  • The mini 3 with RC was about $430 few days ago, damn went up.

  • This or flip?

Always wanted to get one, but we have so many territorial birds in our area.
Magpies, butcher birds, noisy miners, kookaburras and plovers. One of them is bound to attack the drone.

I've been flying drones for 10 years for real estate videography, most birds don't care or fly away. The only attackers I've ever encountered was a wedge tail eagle and crows. Crows swoop but don't make contact. I grounded asap when I saw the eagle lol

      • My mini 3 pro was attacked by magpies and kookaburras, that was while flying low in parkland tho.

So you just do real estate full time?
Are you a professional Photographer also?

Sorry for the questions just curious about the career

        • +1

Very interesting. Perhaps flying low they see you in their airspace. I usually shoot up to 30m for the house then 120m for the area shot.

Yeah I started as a photographer then moved freelance real estate video full time since 2016. I recently moved to a salary job as a videographer (not real estate) but it was fun.

        • Had bird issues. There was a post on reddit to place reflective red tape and they don’t come close.
Tried it. It works. Al my drones now have red reflector tapes on them that can be removed easily

    • The dji care refresh is an insurance policy for their drones. Most rookies are wise to get it anyway. For a small fee they replace drones killed by bad luck.

  • Where can you fly drones in Victoria legally?

    • +5

      Over your neighbour's house.

      Indoors

      Anywhere. Just don’t get caught

    No S&S 😭

Yeah, it sucks that you can't receive one every week.

      • Good for when they decide to fly off into the sunset

    • So NO obstacle avoidance (this is HUGE, trust me) & NO Active tracking so its a hard pass ~ the MINI 3 Pro and up, yeah depending on the SALE

      • I've had a bunch of DJI drones. Ironically, the only one I've lost due to hitting an obstacle was one that had obstacle avoidance.

Since then, I make 100% sure to take a look around and never fly blindly (back/sideways) anywhere I could possibly bump into something. Obstacle avoidance is unreliable imo, or maybe I'm just unlucky.

Other reasons I've lost drones, though sometimes recovered, are: random flyaways, emergency landing due to sudden voltage drop, wind too strong (I knew and yet I put it up), and theft.

I recommend taking a good look at DJI Care and understanding what it covers. At time of writing, the terms + conditions are much better than they used to be and it's often well worth the cost.

I don't have it as my drone is covered under my portable contents insurance, though it won't be under most people's contents while in use.

No active tracking is disappointing, but again, I'd only trust in wide open spaces, and it's not worth the price jump for me.

whoa, i don't want a mini 3 anymore. i need at minimum a mini 3 pro now. 12mp vs the next step up is 48mp. that is 4x better, a huge jump.

        • I didn't get check the table, I just formatted it. It's not accurate, Mini 3 had 48 MP.

That said, megapixels are overrated. More megapixels can least to worse photos in low light or high dynamic range photos.

My Canon only has 24MP and will capture far more detail than a DJI Mini.

  • Is this something a beginner (as in zero flying experience) can purchase to learn with?

Want something to get media while down south with the family.

    • Yes, it's a great starter drone, depending on how/where you're wanting to fly it. What kind of media do you want to shoot?

    • +2

Yep this is the drone you'd want to get if you just want something to put up in the air to get some photos and videos. It has GPS hovering so the moment you take your fingers off the controls, the drone will hover in place. You can RTH (return to home) to let the drone fly back to your take off position.

Fairly simple to learn, however you should watch a few YouTube videos regardless.

Be sure to learn and follow the CASA drone rules.

This model doesn't have obstacle avoidance which is a nice feature to have. Do you need it? Not absolutely but it's an extra safety feature that may save you from crashing into a tree.

Don't take off from a boat unless you know what you're doing. Be sure to fly a few meters above water, any lower and the sensors can think you're landing and may lower into the water. Again, just watch a few YouTube videos and follow the rules and you'll be okay.

Some states have their own specific drone rules, for example Victoria won't let you fly in national parks whereas in Queensland most national parks are okay to fly in (although always double check)

Any other questions let me know

Thanks a lot for this mate.

I pulled the trigger on the mini.

I'll be sure to read up on the laws!

        • Congrats. Quite a fun hobby although I will say that you definitely got to make excuses to fly them otherwise they're a paper weight

        • I finally bought one after 1-2 years waiting :))
