Best eSIM for China Trip

Going to China (Shanghai) for the first time early April. Just wondering what's the best esim approved by ozb?

Only need to able to use whatsapp, google, and Chinese app like wechat and alipay to book taxi and tickets. Would like to get two of course, in case got lost with my partner.

Worth noting have never use esim before, so fairly foreign concept for me. Currently using Pixel 9A. I do wonder any difference between getting local sim and esim?

TIA!

Ive used trip.com and travelkon. Trip.com is cheap. Both worked well. I think main difference might be support if you have issues.

Check what you can get through Alipay, I've got a trip coming up and have been looking at the same. Some of the offers you get are pretty impressive.

I've us3d Simify in other countries and they work well. For China in a few weeks looking at about fiddy for 2 weeks unlimited.

  • what choices have you found so far?

    • Just the one I searched on ozb, like travelkon, bamboosim etc… There are so many! Any notable difference between them?

    The cheapest.

  • With esim, do you have a virtual local number? Can you make call to local landline? Or just data?

Esim and physical sims are same and you use esim as a regular sim. Only difference is that it is downloaded to your phone and not inserted.

When i travel to China, like where i am currently, i just pay $50 for roaming to Amaysim and get 6GB data to use in China for 365 days. That way i dont even need vpn in China as everything works as normal.

BTW, download WeChat and add your credit card to it, makes your life hella easier as cash is frowned upon in here.

      • To get a local number, I think you'll need to get a physical sim and register your details with the telco provider in China.
Esims for Chian are usually data only and not China sims, so a vpn is not required to get to google, whatsapp, facebook, etc.
A local sim would block all of the above.

  • Travel there 3 or 4 times per year. I just pick up an eSIM off Trip.com every time. Never had an issue.

  • I used Nomad a few weeks ago. You will absolutely burn through data, more than you expect. I used about 10gb every 3 days. So buy more than you expect. You can top it up though as long as it hasn't run out yet (as you still need to be able to access their website to buy more).

  • 3HK, a Hong Kong telco company offers esim for mainland China. Cheaper than most Esims out there. Data only and no vpn require to access fb and etc
