    Is this better than Duolingo?

    • +2

They have a good approach which isn't based on translation. I like it a lot.

      • +1

Can I ask what this approach is?

        • +4

Rosetta stone uses pictures and associated words related to actions (verbs), nouns, etc. to teach you a language. It's how a child learns a language growing up. e.g. for learning German, a picture of an aeroplane next to the German word for aeroplane, I e. flugzeug. There would be a play button that plays the pronunciation of the word.On that slide/page you won't find any English.

Give it a try and see it for yourself. Really interesting.

My only grouch is they don't have Danish.

    • +2

You won't learn a language using duolingo. You might learn some common and useful expressions with this if you use it consistently.

I am getting this error in the last step.
    Error
Your username, password, or namespace is incorrect.

    • +1

put any email address in the username field

      • +1

Did 2nd step again in incognito and it worked.

    • +2

I'm getting this when logging into the app, even though the password was auto-filled from my Google password manager.

  • +1

    Thank you worked no issues

  • +3

Worked for me but an FYI that the password rules between the app and website differ so you can get stuck here.

Mango languages is another platform available through libraries. I have just started Japanese and I am enjoying their approach

    • +1

Thanks for mentioning this, I checked my own library and they offer Mango access! Have signed up

  • Thank you worked no issue

  • I remember having issues last time but this time it worked fine using my account I created last time!

wow an app called rosetta but doesn't teach Egyptian hieroglyphics, ancient greek or ancient egyptian

    • -1

Would be interested in Sinhalese and Thai

    • That'd be like an app called Safari that doesn't take you to South Africa, or an app called Spotify that doesn't spotify anything at all

      • TIL Spotify is a portmanteau of "spot" and "identify".

      • The band Toto reminds me of the same.

There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do. I bless the rains down in Africa

But really it's a false equivalence. Safari is a web browser. If it was a tour company / travel agency, it would be wild to exclude Africa yes.

        • The Japanese toilet brand from Fukuoka reminds me of blessing the rains down in Kyushu

  • Worked for me, thank you.

  • Worked for me no issue, thanks OP

  • Worked for me. Thanks OP

I personally found RS to be better than Duolingo for learning a langauge. I did Latin for about 2-3 months a few years ago (many hours a day) and was able to read many texts and inscriptions. Use to enjoy reading works by comics! I was also able to naturally use the language's grammar, where as a friend was learning Latin at the same time by via textbooks had to break everything down. On comparison, I was able to naturally use the language more, but he had a better understanding of the structure or the 'why' etc.

But the funny thing was I couldn't translate it in to English. I knew what it meant, but couldn't tell you! Laughing at jokes without telling someone in English 'why' was a very interesting experience. I assume this is because you don't learn via translation with RS…

    • +1

As someone with a love of ancient languages, I find it somehow hilarious that you would learn Latin 'naturally'! there's nothing quite like a private chuckle with long-dead authors, but it's a pity we can't banter back and forth

Worked for me. I think there was a similar deal to this before and my subscription was cancelled, so won't be surprised if it happens again.

    Great deal, thank you!

I have been using Transparent through a local library for a while and it’s good, but the app design is a bit funny. I’ve heard good things about Rosetta Stone so I will give that a go. Thanks OP

Nice, thanks for sharing! One weird thing that caused me issues was the password creation. You have to use at least 1 digit when creating the password on the website vs when you do it on the phone, so make sure when you are initially creating the password on the phone, you enter a digit.

  • Worked.

    Love ya OP!

  • Cannot find where to enter months code! Any ideas

  • Entering code failed at first attempt, then worked on second attempt. Thanks OP

  • Thought this was a Tool freebie for a second there and got excited.

I'm struggling a bit here - I want to do Latin (which I have selected in step 3). When I do step 5 it takes me to a page with "Choose a language" but there's nothing to select or tick and I can't proceed further. Any tips?

    • +1

Have the same problem when choosing Latin (yes, I want to learn it!). Somehow when I change the language, it works!

      My step:
      1. using laptop, I open incognito page and paste the address of the "deal link" - point 3 in the description - and enter the email address and password I previously used to create account and select other language (I tried Dutch and Hebrew). It let me sign in.
      2. I logged out.
      3. Using my tablet, I sign in using Work and Account, entered my user name (email address) and password, it works.

Then I did this for testing only:
      4. I logged out from my tablet
      5. Login using the same url address in point 1, select again Latin. It let me log in (note: in laptop).
      6. Log out from laptop
      7. Login in my tablet - doesn't work

      However,
You can learn Latin if you are accessing it using laptop.

      Hope this help!

Great thanks! - using Latin on the PC. Shame it isn't working on the app but that's ok

        Appreciate the post!!

    • Latin doesn't seem to be offered on the App.

  • Worked for me, thanks

  • Where is the workplace box to put code in?

    Cannot see it

    Thanks

    • +1

When you go to login on the app, select work & school account, then under username & password is the box to enter the code

  • Thanks OP, now to refresh my Dutch!

  • Is this app only oriented for English speakers wanting to foreign languages? I am looking for a Duolingo replacement that also suits non-English speakers.

With free unlimited AI chatbots nowadays like chatgpt, gemini, etc. Shouldn't language apps like these be obsolete now?

    • +1
      • -1

I tried setting one up using ChatGPT. Problem is that learning a language is more than just "chatting" or exercises. There needs to be a very carefully considered path to lead the learner through the various stages, introducing new concepts, explaining grammar, rules, typical use etc etc. The amount of work (AI prompts) to get this right is significant and probably beyond the capabilities of the average AI user.

        • And these apps are doing it better? I feel like through interactions and being able to ask questions though chatbots is more effective than just being pushed materials to learn.

          • @mrvaluepack: So what you're saying is rosetta stone should incorporate a chatbot into their suite?

            • -1

@tenpercent: having a "teacher" (in this case chatbot) to talk to and bounce ideas and questions and to choose exactly what you want to learn and focus on is better than a pre-packaged lesson or gamified app.

  • Got it working with your helpful instructions and the comments, thanks OP!

  • Thanks - worked a treat
Long time duolingo user - keen to give this a go

  • Thanks. Worked.
Is it possible to do more than one language at a time? Or do I have to click the link each time I want to switch?

  • Worked thanks for instructions

      might go Latin

    • Filipino was on Duolingo but was removed.

Worked for me with fewer steps
    1. Create an account on the website using the deal link(au.rosettastone.com) and choose a language to learn
    2. Install the app
    3. Log in to the app, select the Work and School account type and enter code "s8432586" in the Workspace box

  • Sweet! Been wanting to try Rosetta Stone for a while.

  • is this free for lifetime? or limited time only?

  • All I'm getting is "Authentication failed. Please re-enter your sign-in information."

  • I'm getting an authentication failed? Could a previous rosetta stone login from a while ago be causing the problem?

    • I have a feeling someone's patched our access
