Botanika Blends 1kg Plant Protein (Apple Pie, Custard Filled Donut, Golden Chai Latte) $34.99 @ ALDI (Special Buys)

220

I've checked a couple more stores since posting and can no longer find them so will mark this post as out of stock. These are extremely popular so you need to be quick.

ALDI Special Buys has these three unique flavours of the 1kg Botanika Blends vegan protein powder. IYKYK.

I believe these are stocked nationally. I've found stock in store in Castle Hill, Coffs Harbour, and Robina. The stock checker isn't accurate.

This is a genuine deal - these are normally around ~$75/kg. They're only this cheap when they're on sale at ALDI. I previously posted their Black Friday deal and it was still not near this cheap.

Available flavours:
- Apple Pie
- Custard Filled Donut
- Golden Chai Latte

Macros:
- Protein content varies slightly by flavour (Chai has the highest).
- Serving size is 40g, which is larger than the typical 30g scoop used by many other protein powders.

I personally enjoy making blueberry protein oats with these. YMMV but I find these easier on the stomach than many alternatives.

  • How does plant protein compare to whey ?

I've seen plant based proteins going for much vheaper.

I assume the whey is worth the benefit Vs the price ?

    • +2

      they're wheeeey better

    • +5

Whey is a fast-absorbing protein source, but not everyone’s stomach handles it well (lactose intolerance, milk sensitivity), and some people avoid it for ethical reasons.

There’s also a wide range of plant proteins available - pea, rice, soy, and various blends. Potein quality varies not only between different sources, but also within a given source depending on things like processing. That's how you end up with WPC and WPI, both being whey but different in quality and a huge jump in price.

Unless you're a serious athlete, ~10% better protein quality isn't really worth worrying about imo. Ultimately, it's about what works for your stomach, taste buds, wallet, etc.

        It's more than a 10% difference.

The 40g serving size isn't a coincidence, it is about the same effectiveness of taking 30g of whey protein.

        So a 33% difference.

From a cost perspective, once you add 33% this then comes out at about the same price as for example Bulk Nutrients whey protein concentrate ($43-49/kg depending on how many you purchase).

But completely agree with everything else you have said.

        • +1

Sorry, the ~10% was referencing WPI and WPC. I can see how I wasn't clear.

But yeah, if we're talking about price, I'd rather pay a bit more for a protein I really enjoy.

If you want the absolute cheapest source of protein, the answer is legumes. Obviously apples and oranges, but just throwing it out there.

      • Thanks for the advice, that's very interesting.

I'm looking at taking small amounts now I've settled into my gym routine.

As long as it's not too much suger I'll give this a try.

    • If you have a reason to use this protein then it's serviceable and you can achieve the same results. But in a vacuum, milk whey is usually the easier choice

I bought the donut and chai. I've only tried the donut so far, and I really like it.

    • I love the doughnut but my partner hates it and prefers the apple pie.

    • We have the apple pie, it's nice but the apple is quite faint so it's mostly just pie crust taste.

It would be nice to eat with apples.

  • +1

I would call this a fair price for plant protein. You can buy pea and soy protein for a lot less than whey.

$75 / 1kg for plant protein is ridiculous. Even the best WPI or casein with a lot more protein/100g is less than that.

    • +1

It's more than just protein per dollar.

      • Unique, delicious flavours
      • 100% natural
      • Mostly organic
      • Pre + probiotics
      • Made in Australia

When Botanika isn't on sale I get musashi, but it's nowhere near as enjoyable. When I'm really desperate, I get INC, and I need other ingredients to improve the flavour of my protein oats or smoothie so that consuming it isn't a chore.

Botanika, on the other hand, is the best part of my protein oats or smoothies. It makes them a genuine treat. Still, YMMV. This is just my opinion.

I'm with you. Blueberry pancake is fantastic, shame they got rid of the fruity loops flavour. I reckon most of their flavours are fantastic. Chocolate peanut and raspberry coconut are not winners though.

  • Sold out everywhere near me

    • Did you visit in store or use the stock checker? ALDI stock checker is entirely unreliable. I visited ALDI Varsity Lakes ~30 minutes ago and they were out, but that was the first out of 4 ALDIs I've been to.

Some of us don't have a choice. Lactose intolerance really limits you.

  • +1

FYI all, this one is a pea protein + brown rice protein isolate blend

  • PSA: Plant protein has the highest lead contamination (high accumulation of lead from harvested crops), whereas whey protein has the lowest.

    • +2

True, but chocolate flavouring is also a big factor and that's in a lot of whey protein.

Also, rice has the highest concentrates of lead and I don't see people freaking out about rice.

Also, whey contains more fat soluble pollutants, antibiotics, and hormones.

  • I tried the Apple Custard a little while ago, it was the worst tasting protein I've ever had. I only got through 2 shakes before giving, it's still in my cupboard.

I mixed it with water (like I do with all my proteins), maybe milk would taste better but then what's the point of going for a plant protein.

    • Apple Pie or Custard Doughnut?

I don't like any protein with water. I tend to either have them with oats and blueberries, or in a banana smoothie. The latter is great for the morning, because you get those slow burning sugars from the banana to give you energy through the day, while the protein is satiating so that you don't snack.

The latter might be worth trying to use up some protein you don't like the taste of. You'll want to leave the bananas until they're very ripe (but not going bad), then put them in the freezer. Break them up into small chunks first to make it easier on your blender. You'd want a blender marketed as "ice crushing" for this.

      • Apple Pie my bad.

Compared to other proteins with water, this was the worst.

I tend to only use protein powder as supplement and try to limit calories for it so neither option would work for me but I appreciate the effort. I think it's going to end up in the garden for me. I would much rather just eat a banana and have a water shake, I find it a lot more filling and enjoyable.

Sidenote, banana isn't really a "slow burn" sugar, I'm glad it works for you but may be for other reasons. If it's ripe enough banana is go to for athletes as an energy hit (still not nearly as fast as lollies).

maybe milk would taste better but then what's the point of going for a plant protein

      Plant milk exists?

  • Jeez we got the cocoa hazelnut last time, well the wife did and she ended up eating my BSC shred and made me eat this foul stuff as she wouldnt have it even though it was her choice…….couldn't give it to me not that flavour anyway.

    • It seems like each flavour is very "love it or hate".

      • I agree, but the cocoa and hazelnut didn't taste of either ! To try and get rid of it i even made muffins with it and couldn't give them away at the gym……it was too powder tasting.
But to be honest now my wife has decided after that, no more plant protein, which is a bonus!
