I was looking for flights to Hong Kong and stumbled upon this. Not sure if its a deal or if it is Philippine Airlines regular pricing, but ~~$2600 for business class MEL - HKG return seems like a pretty good bargain, seeing as other carriers like Qantas or Cathay charge $5k+ for direct flights and Singapore Airlines charge $4.7k+ with a stopover. I know its not comparing apples to apples, but Philippine Airlines use the same Vantage XL seat as Qantas on their A330 service from Melbourne to Manila (unless you are unlucky and they swap it our for the old 2-2-2 A330 configuration), and a chance of getting a good business class seat on the Manila to Hong Kong route if they fly their A350 (but more likely they will use a A321). So check the seatmaps when you book!

Plenty of travel dates, I have used 1/9/2026 depart and 30/9/2026 return as my example.
Also flights from Perth from $2939 (only 3 flights a week) and Brisbane from $3530

their A350 biz class was amazing!

Sorry, what do you mean by that not being one ticket?

        • Even if you book it together with the same airline? That seems unusual.

@SetTheFaqUp: I've booked and I'll let you know my experience in a few months time ;)
Out of curiosity, what is the source of your information? I did PAL a few years ago MEL-Tokyo via Manila, and I didn't have to check in again at Manila Airport…

@SetTheFaqUp: "Booking the ticket via an offshore online website will essentialy book you onto two flights."
I'm not sure what you mean by this… I've booked using trip.com which was one of the options skyscanner gave. It was a smooth process, got a single e-ticket and airline booking reference (PNR) for the entire journey (i.e 4x flights), all within a few minutes of paying.

            • @SetTheFaqUp: Geeze relax dude. Hyper defensive over nothing, I was simply asking.

              • @Dandaman21: Will remove my comments. Wasn't meant to be personal. Seen too many got caught out.

Not sure you still have to pick up your luggage, open it for security check and recheck-in your luggage again at Manila.
If that the case then 2 hours transit might not be enough.

thought they would have improved by now but looks like I was wrong.

    • I did PAL Melbourne to Tokyo (via Manila) a few years ago, there was no need to re-check luggage then. And according to their help page since its international to international, I see no reason why they wouldn't do it now… (https://www.philippineairlines.com/au/en/before-you-fly/at-t…)

Avoid PA like the plague. Worst non-budget airline ever flown on. Flights cancelled, hours of delays. Manilla airport is literally considered the worst in the world. 3 customs checks inside the airport. Check in system is entirely paper based. Chaos.

Subway and starbucks are the only recognisable food places there.

Jollobys is not even inside the airport. Have to go through immigration twice to even try that.

But you don't need to check in at Manila, you would have already done that at an Australian airport or Hong Kong. You don't even need to leave the airport and clear customs and immigration if you don't want to. You have access to their business class lounge (which I admit is a bit meh but better than nothing) or other lounges if you have priority pass like most OB would have.

well I they didn't give me the boarding pass for the second leg in Australia and had to mill around a desk for an hour which was chaos. Customs checked everyone's hand luggage upon arrival and again during departure. Also had to get a stamp after being sent to the guts of the airport with everyone else where they made us watch them go through checked luggage in no apparent order… nightmare.

Don't forget PANADOL for your headache while at Manila Airport.

    • why panadol, what am i missing?

      • It’s gotten a little better over the years, but still not very smooth or efficient yet.

  • Manila has 4 terminals and none are connected airside. Generally you will not need to clear immigration and customs if your flights are on one ticket, your bags are checked through, and your transfer stays airside i.e., the next flight is from the same terminal. Philippine Airlines (PAL) operates its international flights out of NAIA Terminal 1 so assuming the flights are ontime, a two hour transit should be OK if the above conditions are satisfied.

  • Avoid Manila airport like the plague. Dirty, hot and stinky.

    Don't listen to the nay-sayers.

Phillipines Airlines were the most on time Asia airline in 2025, reference : https://www.timeout.com/australia/news/revealed-the-10-most-…

Cebu Pacific can be a different story but mainly for domestic flights. Flew BKK to CLK last week and it landed half an hour early.

Just booked one way MNL to MEL business class next week for $1480, was $2265 yesterday.

The airport can be a bit chaotic but has improved immensely over the last 4 or 5 years.

    • Their J is not bad. Their crews are very friendly and bubbly - bit like most Filipinos.

the country is a very poor condition from a macro point of view, and super corrupted!

some patch of Manila like Makati and Bay area is ok, and cheap adult activity in Angle City, should be safe if you are non Asian.

For Asians, stay away from Asean countries, except Singapore. Philippines is no no! I been there twice and second time by myself. I was so lucky and still thanking my god looking over me.

Swear not going back ever since shit like this happened:
