CamelCamelCamel.Any red flags on those sweeteners?
When ever I google it I get vague answers like it "might" cause certain issues.
Yes, erythritol and sucralose are not great, and the steviol, which is the only good one , will be in miniscule quantities
Yep, stay clear.
There's a lot of data that points to negative health impacts even in low to moderate doses of sucralose, esp impacting the microbiome (which has a flow on effect for things like immunity, inflammation, mood, etc.)
Clinical Nutrition ESPEN 2025: Just 30 days of sucralose at safe limits decreased insulin sensitivity by 20%, harmed gut bacteria, and increased pro-inflammatory markers.
Microorganisms 2022: Consuming low-dose sucralose daily for ten weeks caused gut dysbiosis, spiked blood glucose, and raised serum insulin.
Frontiers in Physiology 2017: Mice drinking acceptable daily limits suffered disrupted gut microbiomes and bacterial toxins, significantly raising liver inflammation risk.
People taking protein are most commonly doing it for health reasons, so it seems crazy to want to consume this stuff on the regular.
Thanks for the detailed response, much appreciated
Spot on, and most protein powders use this as the main sweetener since it's the cheapest for them to buy at scale.
I know it's not a solution for everyone but you can purchase a kg of casein and whey protein and go wild on making your own high protein desserts using a more gut friendly sweetener like Stevia, monk fruit or allulose.
For flavouring I add pure cinnamon powder or valrhona Dutch cocoa powder ( the tub is expensive but it’s quite cheap per serving since a little goes a long way) I promise you it will taste more chocolatey than any protein snack that you can buy from the shops
@lovrekn: Oh where to buy the unflavoured whey. Could you also share the recipe for the high protein deserts? Thanks
@ATTS: Coles sells their own unflavoured version of whey protein concentrate, and I just bought some casein from Amazon
Some easy ratios to get you started: 50g of low fat Greek yoghurt + 10g casein + 10g sweetener (more or less to taste). + zest of one lemon. Put it in a glass and whisk for 30 seconds with an electric whisker for a creamy lemon pudding
For chocolate flavoured desserts I try to not use yoghurt since it is too acidic, so I'll either mix it with low-fat ricotta (Coles & Woolies both sell) or milk. E.g. 75g low fat ricotta + 2tsp of cocoa powder + 5g whey concentrate + 10g sweetener
If you have the time and want to get more creative there's so many YouTubers and TikTokkers that do nothing but this, here’s one that I recommend
possible gut issues but depends on the individual
thanks, bought 4 :)
The 12x musashi at 45g of protein per bar for $41 is far better value.
Careful with protein # because those Musashi high protein bars have a lot of collagen which is for nails and joints, not muscle growth
What you reckon of the crust pizza protein base?
I didn't even know Crust still existed
@visitorsonlyparking: Oh haha was it because they closing down storrs? I dont really follow them but i know they are more expensive
But i remember pizza haven and eagles boys close
Some of the most disgusting bars I have ever had the displeasure of enduring
Solid bricks of playdough flavoured like sweeters and cocoa
These are literally the worst tasting (most artificial tasting) and texture is like chewing mud. Made the mistake once. And once only.
20g of protein per bar from milk and whey protein isolates.
Sweetened with erythritol, stevia and sucralose
