Be very careful on using ebay postage label.

I had done it successfully for past few years but 3 months ago, i got a bill for about 600 citing uncorrect dimension and weight going back as much as one year.

I, for one, is extremely careful while mentioning the dimensions and weight since my local post office is pretty strict on these

Now, after these many months,i do not have any evidences to prove this and can only pay and move on with my life. I did however tried contacting ebay where they said contact auspost and vice versa.

    Never using ebay postage again

      that is very scammy.

    • I've heard this a few times, do you use an Aus Post owned store, or one of the dodgy local ones? Maybe they are skimming a bit extra wherever they can if it's a dodgy one.

      • No, i believe its auspost owned store. All senior employees there.

      • It has nothing to do with the store.

All parcels are measured and weighed at distribution and sorting centres. Any discrepancies are then charged to the account used to send the parcels.

I had something similar, not that bad but about $10. I now go the max dimensions for the price bracket just to be safe. You can get a discount on the label, but if they slightly adjust then it’s at full price. It’s scummy, I agree, so make it work for you!

    • Same, had this happen three times now. Emailed auspost support for a refund immediately and that worked luckily.

      • how you contacted Auspost as you bought the label from third party i.e. ebay?

    • This happened to me like 2 months ago too. I'm also very careful when measuring. Scumbags.

      • I knew a guy who had a camera setup to record birds-eye view over his desk whenever he does packing and shipping. Seems over the top, but he's never had a fine / claim for damaged parcel since.

Between stories like this, the huge fees for selling, and the complete stop of free/reduced FVF promos, makes you wonder why anyone would bother selling anything privately on eBay anymore.

What are eBay Australia doing? Pole position as a second hand marketplace for so many years and yet look at the state of it now.

      • "makes you wonder why anyone would bother selling anything privately on eBay anymore."

Well that's just it, they have made the decision that they don't want these people so have priced them out / ensured they pay absurd amounts if they really insist on using it.

I gave up years ago, not worth it at all. Used to run a 6 figure business on there too.

        • Same, I've racked up $250K (US dollars) in sales since I opened up my eBay account waaaaay back in 2004 but the lack of FVF promos in the last few years meant I switched all my private sales entirely to Facebook Marketplace which has been going surprisingly well. Sure, I could get a bit more on the sale price if I sold the same items through eBay but not having to deal with the hassle of returns, selling fees and postage costs on Marketplace more than makes up for it.

          • @merajaan: Exactly my experience. I've completely shifted sales to Facebook marketplace. The eBay commission is just to high and I don't like the power imbalance between seller and buyer. As a buyer you are always right.
On marketplace you come in person test the stuff and take it or not. Everybody knows the rules. And with payid I feel like it got even better. You immediately get the money, no guessing. Cash is fine too, but cash is trash and you have to bring it to the bank to then use it in a digital way anyways.

I have always ignored these bills

That's wild! I've sold about 300+ items in the last few years and never had anything like this happen

    • How did you get the bill ? In my eBay account and payments?

      • Yes

  • didn't see. targeted or must be plus?

I remember the distant glory days where FVF was around 3.75% and Paypal hadn't been invented yet / only Americans could use it.

      • i remember the early days of ebay to, so many bargains to be had and decent sitewide discounts also!

        • I agree. The old ebay was great. I hate navagating the new account/seller pages these days too

Yeah, it's ridiculous. Especially for items worth more than a few hundred. What I don't get, and it's the same with Uber, is why ebay fees need to scale up along with the cost of the item. It's not like it takes ebay more effort to sell an item that is $100 vs $1000. For a $1000 sale it's over $100 in fees. Like what?!

    • I remember back in the early days paying via money order or cheque.

i remember back in the early, early days bartering with shells and other trinkets

  • I got this also this week.
Had no idea until I went to buy auspost label thru ebay …

    • same here, I guess it was a nice surprise

  • I had move on to open auspost business acc, they have tiers and sometime discount, the eBay managed post is dodgy af.

  • Sold something for 55 inclusive of postage and got paid out $47 after the free postage label. Not a bad deal.

But yes, bad experience in the past with the postage label charges in hindsight.

  • can u just charge the buyer postage, then they calculate it all?

  • Sendle closed down

  • Thanks! Sold something today and surprise! Free post :)
