time of global upheaval, my condolences to your friend.

    • Thankyou…they may never recover or be the same from this life altering event.

  • +7

Bit racist to assume it was a foreign glove.

    • It was probably causing the housing shortage too!

  • +5

Might have been an OzBargainers condom

    • +3

They got me a zinger burger I was very suspicious of the mayo sauce….

Ha! I understood that reference. I'll upvote to balance out the neg.

they also asked for extra lettuce

    Said no one ever

  • My friend found a glove finger end in their KFC slider.

They should share it in this thread: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/944204

    • +1

      That would be funny.

Perhaps my friend could even return the glove finger end back to the worker and take a photo with them and then it could turn into a feel good story about a KFC slider and burger stuffer being made whole again.

  • Jeez, people complain when they get shortchanged, but this dude is complaining about getting something extra, for free! Some people are never happy…

On a serious note, an awful thing to have happened. Enough to make your insides go all queasy and maybe even throw up in your mouth a little.

Get mate to save glove/preserve evidence but also sus out if there is any blood in it. If it is the finger off a glove that was used to protect a wound, more bargaining power for your mate.

Tell your mate not to surrender possession of that glove unless well documented and receipted I guess. If mate is thinking about pursuing a legal negligence windfall, get legal advice (those no win no pay guys may even pick up on this if the proof can be verified and the smell a reasonable payday for minimal work). The legal will tell you about handling the evidence and when/if you need to make it available to somebody, who that is and when etc.

Sucks that it happened, but every now and then it just does.

If the glove has no fluids in it, they should definitely be replacing the whole order. A great outcome would be if they comped the meal/order and replaced it with a fresh one and maybe tossed in a few extras as a gesture of good will.

Sucks it was a drive through order as your mate will likely be out the fuel costs for dealing with this vs dine in where it could be instantly rectified.

Just a word of caution, it is a common ploy in the food industry for customers to plant their own foreign objects into their meals as a way to get discounts or freebies. I'm not saying your mate did this at all, but there will definitely be people thinking it, so photograph the crap out of everything, document everything, try not to touch the glove too much and do what you can to preserve any evidence - just in case.

As for further legal recourse, The Snail in a Bottle Case is the landmark negligence case that started it all.

My take, unlikely any further remedy than what I suggested above as there is very little, if any, harm caused.

As for defamation, as long as you keep your statements to truth that you can actually prove, you should have nothing to worry about on that front, simply for telling your story.

TLDR - sucks that it happened, but it happens more than you realise across the industry (sometimes by accident and some times on purpose, by both sides) and on this occasion I very much doubt there is any kind of windfall much more than a few freebies at most.

They really don't care much how many people you tell (companies this big) because there will always be people to replace any that do boycott and the other giant chains are just as susceptible. Of course, they would prefer that it didn't happen and prefer even more that you didn't find out.

It was your mate's lucky day that he found the glove as it hopefully warned him not to eat the contents (which hopefully is not inside out or has traces of blood). Just imagine how many times this happens (ever wondered why hospitality bandaids are bright blue?) and they catch it before they serve it and just pluck that used bandaid, fingernail, bandage or glove fragment out of your food, serve it as if nothing happened and you eat it up without ever knowing it was there.

EDIT ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL THAT IT IS REPORTED (I hope it didn't seem like I was discouraging this), as your friend is going, even if no phenomenal windfall is likely. It gives the companies a wake up call for an internal review to promote more or better training for their staff moving forward and to just remind them that people are watching and they need to do better :)

    • +2

Thankyou for your in depth reply.
My friend has put the piece of glove aside and luckily no visible traces of blood that they could see.
Its about half the size of the slider and was clearly visible my friend said when they unwrapped the slider to eat it, which made me think it was deliberately put in there as a nasty screw you from the worker for some reason (maybe the extra lettuce upset them?)

My friend also said they had to wait a while for the order, which was unusual.
My friends put in a complaint by filling out a form on the KFC website, and has also stated they can provide photo evidence.

I did think to myself that KFC support will possibly write it off as a scam attempt, but all my friend wants is a refund and a meal replacement, they are not interested in pursuing anything legal from what they told me.

      • They will know what their gloves look like, so that would likely go a long way to convince them.

Fingers crossed that they do the right thing without any pushback.

        • +1

          Fingies crossed.

If they do the right thing, I will update this thread praising KFC and it will be a good little bit of PR for them.

          • @CheapCookie: smirk

I just realised I said "fingers crossed" giggle about a good outcome for finding a finger of a glove in your food.

Had I have been jv, I would have had the quick wit to do that intentionally and make it all pretty with a bit of bold text.

  • When I first read this title my mind went to a bad place

    • Did it stay there for a while and have fun? Make any friends?

  • What outcome is your friend seeking from KFC?

This will determine your next step

    • They are after a refund and a meal replacement….although I thought to myself a meal replacement from the same KFC might not be a good idea /:

      • -1

        So they're after free food

        • -1

No, they're seeking rectification for food they had paid for which did not meet the standards of a reasonable person. The refund is for the inconvenience. Their time is not free.

      • +1

Decent odds when you think about it.

Return there and you have 9/10 chance of getting free extra glove fingers.

Go somewhere else and you likely have 10/10 chances.

A couple of years back I had breakfast cereal with a couple of plastic fragments in it.
    I notified https://www.foodstandards.gov.au/consumer/prevention-of-food…
(or possibly the Vic version of https://www.foodauthority.nsw.gov.au/help/complaints-about-f…)
and once they received the photos they gave strict instructions not to give it to the supplier and then actually sent someone to my house to collect them.

So it's possibly worth your time to let them know too.

    • Did you end up getting any compensation from that incident?

      • +1

Did you end up getting any compensation from that incident?

Wasn't looking for compensation - just trying to make sure nobody else encountered the same issue. (but the company involved did send a nicely written letter thanking me for letting them know as well as the gov't dept. It was bundled up with a range of their breakfast cereals and I received an invite to tour their production facility).

        • -3

What was the point of all that though if no comp, lol. felt like a waste of time. might as well just stay quiet and save your time.

          • +2

            @mrvaluepack:

What was the point of all that though if no comp, lol. felt like a waste of time. might as well just stay quiet and save your time.

The point, which you seemed to miss, was exactly as I wrote above - highlighting something that may be to someone else's detriment.

Some people try to do the right thing occasionally without needing to be rewarded.

Even though, as I wrote above and you seemed to miss it too, I did receive something for my effort.

            • @Grunntt: Oops sorry, I didnt read properly. You got a bundle of cereals and invitation, cheers!

  • +2

    Finger licking good alright

  • It's on the outside of the packaging, I'm not really seeing the big deal??

If it was on the inside, I'd be concerned that maybe that wing didn't taste like chicken

    • Yes it was in the slider.
And also yes they should have left it in and taken the photo.

  • +2

No one ever asks for extra lettuce.

I call BS on the whole story.

  • -3

I would suggest you tell your friend to contact their local Solicitor before you proceed to make representations on behalf of your friend.

Some of what you have stated can in be written off as there are some inconsistencies with the story.

However, I would state that it is very likely that glove is real because that is not a glove that the normal consumer can purchase from a supermarket or even Aliexpress. It appears to me to be something very unique given its style, transparency and colour. Now whether it was inside the burger or just sitting on the outside of the wrapping needs further analysis.

Did your friend suffer shock? Are there ongoing mental disturbances related to the burger?

Note: These may not be apparent until months after the incident.

    • -3

My friend is the one contacting KFC so I do not represent them.
And the title of my post says slider and I say in the slider not on the slider.
      It was not a burger.
The photo is from when they took the glove finger end out of the slider.
Yes they should have left it in the slider and taken a photo.

I have been monitoring their mental health and supporting them the best I can, trying times indeed.

    • Did your friend suffer shock? Are there ongoing mental disturbances related to the burger?

      Are you suggesting PTSB?

      (Post Traumatic Stress Burger).

  • -4

    So …

Went to KFC (famous for, over the counter, takeaway fried chicken),
    ordered a burger,
    ordered extra lettuce,
    ordered via drive thru,
    opened at destination.

Somehow all this may indicate not a sophisticated foodie

    FFS !!!!

  • Happens, big deal. Let them know, they replace it and let people know to be careful when prepping food.

  • This doesn't make much sense to me.

your friend asked for extra lettuce (do people do this?)
the worker preparing your friend's burger is ticked off by a request for extra lettuce (why this would tick them off is beyond me)
resulting in a shoddily prepared burger and for whatever reason a portion of a plastic glove (why would a portion of a plastic glove be in there, no knife was involved) in the burger

  • +4

Definitely report it. This will help prevent it in the future.

Having worked at KFC in the 90s i vaguely recall a policy of using company provided bandaids etc so it was easier to identify fake claims as some people made stuff up.

If i was your friend, I'd expect a full refund, and a personal call from the store manager within 48 hours with an apology.

If he's expecting free kfc for life, I can recommend a dietician or cardiologist, as he'll need both.

And your friend can exercise his right not to purchase from them again.

Anything more than this is over the top, but we do live in a sociey where eveyone wants to blame everyone else, but most of the time its a 16yo preparing the food and they need to be educated not crucified.

  • +2

    Get over it

  • Here you go I googled it for you. Shame on KFC not responding to a customer complaint like that!

    Reporting the Contamination

Contact the Restaurant: Inform the restaurant manager about the issue to prevent others from getting sick.

Report to Local Authorities: Contact your local council or city health department, particularly the Environmental Health Officer. They investigate complaints and can inspect the premises.

Report to Food Safety Agencies: For more serious incidents or to escalate complaints, report to state or national food authorities, such as the FSANZ in Australia.

  • Is your friend a TA? Maybe staff were just raising awareness of his character.

  • I’d be asking: where is the half-finger that was inside the glove? Glove finger looks to have been traumatically detached from the rest of the glove, and I can’t help but wonder where the actual finger has gone. Hopefully they saved it to reattach later

  • How did they miss that glove when it's a bright blue colour?

And then his guy found a glove in his pizza.

    https://x.com/i/status/2028697878617600037

  • +2

To clarify, was the foreign glove finger in your friend, or the kfc slider.

    • and be exact, which part of his friend?

  • Some chains, such as Domino's in Australia and New Zealand, use specialized AI camera technology ("DOM Pizza Checker") placed directly over pizza-making stations to monitor food quality, toppings, and temperature.

So quite possible KFC could have cctv in the kitchen prep area.

  • +1

    "lettuce ended up everywhere"

Is this your first fast food order?

  • You would be shocked by what you don't see.

Years ago my friend had a live cockroach in his sumo salad at Pitt St mall. When he complained they threw the refund on the counter and walked off. Not even an apology but we were on our lunch break so didn't have time to ruin the business.

    • Similar thing happened with a colleague at a very popular Chinese takeaway at Wynyard. Got a bundle of plastic wrap in a ball of pho - it was buried deep under layer of sliced of beef. Brought back to the counter and they grabbed the bowl and literally threw the cash back to her - while there was a line of people waited for their orders right there saw everything.

      • Wait what chinese takeaway selling pho?

  • How do you tell the difference between foreign gloves and domestic gloves?

  • KFC customer service isn't as good as Maccas.
