Likely running due to recent 17e announcement. Given the lack of meaningful difference between the 16e and 17e, seems like a no brainer for anyone in the market for a new budget iPhone.
Not sure how long deal will be available.

CamelCamelCamel. If you put a mag safe case on the back it still works with mag safe chargers (just slower).
Really? Didn’t know that.
no magsafe, worse display and 128gb vs 256 storage. Worth waiting for the next one and getting an officeworks price beat imo
no magsafe
Seriously who cares? My cheap $10 case off eBay has magsafe that works perfectly. Not having the faster charger with magsafe is actually a good thing as it doesn't completely destroy your battery.
worse display
Compared to what, the iPhone 17e? Because the specs for both are exactly the same
128gb vs 256 storage
That's the only benefit - if they were the same price (which they aren't).
FYI - The 17E uses Ceramic Shield 2 for the front glass, which offers three times the scratch resistance of the plain old Ceramic Shield on the iPhone 16E.
new display is stronger

That's not a clear 'worse display' as you tried to claim then.
I've never scratched or crack an iPhone screen going back 15+ years, so unsure what other people are managing to do with their phones that they consider this a necessity.. and 3x more scratch resistance of what exactly…?
I'm genuinely curious what people think about wireless charging.?
I've got wireless charging, but find it more of a hassle than wired charging..
My normie friends probably don't even know their phones have wirelas charging..
What do OzB folks think about it though?
I never use wireless charging, but MagSafe owns.
I have my phone sit in a wireless charging cradle at work.
Find it easier than plugging in plus it sits upright.
Yep. Wireless is 100001x more convinient especially with standing type charger.
I'm in agreement. Almost bought the 16e, but the tougher and better glass screen, double the storage, newer faster chip, newer faster modem, and magsafe are worth the extra $200 to me. Plus, in a few years it will have better resale value.
And 1 year less support down the trsck
Same price at Officeworks and Harvey Norman.
60Hz screen…. yikes.
It's a phone.
that you have to scroll on.
60Hz is gross, use 120+ and you'll never go back, plus even $100 androids have 120Hz now……..
I've had Samsung phones with 120hz for 5 years but I always keep it on 60hz to preserve battery. Yes, 120hz is nice but if it drains the battery then I'll pass, thanks.
@beesider: I've found the difference in battery use minimal. No point having expensive capable hardware and not using it
Depends on the person. I just can't tell the difference, so I run my 120hz devices at 60hz. Great if you can tell the difference, but a decent amount of people cannot.
@Make it so: I have no issue doing that at 60hz and notice no difference doing it at 120hz. I have done blind side by sides and just cannot tell the difference.
@witheredcouch: Not sure I should call you lucky or not.
I can tell the difference between my 120Hz Samsung and my previous 90Hz Pixel.
@Make it so: I feel the same about people that can't notice minute differences in the image quality of a display, sometimes I feel they are missing out, most of the time i feel they are lucky not to notice. I think different eyes just pick up on or prioritise different things. It's why I'd rather game at 30fps with Great image quality than 60fps with good image quality, the quality of an image is more noticeable to me than the refresh rate. Obviously in an ideal world i'd play everything at 60fps, but that's not always possible.
@witheredcouch: I know what you mean. I remember the days where people would watch VCD's, which someone recorded in a cinema from a handycam. I'd refuse to watch, as it would ruin the whole movie experience for me. I know many people who wouldn't care whether they watch in SD or 4k.
I remember I used to have 120Hz switched off on my previous Galaxy S20 FE, because of battery reasons. But when I tried it, I realised it was much easier for me to read text and see images while they were in motion. Impact on battery turned out to be unnoticeable.
How did we ever get by with 50i tvs lol
We didn't scroll them, plus we were excited by the sped up series so everyone had higher voices compared with the NTSC source material.
Sometimes they scrolled themselves ;) the good old vert hold.
60Hz screen…. yikes.
I tried every phone in JB Hifi. The 16e was among the nicest I tried.
I didn't notice any delays switching between apps and using the camera on the 16e, but 90% of the other phones in the store had delays, stuttering, and a few just completely froze.
The refresh rate is a non-issue in my opinion. 16e and 17e are workhouse phones that wont let you down, and will still be blindingly fast in 5 years.
Pro Flagship
Base Flagship
Budget / Midrange
What do you mean yikes? It would be insane for Apple to grant 120hz to the e series when it was formerly exclusive to the Pros and only recently granted to the base..
I'm an Android user. I guess my expectations are different.
$400 not a dollar more
Its actually a pretty good phone, except $800 is hardly budget.
I don't get the love for iPhone over Android, and I have several Apple products.
If you can't afford a regular iPhone, don't worry - you can get a better Android phone for significantly less than this.
I don't really think you can. Sure, the specs will look better, particularly the screen will not be 60Hz.
But every experience I have had with Android says that phone will be near unusable within 2 years. There will be hardware issues, particularly compatibility with other devices because the chips stop being supported and accessories aren't tested with budget phones. Some functionality just won't work any more because QA is not as good. The phone will perform bewilderingly slowly for unknown reasons. Software support is most likely just finishing at the 2 year mark.
If you buy this, it will still work just fine in 5 years time, aside from some battery degredation.
dunno what kind of phones you're buying, $400 Mi Note 3 I bought in 2017 had no problems until 2023 (I dropped it)
This or pixel 10
Pixels are always good for a year, then they turn to shit
Software or hardware?
pov: you've never used an android phone over $200
My next phone/OS will likely be Graphene so curious if it is the hardware.
Maybe you could wait for the Motorola GrapheneOS collab phone, Pixel hardware is really mediocre
$500 should sound about right (even then it's not, but Apple)
Only $200 less than the latest model (17e, $999 with 256GB) and it was $699.99 a few weeks ago.
It's been this price for a few weeks now, and even cheaper at Costco ($699). I grabbed one last month for a family member to replace an ageing Android.
Also available for the same price at Officeworks, JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, Good Guys, Big W etc.
No deal
Is $800 a budget phone?
Budget phone? No, it's midrange priced. Budget iPhone? Yes.

has been $699 and will probably go back to $699 soon
For this price, I expect 256gb. wait till 17e gets shipped. These will go down further
I was considering getting one of these but it seems the base 15 has better specs for a better price?
Depends on what you mean by better specs. 15 has better cameras and magsafe, this doesn’t but has a better chip. If you are considering paying more for the 15 for a basic iphone, you are much better off waiting for the 17e to get shipped.
You will miss out apple intelligence
16e battery lasts longer, but no point in getting it now since 17e…
16e lacks MagSafe if that's a meaningful feature for anyone.
