YouTube Premium Lite - Now Includes "Background Play" and "Downloads" (*both Previously Not Included) $8.99 Per Month @ YouTube

933

posting as a deal just to try reach more users. technically you are getting more than before but if Mods think it's better in forums they can move it anyway.

recent announcement I read the article a week ago. doesn't seem to be mentioned here yet.

also you will not find the Premium Lite option in the membership area on YouTube. for someone I know they only saw Premium and Family options. first cancel your sub, then click the "Join premium" button in the link of post. it will take you to the Lite page where you can click to signup to Lite.

what you get:

✔ Ad free content (except certain music videos/shorts and when you search or browse.)
✔ Background Play (PiP, afaik PiP = Background Play) and Downloads (except certain music videos/shortsand when you search or browse.)

what you don't get:

❌ does not include Ad free YouTube Music Premium
❌ or additional features such as continue watching, Jump ahead, queuing, or high quality audio and video, and more (Afterparties & live chat, Smart device integration, Smart downloads, Co-Watch with Google Meet, Special offers and early access to new features).

also fyi. I'm not subbed and I never got a ad on the shorts I watch. not sure if it depends on the content, I'm not watching "tiktok ad" type content where a person is talking about a product.

  • Am I doing something wrong its coming up as $11.99?

    • +4

did you cancel your Premium sub first like I typed in the post? I signed up for someone else yesterday and it clearly showed billed A$8.99.

or are you doing it on device? I heard many people get higher sub prices when tapping to sub on device. if you do it on PC browser it's cheaper.

      apple tax apparently

  • Thanks, o hope it works.. I'm sick of paying $17 per month

    • +25

      Username does not check out.

Don't get sick. There are ways of paying $0.

  • Seems more expensive than premium two-person for ₹289/month

just give us more info bud

India iTunes account, Amazon India iTunes gift cards, subscribe through AppStore.

        I’ve said too much ….

        • Lol do you get Bollywood music recommendations?

          • +4

@montorola: I've got the same setup, you don't get Indian recommendations if you have a separate account as the 'household manager' and your regular account using a family slot. Probably good to do regardless in case it gets banned or something.

            • +1

@Jolakot: Can vouch that this works.

I used to use my day to day account for my India subscription, and I used to get Bollywood recommendations in YT music even though I've never listened to Bollywood music before.

I have a seperate account which is now the household manager and moved my primary account back to Australia and my music algo returned to "normal"

          • +1

@montorola: Not sure if legit question or not but no. You can still watch Youtube without a VPN.

          • +2

@montorola: I did get Bollywood music recommendations initially when I first sign up years ago, and that quickly fade away as I searched/listened/pressed like on songs of my own preference.

          • @montorola: Member since 2010 and you still don’t know how it works?
            It’s an ozbargain staple.

          • @montorola: There should be an "Improve your music recommendations" option in the YouTube Music settings and when you choose some western artists it fixes everything

        • I was using the same for about 6 months. Just last month they caught on and ended my sub. Just a matter of time. Previously I ran the Argentina pricing for a couple years. Back to revanced for me though it's annoying that some songs on YouTube music are locked away. But I shouldn't be listening to too much drake anyway hahahaha A MINOOOR

        • I don't think this works anymore. Turns out I need to enter a UPI in my India itunes account now. :(

          • @sydneysyd: Just need to reload credit onto the account 1st. Mine only asks for a UPI if I try to renew the family sub without credit already on the account.

Why did someone neg? Cyclone doesn’t give any info on the country to use

    • i thought they closed this down by automatically cancelling premium subs for those that log in from a different country?

      • Worked for a couple of years now.

      • Can confirm it still works

  • +13

Continue watching is a premium feature?! My god the day I stop being able to subscribe through India…

    • +2

      You and me both!

      • +11

Maybe something to do with one of the richest companies in the world who sell your data and make a fortune doing it originally providing a service as standard that now they make it un-necessarily obnoxious to not pay by spamming you with ads.

        • -7

You’re still using their services no? The rest is redundant.

      • +1

It's not about being free, it's about reasonable pricing. But when there is no reasonable priced option then 'free' becomes the sensible choice.

        • It's not about being free, it's about reasonable pricing.

The double standard is so funny to me. What is reasonable pricing for hosting all the videos of the world to you? $4 a month?

          • -1

@nikoris: With 2 billion+ users, probably. But when you consider they themselves pay those content providers a pittance of the money they make, and that they are happy to accept a much lower subscription from some countries, it's google who has the double standards.

            • -1

@soob: So, everyone in the world should make less profit for you to buy, right? RIGHT?
Some you are so funny to deal with, echo chamber mentality.
I bet you think everything is expensive, Netlix, water, electricity, everything should be cheaper right? goh

  • +10

Ozbargainer should be using Turkey account for subscription

    • +7

Ozbargainer should be using revanced and smarttube.

      • +1

        This is the way

        • What? No idea what you are on about mate.
It's exactly the same as using the original app with the added bonus of being able to customise it to add/remove features.

            • +1

@G-Shock: Care to share what the actual difference is between this so-called old version and the new version because I just compared the two and apart from the bottom menu icons looking slightly different, I'm struggling to find any major difference.

Didn't realise people care that much about how Youtube app looks when the majority of the time you are just watching videos. LMAO

                • +1

@G-Shock: Ah, the good old "security vulnerability" excuse.

Sure, whatever floats your boat :)

                  • -1

@keejoonc: Yeah its as if he thinks security vulnerabilities aren't introduced in newer versions lol

      • what about on phone?

        • uh, revanced?

        • Use Morphed. It's basically revanced but with real updates and easier install.

      • Do you also get irritated by a YT link or embedded YT sending you to YT instead of Smartube? Any tips to get around that will be gratefully received.

        • +1

You can address this by changing the "Set as Default" setting for the YT revanced app. Under supportged web addresses, enable all options.

  • +1

Been on premium lite for a year or two now since my student premium finished and it’s great! I did notice about 2 months ago that background play started to work on it but I thought that was a glitch lol

  • +28

how is that a deal ?
You still get ads in half the content (music, shorts, etc)
paying $9/mth for some ads, is like paying $9/mth for SBS.

    • +17

I'm surprised people are even paying for yt lmao

      • +16

Seriously, anyone reading this download brave browser and save your money for KFC

        • +10

Or a good browser + uBlock Origin

          • +8

@ldd-mn: Or Vanced + Smart tube

              • +3

@BeauKilla: Why? Google already has enough money plus all my details lol

              • +3

@BeauKilla: Google profits by advertising to people, and now they're charging people to stop seeing ads.

              • +4

@BeauKilla: Doing a quick search through your previous comments for the word "pirate" .. you have a very glass house.

        • -2

i'm sorry but 8.99 is barely a dent for something I use almost every single day, if you dont wanna pay for it then dont, no need to brag about it

          • -1

@Freestyle: Agreed, neggers go out of their way to save $80 in a year then go out and drink $100 every wekend

            • -1

@Laziofogna: They spend $200 on hairdryers and then cry about $9 a month, freaking cookers

        • +4

          Two words: re•vanced

(unless you're on iOS, which indicates the disease runs much deeper)

            • +1

@G-Shock: RVX is awesome — most customisable. And SponsorBlock on all of them is a godsend!

        • +2

What's shit about taking a minute to patch an APK in Revanced Manager on mobile?

          • +2

@relteran: I guess some people struggle with basic stuff you can do on your phone these days.

            • @keejoonc: What's your clever workaround for kayo?

              • @G-Shock: I don't watch Kayo.

                • @keejoonc: Ofc you don't.
                  All good 👍

                  • +1

@G-Shock: Each to their own but paying that much just to watch a few sports isn't my thing. You do you.

Lol love how you unpublished your popular comments.

                    • @keejoonc: Got a deal $1 for a month.

No doubt you pay a lot just to play moron computer games..

True, it's not worth getting sucked in to arguing.

                      • @G-Shock: For a month? You make me laugh bro. Is that supposed to be a brag? Thought you were saying $1 for lifetime 😂
Take a chill pill. Posting that comment at that hour of the morning is concerning 😆

Since you are so interested in my gaming life, I'm happy to report i don't play "moron video games". I only play normal type video games and more importantly I don't pay, which should make you very happy 🤣

Why did you unpublish your comments?

                        • @keejoonc: Correct just one month, can decide after that.
It's a pretty good deal they charge $46 now.

Yeah casual gaming is alright. Lot of freebies on here. The point was people can justify spending money on what suits them, no one cops criticism for spending a lot on gfx cards lol.

                          Because it's pointless.

What would be the best low maintenance set and forget option for youtube on LG webos TV? Mostly for youtube kids.

I'll just need to look into options for youtube music backgrpund playing on my phone for when im at work. Cant justify paying for yt and also can't deal with ads, first world problems.

        • +2

Smart tube can be installed but you'll need a developer account which is a little annoying but worth it. One and done (the updates are run within the app itself).

    • +4

I'm a heavy YT user but don't touch shorts and barely if ever touch music. Going from $17 to $9 seems like a deal to me?

      • Spot on. This is a deal, you just have to fit the demographic.

  • -2

What do they mean by high quality video?, do they mean 4K or 1440p?, as I watch YouTube on my 65 inch. I kind of need 4k…

    • +4

What do they mean by high quality video?

logged back in because I htink I know the answer.

I use YouTube without sub, and I can still get 1080p 60 and 4K when it's available. I remember reading somewhere, on Premium (not Lite) there is an additional option (when available on the video) for "High bitrate/quality video". it has nothing to do with the resolution, but there is meant to be more detail in the video compared to the regular bitrate video.

      hope this helps answer.

  • +2

I'm glad it's posted here, for me it's a deal as I'm paying less for something I want. I had no idea about YouTube Lite and especially not that I had to subscribe via desktop for the $8.99 price.

  • +11

Just watch youtube through Brave browser for free!?

    Background play included

    • +10

This (and SmartTube for your Android TV). Total cost $0.

      • Will look into SmartTube, thanks.

    • Yes, i'm running Adguard which kills the ads and has background play. It's really good for stopping tracking on social media, websites and many other decent things like disabling Windows telemetry. stripping tracking parameters from urls etc too.

    • Will do this on my iPhone thanks

  • +4

    I am good with morphe

    • Is this the new revanced?

      • +2

        Yes

  • Ad-free content, apart from when you “search or browse”? Could someone explain to me how you get around searching or browsing?

    • +2

it's non video ad banners in the search results, as you scroll before tapping a video to play, the results. or for browse, in the suggested videos on the right. does that make sense?

I see them all the time because I have never subbed, they are not intrusive and they have been made easy to spot (unlike e.g. reddit ads). if you are already on Premium you probably never see them.

      • Thanks, that does make sense, I’ve never subscribed before.

  • +4

Interesting, I think I'll just continue using revanced

  • +6

OpenTune (YT Music) + Literally any Revanced/YT fork (YT) costs nothing if you aren't worried about sailing the seas

    • +2

What if you need it for your tv

      • Personal choice, but I find an Android set top box is better than whatever smart TV offerings there are out there. I've been able to side load apps without any issue. That might become an issue in September (?) when Google tighten up the developer requirements though.
