    Aud/yen at a 35 year high

    • +11

For some people that is a plus, as they can explore during the layover

      • +2

Exactly! I love flying China Southern to Japan for this purpose. Always a free hotel for 6hr+ layovers, enough time to explore layover city, and free shuttle to/from the airport.

    • +2

(profanity) are always ready to neg.

    • +7

Not neg worthy. Insanely cheap flight and I view the 21 hours as a bonus, giving you plenty of time to get out of the airport and explore (no visa required). I’d prefer this over a 5-7 hour layover for sure.

    • +12

I recently travelled with them and they give free hotel and meals. Excellent facilities, though you may need to purchase some extra food. Restaurant across the street will give you the best tasting home made noodles ever for about $10.
You can avail free city tour that departs from airport at 8am, returning 2pm. I opted to go straight to hotel as I was tired and caught up with some sleep. Later in afternoon I came back to the airport (free shuttle) took the train just for a bit of sight seeing. Didn't go all the way to the city as it is about 1 hour one way. Very nice train though.
Overall, there is a lot you can do in 21 hours. I did all of the above in my 12 hour stay.

Just make sure you have the means of paying. We did one of these in Xiamen and no-one took card, and we weren't able to access their payment apps as they only accept Chinese numbers and/or bank accounts for signup.

We were completely out of luck and had to go to bed hungry.

        • +3

You can use Alipay and WeChat, link to your credit card for payment.

          • @Richardc: They can, we can't - you need a Chinese phone number to set it up if you're already there.

And then to actually pay, apparently you have to be verified and this kind of requires you to get that status off someone else by them sending you a token amount of money or something?

When I researched it was all very complicated but if I had time and was there properly I probably could have sorted it out, but for a layover it wasn't worth it.

            • +1

@ArtOfTheDeal: You don't need a Chinese phone number to setup, instead you need a international credit card and passport. I use mine for more than a year now. Also you can get Union pay debit from Bank of China (Australia) Limited.

              • @Richardc: Yeah this is something you'd actively need to know beforehand though, rather than being stuck at KFC at 9pm thinking at least that would take card but even that doesn't.

                • @ArtOfTheDeal: You better have some cash, business must accept cash in China.

      • I'd like to try them for a cheap(ish) visit to China. Layover's don't worry me.

I'm with you on this one.

It's what a 9 hour flight to Tokyo from Melbourne?

Literally tripling your time to get to destination - I'm stunned people put such little value on their time.

      • +3

Lol buddy people aren't booking these as business flights, it's a holiday/escape, relax.

      • +3

Because maybe some of us haven't been to China before and would enjoy the day of exploration there as part of the holiday.

    • +12

No worries you can fly direct with qantas for 1800 return plus 2 hours delay each way

We (The downvoters on your comment) will enjoy $486 return, plus free hotel and a day to explore china, saving the money for japan shit

    • +2

This price is a bargain, 2x23kg luggage

    • Personally I like the long layover, can check out another country for a day before I arrive in Japan

  • Awesome value.

    • Prices have gone up, all links Brisbane - Tokyo minimum $750

      • Bris Tokyo flights have been up ever since Virgin axed their Cairns Toyko route, reducing competition.

        • Im talking about this deal and their posted pricing.

  • I'm planning to go to Japan this year so this looks like a great deal. I saw this deal earlier this year / late last year. I thought they had a disclaimer that flights could be cancelled at anytime without notice and that they actually did cancel some if I remember correctly? Think it was due to rising tensions between China and Japan. Was wondering if that was still a concern now?

Not trying to fear monger or turn this into a political chat, was just curious.

Well the Japanese PM may be visit Yasukuni Shrine and has stated that they would defend Taiwan. The nationalists in China, Korea and Japan will always find things to disagree on. It's easy to manufacture problems to hide internal problems and rally the people.

    • i would prefer ANA since i don't want my trip is wasted and more hassle and streesssss….

  • +1

16 to 20 hours layover from syd.
For extra $144 cuts down to 2hrs

  • What are they like as an airline (delays/comfort/food), say compared to Virgin or Qantas

Then again, just checked Bris to Tokyo 13hrs $825, China Southern 1day 1hr $814, yeah nah

  • -7

It's bait. They are gonna cancel the flights to Japan last minute.

  • Is there a way to extend the layover in Guangzhou to say 3 days?

    • +1

yes. just do multi-city and play around w/dates. I usually use booking.com to do it

  • +1

This is only a bargain if you want that layover in China.

  • +4

I recently flew China Southern. I would fly them again. Keep in mind they are strict on the 2 x 23kg. You can go to 23.4kg because they round weight down, but above that attracts an extra charge, so bring two bags to maximise what you can bring. There is no online check-in from Australia, which was odd, and I received zero communication from them before my flight. But the flight itself was very professional and efficient - the plane was new, clean, and the food was better than I expected. Not a great selection on the in flight entertainment but that's to be expected. Guangzhou airport is great. They have two lounges and I used both, which are similar quality and help pass the time.

Flying with them again soon (but not to Japan)!

Literally in Japan now flew on China Southern.

    Good:
    - free transit accommodation and transfer in Guangzhou
    - if you find the right combo you can have a day to visit
Guangzhou to explore (maybe you can do more than a day not sure)
    - new A350 planes for the Aus-China leg (ours was 4.5 years old)
    - food is better than Qantas (flew with QF in May)
    - no need to re-check luggage
    - boarding pass for both legs issued at once
    - some Oz cities have multiple flights a day so you can choose which flight you want (e.g. Prefer night flight for child to sleep through)
    - Guangzhou T2 has a restaurant OUTSIDE security but in the airport with some of the best (if not the best) yum char of your life
    - 2 X 23Kg luggage each
    - flying out of Guangzhou you can pay extra and get upgraded meals (like BBQ pork rice)

    Not good
    - takes much longer
    - we booked very late and almost couldn't seat family together
    - no lounge

    Would I recommend? Yes
Would I prefer to fly direct? Yes depending on price. But even Jetstar at cheapest gets to $750ish with luggage, seats, and crappy food. If ANA/JAL/QF did $750 would snap that up

May to September are the worst time to go to any east Asia countries with extreme high humidity and heat.

  • +2

June is the rainy season. Hot, humid and lots of drizzled days if you're unlucky. Doable, but best avoided.

  • +2

Keep in mind many flights via mainland china to Japan have been cancelled over the last few months. So take the risk of booking and having your flight cancelled for whatever reason. Seems main reason is the shunning of tourism from Mainland china to Japan in last 4 months. Many reports of up to 50% of lights being cancelled each month.

  • anyone plan to this april to japan? or any advice ? i plan go japan either 20april - 2may / around 10oct till 25oct since that is my term break .
would like some information about hotel cost, transport and tourist spot like kyoto/ disney / usj

    • Be aware that late April to early May is golden week so will be very busy as it's holiday period in Japan. Flights are also going to be expensive now being so close to travel. I'd suggest later in the year as October is a nice time to year to travel weather wise.

      • i check october is 2500$ perperson / this april 1600$ perperson. because i have specific date. but yeah, this april for sure cheaper i check with ANA. very limited option from perth to japan.

  • It says April to September but dates after the listed ones are like double the price?
Wanted to go late June/Early July
