[Android, iOS] Cryptomator: Lifetime Licence $15 (Was $39.99) @ Cryptomator & Apple App Store

70

A lot of people recommend this app for encryption when I looked it up online. So I got it for Windows found it worked well. Then got the app from F-Droid, but it asked for money. I'm not opposed to buying a one-off license for apps, but I noticed this was on sale to celebrate 10 years and nobody has mentioned it here yet, so I figured I'd make a post.

The app itself is pretty easy to use. Install the app, make a vault, set a password (biometrics too), then access the vault through the network location on Windows, or within the app on Android. Add files, lock the app, and the files end up looking like gibberish when you go directly to them. You can put the vault on a cloud too, just get the app for the cloud and put the vault there. This lets you manage the E2EE, not the cloud. If you get hacked, then they can't steal anything that you encrypted. It's also a good method to deal with clouds getting told to make back doors in their E2EE. You don't need to rely on the company to support E2EE encryption, you can do it yourself. As for back doors for chat apps, that's another topic.

I don't have an iPhone but I'm pretty sure it's also $15 for it too, but you need to download the app to see the price.

They offer more stuff but I'm mostly interested in the 62% discount for a lifetime subscription to a popular FOSS app. I'm pretty sure you can just build the app for free since the code is open source, but $15 for life, supporting the devs, and not having to do the work to build it myself seems reasonable to me.

OneDrive already has a vault, built in.

To which they have the keys.

    • True, but if the UK ordered Apple to build a backdoor into iCloud, then I'm not holding my breath with OneDrive.

They limit the number of files you can store for free

$15 for an Rsync GUI is a bit steep especially given the middling reviews; lots of issues with the vault prematurely closing and breaking sync etc.

Github releases here to try first, before forking out cash.

    • I've tried all 3 apk types and they all require payment. There is no freemium version yet. If you're on the fence about it and there're issues that will effect you and don't wanna spend $15 to try it, then just try it on the computer first. But if you want to manage your own encryption without having to learn Rsync then apparently it's a good app. I only just started using it but I can report back after a few days before it expires if anyone wants. I'm using android 15 though.

I recommend it. Works very well in 2026. Yes, there have been some issues here and there in the past as the app has had to be rebuilt due to client platform changes, but I can't find a better cross-platform alternative.

  • So now begs the question, do you buy it via their website link (non google play license) or via google play store

With the clamping down of google play store apps later this year, what is the most wise option?

    • Hmm. Good point. I think the apps that are being threatened the most by this apk sideloading stuff would basically be modded apps (revanced apps, etc) or front-end apps (newpipe, etc). I'm guessing that other apps like this one which are already on the play store anyway shouldn't have any issues getting permission from google to get their app signed. They may not want to get the signature anyway, but if there's no choice then I think they'll be okay to get the app signed.

If you go through the website then you get emailed a code which can be used for multiple devices. I tried it on my tablet and it worked. I dunno what the process is through google play but you should be able to also install it on multiple devices but at the mercy of google is all!

      • Well, I guess if you want to go the degoogled route, then non google play license direct from them would be the way to go

    • With Motorola officially offering GrapheneOS moving forward, I dont forsee a big issue.

The crossover between people who want this type of encryption, and who would prefer GrapheneOS is likely EXTREMELY high.

      • Yeah I'm happy to see Motorola coming out with new phones that are supported by GrapheneOS, as coming from a Motorola myself, definitely preferring the experience over Samsung.

Thansk! Bought it, been using it for several years, always wanted get the android verion

  • Thanks - got the IOS version and yes it was reduced to $15 for the lifetime licence

  • How can you access this app across different platforms? iOS does not have username and password just opens directly or am I missing something?

    • You don't need an account, it's just software you can download on different platforms. If you buy it you then get a key for that platform. If you do it though google play then I think it'll tie to your google play account, same for iOS. If you do it directly then you get a key for the android platform. As for windows, mac, and linux, I think it's just free to use.

Bought the app purely to support the developer. I've compiled the code myself though as i have an active developer profile.
