OZBARGAIN

G’day Ozbargainers young, old, and that middle bracket where you’re waiting for your parents to die so you can inherit.

I’m in Adelaide this week to perform my show Our Hebrew Friend. It’s a show about the history of comedy, Jewish identity, and legacy. The show focuses on the life of my great grandfather, the famous vaudeville comedian Julian Rose. He was one of the biggest acts of his time, and played all around the world to sold out theatres. A century later, I find myself also touring the world, also telling jokes, and also contending with Jewish identity in a fraught era. If you’re a fan of history, ancestry, and comedy, this is the show for you.

A few additional things:

  • The show is not about contemporary politics or anything of that nature. It’s about comedy then versus now, and I welcome all audience members regardless of their identity etc.

  • Sadly some people are a little concerned about attending conspicuously Jewish shows for security reasons. We have security and the venue is very safe and welcoming.

  • It’s opening night tonight! The more the merrier. If you can’t afford a ticket and still want to come, email david@davidrosecomedy.com and I’ll sort you out.

Cheers!
David

  • Kuddos mate, I'm not local, but I watched one of your YouTube clip to get an idea. The part from the BMI till the end was funny.

    • Thank you! Thats an old video, glad it got some chuckles. Safe to say I’ve improved greatly since then.

      • No worries. Ok let's cut to the chase and gossips, did you marry that US chick or what? :)

        • We got married last year! She’s here in Adelaide with me.

  • I just want to say David, that I admire your strength of character for leaning in to your Jewish identity and family history in these highly politicised times.
It should be normal, it should be unremarkable, but sadly recent times are not all that normal.
Hopefully soon such things will be unremarkable once again.

    • Thanks for the kind words. Strange times but I’m sure everything will only get stranger. Grist for the mill, at least.

    • That has nothing to do with my show. No need to mention it.

    • Dumb and boring comment. Why did you bother?

  • Did you always want to be a Comedian, or was it the story of your granddad that inspired you?

    • I genuinely always loved comedy, wanted to be funny, and was obsessed with jokes. It wasn't until after I started performing that I found out about Julian Rose and his career. I do wonder if it's partly genetic.

  • I sympathise with David Rose. Given our hate speech laws, comedy must be replaced with identity signalling.

    • In my experience, people who think "identity politics" are a problem generally want a very specific kind of identity across the board in society. You never see the water you're swimming in.

      • want a very specific kind of identity across the board in society

We can guess which country you're referring to.

        • Boring, predictable and pointless comment.

          • @Weshouldgetsushi: Yeah, it's totally believable that you're interested in comedy.

  • Late to the comments party, but saw David on a cruise last year. Really enjoyed the show - arguably one of the better sets I've seen in recent years (though that's not extensive). Either way, an upvote from me.

    • Can't wait for Melbourne comedy festival. @sodadiver, you should put more extracts of your shows on YT!
