[Unobtainable] ASUS ROG Ally Z1 Extreme 512GB PC Handheld (Direct Import) $681.30 ($666.16 eBay Plus) @ Dick Smith / Kogan eBay

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Reason: Error with eBay listing, deal was posted with the incorrect model. Several buyers reported receiving ROG ALLY Z1 console with lower end specifications (as opposed to AMD Ryzen Extreme Z1 chipset)

best price I have seen for a Asus Rog Ally Z1 Extreme, Better then used prices currently. Would recommend over a Z2 go.

Mod Edit: Direct Import. Also available at Kogan eBay.

Stick Bazzite (Linux Distro) on this and suddenly you have a Steamdeck Pro.
Way better user experience and better performance.

    • I tried and failed with a dual boot with separate shared storage for games.

      • +1

I did full changeover. Works great.
When did you try last? Bazzite is pretty stable these days.

        • Last year. The problem I encountered was automounting the partition.

Just bazzite was good though. Windows with lossless scaling is decent.

          • +2

@Caped Baldy: ah ok. Maybe give it another go. I've yet to fault it. Windows was ok for a while, but I found it degraded pretty quickly over time. However I will note that Bazzite out of the box is faster than Windows ever was.

      • +1

Yeah these things can be rough for dual booting, Bazzite just can't seem to get the partitioning right. I ended up just blowing away Windows and went full Bazzite, has been great ever since, only missing Armory Crate for some updates.

        • It's steam only right? No other launchers?

    • or jsut get a steamdeck and not have to do anything it jsut works.

      • +1

        It just works regardless bro.

        • I am talking about with steam OS out of the box with out doing anything.

    • Would the official steamos work on this? Thanks

      • +3

Valve is saying that the ROG Ally has beta SteamOS support. I don't know anything about the user experience, but it probably works well enough to have it officially listed.

        https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/65B4-2AA3-5F37-42…

      • +1

It's not officially supported but it works fine based on testimonials.

      • +1

I used it and it worked with zero issues.

      • +1

I have the official SteamOS on my ROG Ally - as others have said, it's technically in 'beta' but I love it.

I've tried Windows Full Screen Experience, Bazzite and CachyOS but I've had the least issues with SteamOS. Obvously YMMV but if you enjoy tinkering with the OS and settings like I do then you'll have a blast experimenting and finding what works for you.

You can dual boot Windows/Linux too and have the best of both worlds which I did for a bit while when I had Gamepass. Have fun!

        • Do you think I’d get a better gaming experience with this than my current setup?
I use an old 2021 g14 asus zephyrus with 1050ti playing on an Oled tv.

I’d learn how to duel boot windows/linux as you do.

          • @Yeahnahmateshesright: You know steam link over android is pretty decent. I would recommend that (your phone etc) with a controller like gamesir g8 galileo cheaper and you have yourself a pretty decent set-up.

    • -3

well you cant even buy a steam deck any more

      • +10

Looks like it's still available in Australia (for now…)

      • +6

True. This is an easy way to get a mid-tier gaming PC and dodge all the supply shortages.

      • +4

Talkin' out yer arse, they are in stock from steam, bought one last week.

      • Why? Is this due to a v2, temporary supply chain issues, or they just won't make them anymore?

        • +2

RAM and Memory 'shortage' due to AI.

Note: Steam Deck OLED may be out-of-stock intermittently in some regions due to memory and storage shortages.

Same thing avail for $599 at JW computers? Am I missing something? https://www.jw.com.au/product/manufacturer-refurbished-asus-…

    • +1

Not bad. I see that is refurbished, so I wonder whether the battery has seen some wear. However, I'd be running it plugged in (for playing games in bed, on couch) to access the 30W power mode.

I was looking at Steam Deck OLED for approx $600, but as I want to play AAA games, this looks like a better bet.

      • Can you run AAA on a hand-held?

        • +3

Yep. The Z1 Extreme is actually a pretty amazing APU. Dont expect high settings but you can assume medium on most of the latest games, barring a few exceptions due to optimisation and such. If you want to know for sure and also want to use Bazzite, check ProtonDB and if you are looking at Gold or higher then you can assume this will do a fair amount better than that.

    • +1

Thanks! I was just in time to place an order at $599!

      • +1

I'm glad! I can't believe they put the price up!

        • +2

Ha… Glad they put the price up otherwise I probably would have bought one 😂

        • We have a mole in this post hahahahha

    • $649 now

  • +7

"Better then used prices currently" dunno where you're located, but I've seen used units between $350 - $600 on the regular on marketplace here in Brisbane…

    • Yeah you're not wrong

      • +1

I cannot find any Z1E models even close to that in Sydney. I just searched and the cheapest is $600. There are standard Z1 listings for as low as $500.

Would love to see a $350 Z1E in Syd, I would buy it today.

  • +6

only issue with these is the junk battery, worth doing an upgrade.

  • +5

Was hoping these would be under $500 by now. But with z1e still performing better than z2 (non e) version, theres still demand left in these

    • +2

RAM prices and shortages are definitely slowing the price decline.
But if you check out ebay from time to time and send out offers, you can sometimes snag a good deal.

I got a legion go z1e for like $550 used on ebay not too long ago.

    • +2

I think they are the same processor but the z2 is more efficient.
You might be thinking of rge z2 go. Which is weaker.
If you have the option for either the z2 or z2e they would both be better picks than the z1e.. unfortunately they are just pricier.

      • -2

        Lmao no.

        Z1e is 8core/16t
        Z2 is 4core/16t

Z1e is cheaper and faster. Z2E is an obvious pick but I'd pick z1e over z2

  • +3

I had the z1 extreme for 1 month, 2 years ago. I sold it and got and kept the steam deck.
Yes on paper the ROG ally and all those windows handhelds looks far superior but the steamdeck is the way more rounded product. Constantly getting updates, huge modding scene and the price is lower too if you can get a 64GB unit on marketplace.

    • +2

Having had a couple windows handhelds but sticking to the steam deck, I agree. I found myself using the steam deck a lot more than the windows ones. ESPECIALLY once I got the OLED SD

Hey guys, just a quick PSA.

I ordered what was listed as a Z1 Extreme last week and it arrived on Monday. When I tried playing Arc Raiders, I noticed the FPS was way lower than what I’d seen in videos.

After checking Device Manager and Armoury Crate, it turns out they actually sent me the standard Z1, not the Extreme.

If you bought from Dick Smith on eBay, definitely double check your device. Looks like they’ve now updated the listing to the regular Z1, but I’ve got screenshots, the invoice, and this thread showing it was originally advertised as the Z1 Extreme.

Just a heads up so no one else gets caught out.

    • Any updates? I ordered the same last week while overseas. I haven't seen my device yet. Will definitely be checking this once I get back this weekend

      • +1

I’ve put through a return and messaged them saying the listing was for a Z1 Extreme but what I got is just the regular Z1.

Haven’t heard back yet, but I’ve got the invoice, email confirmations and the original listing all showing Z1 Extreme. The seller has updated the listing now, but you can still see what was originally purchased.

So worst case if eBay has to step in, I feel like it’s a pretty clear “item not as described”.

        Will keep you posted.

        • Cheers. I will report back tomorrow once I am back in Au.

          • +1

            @Godgodgod: FYI they replied;

Thank you for providing the photos. After further review, we can confirm that the previous product description was incorrect. However, the price paid was for the ASUS ROG Ally Ryzen Z1 Handheld Gaming Console (512GB). The listing has since been updated to reflect the correct product details.

We understand how disappointing this situation must be, and we want to make things right. As a gesture of apology for the error and inconvenience, we can offer you a $50.00 partial refund should you wish to keep the unit. Alternatively, if you prefer, we can arrange a return at our cost and issue a full refund.

Needless to say I am returning it…

            • +2

@Cantstandya: Thanks mate just finished checking my device. Extremely disappointed with the refurbishment process, stains, loose thumbstick, crappy screen. And finally Z1 processor not Z1 extreme.

            • @Cantstandya: Thanks good to know. No one is going to pay $660 for non extreme refurbished when you get a new z2 non extreme machines for around $ 100 more

              • @Godgodgod: The xbox ally is a z2a not a z2.
The z2 is in legion go 2 which is around 1800. Or $1400 on sale

  • +2

Everyone who bought this. Please check if you received Z1 and return the device. Z1 is far inferior to Z1 extreme. @Cantstandya and I received Z1 not Z1 extreme. Not a good price. And bad move by dicksmith/kogan

  • +1

While not having as powerful a chip, the legion go S Z2go not a bad shout at a similar price if you plan to play mainly indies. 1200p 8 inch screen, bigger battery and decent ergonomics. Pops up sometimes on Lenovo outlet for ~$650

  • +1

Still waiting for a reply. To be fair the unit looked brand new other than being the non extreme version. I got a trial for Geforce Now and played a few games only Legion Y700 tablet and it worked far better for $25 a month…

    • Hey mate, did you hear from them? I have started the return through eBay but seller still hasn't provided return shipping details. This is frustrating as Amazon has been so good. I feel like wasted money in eBay plus subscription.

      • Yep, they sent through the return postage label and return authorisation label yesterday. Dropped it off at the post office this morning so should hopefully have the refund in a few days.

  • Does the microSD card slot work on these?

    • +9

      Schrodinger's Slot.

      Both are true.

    • +1

Don't try. They weren't fixed for this model.

Sadly, ssd have gone up in price heaps.

    • Yea, just remember to put a heat sink on the slot

  • I've heard problems are arising from the lack of driver updates on a few game reviews. Certain games are performing better on steam deck despite the steam deck having less processing/graphics power.

I am definitely not up to speed on computers, however lack of support is something to consider.

    • +3

that has been the case since day dot :) which is why steam decks are so popular, it's a combo of the OS being very light on the steam deck vs Windows and also how the APU's are tuned at specific power bands, the steam deck will typically outperfom this at the 15w and below power usage which is what you would do on battery and for a lot of indie type games that will run below this power rating.

  • Solid unit and great price, if refurbished through ASUS.

  • While I love my Ally Z1E, I would have thought the prices would come down more for a refurbished one.

The main advantage is modding if you're not concerned about the warranty.

With SteamOS and a replacement 80Wh battery with fast charging, it becomes a great machine.

The only downside is connecting an eGPU to the system that doesn't require an open case or an expensive XG Mobile eGPU, where the Ally X shines better with its USB 4 connector. Alternatively, I just stream Steam from my PC and consider it a good portable device with long battery life.
