How are we supposed to get over there if the plane has no fuel?

      Not everything on SocMed bruh

      • -3

Facts matter. Australia only holds about 20-ish days of jet fuel and that's reducing every day as this war goes on. You can argue if it's 20, 25 or 30 etc but the point stands.

Unless the Strait of Hormuz opens ASAP then this country will run out of fuel of all kinds in roughly 30 days. It's simple maths.

PLUS, if the Strait did open by magic tomorrow it will still take about 30 days for fuel to arrive here. Again maths - 2 weeks to Singapore, 1 week refining and then 1 week shipping to Aus. Oh and then we're competing against all of Asia for said fuel.. Hint - they might pay more and be local!

        • +1

Chinese government also just halted some petroleum exports and Australia gets most of its jet fuel from there, according AFR:

          https://archive.is/fBSEh

This will raise flight costs notably if shortages happen.

Edit: 32% of our jet fuel. But we will still be hit with increased costs from all carriers not just QF. Expect panic flight buying soon which will further push up costs as people rush to lock in winter / later year flights 🥴

        • +1

So fuel takes 30 days to make it here but if a war starts the fuel stops now?

You know we're still having fuel delivered…

No doubt there's disruptions and the longer the war goes on the longer and bigger the effect of the disruptions will be.

I just like to point out the arm chair fuel experts who started their career on Feb 27..

          • +1

@Some Random Guy: The war is already two weeks old.

          • -1

@Some Random Guy: It's simple. There have been NO ship movements from the Middle East for about 2 weeks so hence NO fuel produced for the Australian market which given we get most of our fuel from that region is a big issue.

It takes about 30 days to get here from the source so yes, some is still en route but that's it. Once that's all used we have no more incoming.

            • @freddofrog42: Chinese vessels can go through and the news say we have no supply issue not sure if including plane fuel. The issue is panic demand. Possibly gov just wants us to calm down by saying that.

              • @bcYield: Check out the marine traffic website - only one or two ships per day are passing per day. It's normally about 130/140 per day.

Look at facts, not News Media.

There are currently ZERO ships trying to go through the Strait of Hormuz as of the time I post this.

                Facts matter not talking heads.

                • @freddofrog42: Based on this article, the halt by China has just started. It should take some times to get effective. At this stage, Qantas will consider to increase the fair. Global oil reserve has been approved just in case. These Chinese planes can refill in China. The real issue will be in the next few weeks if war has not ended. Trump tries to end the war before that otherwise they will have to make a deal. They should have thought of all possible outcomes before starting the war.
                  https://share.google/SFsUHk3XXMHBm1kdL

                  • @bcYield: Agreed. I could have drilled down further.

Some International flights will be okay - they can potentially refuel en-route where possible but there might not be much available here so Qantas et al will prioritise the profitable routes. Global carriers like Emirates might have to route via Singapore etc as an A380 fully fueled can get from there and back to Aus without needing fuel in Aus. Plus once a day they fly to NZ where there should be plenty of fuel. It will depend on the plane as to it's range etc.

Domestic is a worry though so I would expect a lot of local flights to be cancelled.

At the end of the day we've lost approximately 2 weeks of in coming fuel so unless something drastically changes we're in deep doo doo. To those who doubt me, just do the maths..!

As for "Trump" - words escape me. Most hated person in the World?

                    • @freddofrog42: Middle Eastern countries, India and China can fly over Russia that saves them vast amount of fuel and time. This is the quickest route from Australia to Europe.

        • Labor has determined there is no fuel issue and only "far-right extremist scaremongers" are concerned about fuel supply.

          https://x.com/i/status/2029058333597155696

Yes, you heard is correctly. Protecting fuel supply is now a far-right extremism problem.

          • @howcan: Interestingly, these "far-right extremist scaremongers" started this war and now claiming Iran was only 5 seconds away from building a bomb and hitting California.

    • Iran is exporting to China.

    • BYD planes

    • Thats because the government didnt secure any fuel from overseas and now have to rely on the dirty fuel we can manufacture. We cant even manufactor the good quantity fuel.

I spent the start of the week trying to book China Southern flights (Sydney → Beijing) advertised around $400 with stopovers in Shenzhen or Guangzhou.

Every time I tried to check out through Mytrip, Flightnetwork, Gotogate, or Booking.com, payments failed or the price jumped to $1000+. Twice the money was deducted but the booking failed and had to be refunded.

I ended up booking Scoot for about $500 in October (no checked luggage needed).

I noticed other agencies advertising these deals — YMMV.

    • Google flights then click through to carrier if possible, avoided aggregators if you can.

      • Aggregators are always significantly cheaper with Chinese airlines.

    • +5

Trip (chinese company) has always worked for me with Chinese airlines

    • +3

I saw those cheap prices earlier this week to Beijing & also found that they were unbookable. I went through the entire booking process and once you get to the screen to enter payment details (but before entering in CC details) it said that the flight was no longer avaible. For the deal posted today, I went to the final booking page without any errors, and then I entered in Mastercard Test CC details. The card was checked (it takes about 30 seconds) and then I got the message that the card is not valid, so I am assuming there was an attempt to bill the card, which would only be done if the flight was available. Also, for these deals I noticed that Expedia is one of the suppliers, and they are usually quite good at only returning bookable flights.

    • Might be a you issue. I just booked a flight to a Northern Chinese city with CSAir for $500 in June through Gotogate.

    • i had a failure due to my browser - was using chrome (payment would hang and result in an error) . thought it was my credit card , so tried multiple cards.

changed to Edge and it worked fine.

    • I had the same issue, booked failed at the end after pay.

  • And yet Darwin returns on CSAir are still over $1000.

Boggles my mind that J ticket is $5k, almost 10 times more.

Booking out 4 seats for a single person is only $2.3k.

    • +1

But the lounge access and extra Arnott's bikkie for flying J!

      • I generally avoid it if it is Oneworld unless the airline offers access to the house.

Normally eat outside and if it's an overnight, will go to qf lounge for shower, thats about it.

Cambodia is quite good. Went there last month. Bit annoying as there's no border crossings into Thailand.

  • Are there sales for direct flights rather than return? Hoping to visit another country rather than coming back to Australia.

    • Just saw the multi city option!

      • Where's the multi city option?

Not only safely, but thoroughly recommended!
      It's amazing

    • It's not the best place for a holiday but the country has world class sights. Food's good, people are a bit different but that's the point of travelling. China's a world unto itself.

    What is in Guangzhou?

    • City of 20 million. Across from HK and Macau. Right next to Shenzhen. As an Australian, you have free access to all 4 cities. Arguably one of the most populous urban regions in the world if you add them all together. What isn't there to see?

  • Do we need visa for China?

    • No, it's 30 days visa free for us.

  • Any direct flights for sale to shanghai?
