CBA. They have been on a few Fairfax news headlines of late.

I have a Samsung Frame and I would never buy it again. The software is maddening. The UX is confused and makes it hard to do what you want. If you watch the Samsung digital channels it keeps putting up a Samsung message every time you change channels which you need to click through twice to remove their overlay. They also keep recommending SkyNews to me which exposes the fact that Samsung sells access to their customers.

I think their contempt for customers is also seen in their implementation of ACR which stands for Automatic Content Recognition. A study of ACR published last year, says that ACR is “like someone has installed a camera 24-7 in your living room.”

When you first set up a TV, you probably agreed to enable ACR. The software takes a screenshot of whatever content you watch, identifies it, and sends that info to the TV manufacturer who then sells it.

Here's the kicker. As the NY Times reported:

"ACR takes in everything on your screen, not just TV shows. The built-in ACR software in your TV isn’t just monitoring and reporting on your devotion to Today or even your Netflix binge sessions of Love Is Blind. ACR is capturing anything that appears on your screen, including YouTube videos, personal photos, security or doorbell camera streams, and video or photos you send via Apple AirPlay or Google Cast. ACR can even snag content from other devices connected to your TV by HDMI, including personal laptops, video game consoles, and Blu-ray players.

What manufacturers do with that data is completely out of your hands. “As of now, this data is freely bought and sold in the data broker economy,” said Vekaria. He cautions that data can be used maliciously. A study published in 2024 by the advocacy group Center for Digital Democracy looked at commercial surveillance in the streaming era. The authors cite a number of ways in which personal data harvested by ACR could be used to micro-target people individually, including through personalized pharmaceutical ads or manipulative political ads.

ACR is tenacious. The Center for Digital Democracy’s study found that in the smart TVs they tested (from LG and Samsung), ACR continued to run and capture data even when the smart TV was offline. So even if you disconnect your TV from the internet, should you ever reconnect it to your home’s network, perhaps for firmware updates, it’ll forward saved data to the content-recognition servers as soon as it can ping them. Short of disconnecting your TV, if you want to prevent ACR from sharing your TV viewing, you’ll need to turn it off.

I have 2 of them and have never connected them to the internet, I use an apple tv for media (and load photos on it for the art mode via usb directly).

I agree though, the software is avertising filled garbage. It's such a shame

We have a Hisense Canvas 55" (which we're very happy with) and the first thing we did was block it reporting home. NextDNS is pretty easy to set up, however there are alternatives:

      • Oh snap I got a Hisense too lol
Wanted to change over to Samsung frame but now I’m not sure 😬

    • can't confirm this. had 2 frame models and never had issues or complaints.

    • +2

Couldn’t agree more - worst UI I’ve ever used, laggy too. And Samsung does nothing about it.

    • Can confirm and unfortunately have to agree as an owner of the 65" version. For Android users a Sony running Google TV OS will be a far superior UX/UI even for simple things like Chromecast and YouTube. Samsung is actively building dark patterns in to the UI to increase monetisation opportunities.

    • I became of aware of ACR last year. It looks like all TV's screen capture your content. It can be disabled on my Sony and Samsung Frame. I don't recall if it was opt-in but there is an opt-out.

I don't like the Samsung TV interface but as a painting that's also a TV - I still would buy it again.

    Samsung "The Frame"

"The Frame" - is a $129 extra option

    • The coloured bezel add on. Default comes with a black frame.

Have the 55" up on the wall and the art looks great.
We dont use it to watch TV apart from using Google Streamer apps on the odd occasion when in the kitchen as its a secondary tv and its mostly there for the frame artwork
If planning on using for the above situation go for it, but if sole purpose is to watch TV id say look for something else

    • Really ? It can’t be that bad?? I was thinking of changing this from my Hisense tv and then getting this so it looks good on the wall but yeah we’d be watching it for tv / Netflix etc as it’s our primary tv

      • +2

It's a really low tier panel that won't have a long lifespan because of the thinness, plus it has an aggressive anti-reflective panel that mutes colours

Slight exaggeration but if it's used as a main tv there are far better options

    • +3

      the art looks great

      Does it actually?

I know a few people with various models of the Samsung Frame TV, and I've never found the "art" convincing - it just looks like a TV on a screensaver. I don't think anyone is fooled into thinking it's real art.

Maybe it looks fine if you've only ever seen cheap printed art. Real oil on canvas has a certain depth, texture and definition that can't really be replicated digitally - the pigments and strokes reflect light in a way that's not uniform and unique.

      • i think the majority isn't as arty farty to care. don't think these tv's were meant replace the real deal paintings!

        • Agree. We want one for the bedroom, so we don't have a giant black window to nothing on the wall. Don't need it to look like it was painted by Van Gough himself. Having said that, with all the comments about Samsung operating system and software, might wait for the TCK Nxtframe to go on special

          • @pwnd: oh wow didn't know there was other versions of "frame" thought it was only samsung that did this

curious as to how better it is than samsung?
            saw this https://www.binglee.com.au/products/55-nxtframe-4k-qled-smar…

            • @prankster: Operating system wise, I like the google tv that TCL use.
Image wise, the reviews seem pretty comparable.
I saw the nxtframe displayed at my local JB Hi Fi and liked it overall.
My only negative was, I really liked the one connect box that the Samsung has, as it makes it easier to keep the tv look less messy without having to do a proper through the wall cable install.

      • I bought mine for the art function and I don't use it as it looks unnatural. Real art is better.

      • I think the newer ones with the matte screen are more convincing than the previous glossy panels.

My neighbor thought it was a painting :D

  • Any way to purchase without cba employee?

    • yes, see if other banks price match

You don't have a single friend or family at CBA?

      • +1

        i certainly don't

        • +1

Amongst the workforce of Sydney, the ratio of someone working at CBA is like 1 in 100 so I've never met someone in the CBD that doesn't know someone at CBA..

@Nillionaire: where did you get your data from?..
edit- ah ok i did some maths… say 4.4M employed and say 40,000 is cba.. 40k/4.4m mult 100 = approx 0.8.. ok so its possible…..

is that still the case with AI taking over bank jobs?

            im in melb.

I have a 75" Frame TV, and very happy with it. I use my ASUS router to screen the ADs in my home network, and I never see an ADs pops (except the Youtube as I don't have the Premium account).

You could refer to this link to see it could help you.

  • We have the 85" and have lots of issues. The 10 Plus app is a slow as ever to open, and when it finally does it often asks to sign in which adds a couple of minutes of mucking around before you can actually use it. Tried reinstalling the app, deleting the app, reinstalling etc etc but nothing seems to help. Also, sound is out of sync in some apps. Thinking of buying an Amazon Fire TV Cube to use instead of the apps, not sure if it's the best option though?

    • +2

I have Apple TV, fire cube and google chromecast. In order of preference it is Apple TV, then Fire cube then chrome cast. I’d go Apple TV though. It’s so smooth

  • +1

Confirm it works with other company EPP (perkbox) and was able to purchase the 65" with the posted price.

  • looks like the 55" inch is no more :(
